Nolen & Crossley

LP (Item 74479) Gordy, 1981 — Condition: Near Mint-
Smooth modern soul from the team of Curtis Nolen and Raymond Crossley – one of those "all in one" duos that seemed to be cropping up a lot in soul music at the time! Curtis and Raymond wrote, played, and sang on all of the tunes on the album – in a light and sunny style that's got plenty of west coast Motown touches. There's a few uptempo numbers on the record, but the best tunes are the mellower ones – which percolate nicely at a midtempo pace that's perfect for the twin vocal approach of the pair! Titles include "Messin Up A Good Thing", "Dreamin", "Face On The Photograph", "If You Come Back", "Winterlude", "Lay It On The Line", "My Old Girlfriend", and "Let's Get Freaky Tonight".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gordy, 1962. Near Mint-
One of the coolest, grooviest early group albums on Motown – sung by a group who've got a wonderfully rocking sound throughout – something you can probably guess from the placement of the guitar on the cover! That instrument steps out strongly on most numbers here – giving The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Edwin Starr

25 Miles
Gordy, 1969. Near Mint-
Socking soul, and a key album in the career of Detroit powerhouse Edwin Starr – one that had him stepping forth with a proud, loud groove all the way through! Starr's work was always a bit harder than the regular Motown bag – no doubts because of his more indie soul roots – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Temptations

Cloud Nine
Gordy, 1969. Very Good
A masterpiece in psychedelic soul from The Temptations – perhaps the most perfectly realized album from their years working with Norman Whitfield! The set's awash in that bottom-heavy, rumbling funk mode that Whitfield brought to the group at the end of the 60s – served up in bold ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dennis Edwards

Don't Look Any Further
Gordy, 1984. Very Good+
Dennis Edwards made some great music with The Temptations – but a record like this is key proof that he was maybe even stronger as a solo act on his own! There's a mature 80s vibe to the whole record – one that comes from the commandingly strong, soulful style that Edwards perfected ... LP, Vinyl record album

Temptations

Sky's The Limit
Gordy, 1971. Very Good-
Sublime work from the Temptations – still recording here with Norman Whitfield, who's really opening up his bag on most of the record – and taking the group into expansive territory that was barely hinted at in their early work! Atlantic, 1976. Very Good-
A classic 70s soul soundtrack – and a dream of a combination! Curtis Mayfield wrote the soundtrack and produced the album – and the result is a killer batch of 70s soul tracks that matches Aretha's strong vocals with the hip Curtom sound of Chicago! Aretha was still doing pretty well ... LP, Vinyl record album

OV Wright

Bottom Line
Hi Records, 1978. Sealed
Great work from OV Wright – one of the few singers who was still strongly carrying the Hi Records torch at the end of the 70s! Although Wright had sometimes been bluesier in the past, his late 70s Hi sides have a much mellower, mature sort of feel – a ripening of the seeds in his ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rudy Ray Moore

Eat Out More Often
Kent, Early 70s. Near Mint-
Classic stuff – Rudy's first album, and a fitting launch to his famous career of party records and live club performances! The cover's got Rudy in front of a nude black model, laying back on the couch, and encouraging him to do the thing that's implied by the title – but the record ... LP, Vinyl record album
Kent, Early 70s. Near Mint-
Rudy Ray Moore's second album, and almost hipper than the first – thanks to some key musical backings from The Fillmore St Soul Rebellion! The vibe here is as rough and raw as you'd expect – a no-holds-barred version of party records, with Rudy using plenty of language hardly heard ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marvin Gaye

Midnight Love
Columbia, 1982. Very Good
Marvin Gaye's last album ever – and a sensuous batch of grooves that almost return him to the sound of Let's Get It On! The style here is a bit more modern, but the sound is still great – a smoother approach to soul than most of Gaye's contemporaries at the time, recorded in a way that ... LP, Vinyl record album
