All-Time Great Instrumental Hits

LP (Item 71455) Capitol, Mid 60s — Condition: Near Mint-

A wonderful gem from the great Howard Roberts! This mid 60s Capitol album features the guitarist working with organist Henry Cain – an underdiscovered west coast talent, and a player who's got a nicely stripped-down sound, very much in the vein of Walter Wanderley. Given that Roberts' style is influenced more than a bit by the bossa, the match sounds great – filled with breezy groovers that hold up very nicely over the years! Titles include "Soft Winds", "Mr Lucky", "Work Song", "The In Crowd", and "Desafinado".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Rainbow label pressing. Cover has a small cutout hole.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Howard Roberts

Jaunty-Jolly
Capitol, 1967. Near Mint-
Jaunty is a pretty darn great way to describe the Howard Roberts sound on Capitol Records – upbeat, grooving, and wonderfully well-rounded – bringing in a bit of funk, a bit of bossa, a bit of groovy, and coming up with a whole new sound in the process! Roberts guitar is wonderfully ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley

Mercy, Mercy, Mercy!
Capitol, 1966. Very Good+
If the 60's ever had a "hit" jazz record, it was probably this one! The album's a sparkling live session featuring the trademark soul jazz sounds of the Cannonball Adderley group with Joe Zawinul on acoustic and electric piano, and brother Nat Adderley on cornet. The tracks have a long ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie Mariano

Mariano (1988)
Capitol/Intuition, 1988. Very Good+
An obscure late 80s session from Charlie Mariano – kind of an extension of his spacey fusion of the 70s, but with smoother 80s touches. The set was recorded in Germany, with lots of keyboard work by Mike Herting, who also arranged most of the tracks and produced the album with guitarist Paul ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Kenton

Adventures In Jazz
Capitol, Early 60s. Very Good+
Stan reprises his famous modernist swing in a great little album that's one of his best works from the early 60s. The tracks are longish, with the mixture of dark shading and breakout solos that grace some of his best early work – and although the players in the group aren't the famous west ... Zbigniew Seifert

Passion
Capitol, 1978. Near Mint-
The last album ever recorded by jazz violinist Zbigniew Seifert before his tragic early death from cancer – and a really far-reaching set that's got more of a solid, acoustic feel than his first set for Capitol. Like that album, this one's co-produced by Chris Hinze, and has some of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jack Sheldon

Oooo But It's Good!
Capitol, Early 60s. Near Mint-
Not really a vocal jazz record at all – although we will be honest, and say that Jack does do some singing on the set – but a comedy album, and one that shows yet another career in the wide-ranging career of LA jazzman Jack Sheldon! The record catches Jack live before a "studio ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Kenton

Kenton In Hi-Fi
Capitol, 1956. Near Mint-
Easily the most successful album that Stan Kenton ever recorded – a brilliant reworking of older Kenton band standards, done with the dynamics of the 50s hi fi scene! The album's a much-needed one to any fan of Stan's genius – as the tunes are presented here in recordings that really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley

Soul Zodiac
Capitol, 1972. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of the coolest, baddest, funkiest albums Cannonball Adderley ever recorded – a massive suite of tunes based on the signs of the Zodiac, produced to perfection by David Axelrod, and featuring some hip recitations from the mighty Rick Holmes! The double-length set is completely compelling ... LP, Vinyl record album
