Best Of Argo Jazz

LP (Item 802052) Argo, 1960s — Condition: Near Mint-
Features work by Ahmad Jamal, Benny Golson & Art Farmer Jazztet, Al Grey, Lorez Alexandria, Buddy Rich, James Moody, Roland Kirk, and others!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bossa Nova
Argo, 1962. Sealed
One of the most unique albums from Ramsey Lewis' early years at Chess Records – a spare set of bossa groovers that has the Lewis trio with Eldee Young and Redd Holt augmented by added Brazilian percussion and guitar! The sound is spare, sharp, and soulful – and the record's one of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1958. Very Good+
Magical early work from Ahmad Jamal – a scintillating blend of piano, percussion, and bass – with a sound that was incredibly fresh at the time, and which still sounds pretty much so to our ears! The album crackles with imagination and rhythm – really hitting on all burners ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sam Lazar

Playback
Argo, 1962. Very Good
One of a few rare albums from Hammond player Sam Lazar – a lesser-known artist from the same searing generation as Baby Face Willette and Jack McDuff, but a musician who never full got his due! This record was done for the Argo side of Chess Records, and it's got a raw sound that's equal ... LP, Vinyl record album

Howard McGhee & The Blazers

House Warmin'!
Argo, 1961. Very Good
This is the original Argo issue of a session that was also issued on Winley Records under Gene Ammons name. Ammons recorded the session as a leader, but then couldn't be listed on the record because of contractual reasons. Instead, Howard McGhee's listed as the leader, but Ammons is also on here, ... James Moody

Flute N The Blues
Argo, 1956. Very Good
One of James Moody's first albums for Argo – and an album that features him shifting from tenor sax over to flute – and playing in a slyly seductive way that would have great implications for generations of soul jazz musicians for years to come! The sound here is never sleepy – ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Moody

Hey It's James Moody
Argo, 1959. Very Good
A magnificent little album – one of James Moody's first collaborations with arranger Tom McIntosh – one of the most sensitive jazz voices of his time. Zoot Sims

Zoot (Argo)
Argo, 1956. Good
An obscure session for Zoot Sims – but a nice one! The group's a quartet – with Johnny Williams on piano, Gus Johnson on drums, and Knobby Totah on bass – and Zoot's blowing in an unfettered setting that reminds us a bit of Sonny Stitt in similar settings at the same time! ... Miles Davis

Sketches Of Spain
Columbia, 1960. Very Good+
A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Richard Groove Holmes & Ernie Watts

Come Together
World Pacific, 1970. Very Good+
Two of LA's best soul jazz talents team up in this set of funky tracks with a good LA studio groove to them. Rahsaan Roland Kirk

Kirkatron
Warner, 1977. Very Good+
Later genius from Rahsaan Roland Kirk – a record of wonderful depth and soul, and a session that moves back to the straighter jazz focus of some of his work from the Mercury years – yet still keeps all the personality and charm of the best Atlantic sides! Roland's playing in a warm ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz

Captain Marvel
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+
A wicked album that's one of Stan Getz's best from the 70s! The record features Stan reunited with Chick Corea, whose warm lyricism was the lynchpin in Getz's landmark Sweet Rain – the stunning session from 1968 that is perhaps our favorite-ever Getz album. Corea plays electric piano here, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rahsaan Roland Kirk & The Vibration Society

Rahsaan Rahsaan
Atlantic, 1970. Very Good+
One of the hippest albums that Rahsaan Roland Kirk ever recorded – a perfect realization of his "black classical music" ethos, and a pan-generational jazz album that's all held together by one unique musical vision!
