❔
Excellent lost live work by Art Blakey – playing here with one of the best-ever versions of the Jazz Messengers! The frontline is held down by Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmons, and Lee Morgan – the firey trio who put Blakey's group on the map as one of the best-ever hardbop ensembles of the 50s and 60s! The quintet is playing here before a very live audience, at the Olympia in Paris, during a time when the Jazz Messengers were having a very fruitful relationship with the city. This 2CD set features some excellent long tracks – including 12 minute versions of Timmons' "So Tired", Morgan's "Yama", and Shorter's "The Summit" – plus a version of "Close Your Eyes", which the group always did well! Other tracks include "Blues March", "Moanin", "Noise In The Attic", "It's Only A Paper Moon", and "Dat Dere".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

Child's Dance (with bonus tracks)
Prestige, 1972. Used
Seminal Art Blakey material from the early 70s – a real change from his 60s vibe on Blue Note, in a style that really opens up to a host of more spiritual touches! The album's a counterpart to the classic Buhania set, also issued on Prestige at the time – and like that record, this one ... CD
Europe 1 (France), Early 60s. Used 2 CDs
The set's a tight affair with great solo work from a larger group of players – which includes Don Ferrara and Conte Candoli on trumpet, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Willie Dennis and Alan Raph on trombone, Bob Donovan and Gene Quill on alto, Jim Reider and Zoot Sims on tenor, Buddy Clark ... CD
Europe 1/RTE, 1965. Used
Outstanding Dizzy Gillespie material – from one of his most overlooked periods! The time is the mid 60s, and after a few years of working with Lalo Schifrin in his group, Dizzy's changed his Latin bag from hard-edged Cubop to mellower more complicated Bossa and modal jazz. The result is ... CD

Frank Strazzeri

After The Rain
Catalyst/P-Vine (Japan), 1976. Used
Funky keyboard work from Frank Strazzeri – a player who's really stretching out here in the 70s, with a massively cosmic vibe you'd never have guessed from his earlier work! Strazzeri had recorded and played heavily around the LA scene by the time of this mid 70s release – but most of ... CD

Howard McGhee

Dusty Blue
Bethlehem (Japan), 1961. Used
One of the best of the early 60s comeback albums by the legendary bop trumpeter Howard McGhee – and a record that really has the player finding a whole new groove in his music! At this point, Maggie's got a fantastic tone that was missing from his earlier records, filled with pain and raw ... CD

Bobby Hutcherson

Montara
Blue Note (Japan), 1975. Used
One of our favorite Bobby Hutcherson albums ever – and a magical session filled with electric Latin vibes! The album's quite a different one for Bobby at the time – as it has him working with some larger arrangements, in a soulful west coast groove that's almost got the feel of a hip ... CD

Manhattan Jazz Quintet

Autumn Leaves
King (Japan), 1985. Used
A standard-setting record from the Manhattan Jazz Quintet – that strong return to acoustic modes that made the combo such a breath of fresh air in the 80s – at a time when so few jazz groups were content to just focus on doing their thing! The head genius here is pianist David Matthews ... CD

David Murray

Spirituals
DIW (Japan), 1990. Used
An album of spiritual tunes and spiritual themes – played by David Murray in a style that's quite similar to his work on the Deep River set! The format's a bit more traditional here, given the album's use of older themes from gospel music – but the core quartet of Dave Burrell, Fred ... CD

Horace Parlan

Up & Down
Blue Note (Japan), 1961. Used
A killer set from an amazing quintet made up of some of the best players to ever grace the Blue Note label! Cannonball Adderley

Nippon Soul (with bonus track)
Riverside/OJC, 1963. Used
A swingin' Japanese concert by one of Cannonball's best groups from the 60's. Joe Zawinul's on piano, brother Nat's on cornet, Sam Jones is on bass, and Louis Hayes is on drums. But the real treat here is Yusef Lateef, who does some excellent reed work on tenor, flute, and oboe – and who's ... CD
