✈

Maybe some of the coolest music ever recorded at Carnegie Hall – a wonderful venue that's perfect for the blend of soul and space of the CTI Records years of Hubert Laws! Laws' lead lines on flute really stretch out beautifully in the setting – given ample room to roam amidst a lineup that features Dave Friedman on vibes, Ron Carter on bass, and Bob James on piano and electric piano – all on tracks that have the same open, breathy quality as Hubert's sublime Afro Classic album. Like that set, there's a subtle dose of funk in the mix, but more focus on an airier mode up top – stretched out beautifully over a medley of Chick Corea's "Windows" and "Fire & Rain" – and on a 20 minute take of "Passacaglia In C Minor".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Hubert Laws

Flute By Laws
Atlantic (Japan), 1966. Used
A great little set of Latin jazz – and one of the strongest albums ever from flute man Hubert Laws! At the time of this recording, Laws was playing with Mongo Santamaria's group – and for this second solo outing, he borrows a lot of grooves from Mongo's bag – and also hits a few ... CD

Hubert Laws

In The Beginning
CTI, 1974. Used
Moody work from one of the most groundbreaking flute players of the 70s – and a real standout in the legendary catalog of CTI Records! Hubert Laws was not only richly talented, but he was also capable of a large number of styles – and this double-length set for CTI has him moving past ... CD

Don Ellis

Tears Of Joy
Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1971. Used 2CD
One of the greatest albums ever from funky trumpeter Don Ellis – partly because he takes off in a whole new direction of tones and sounds! Don blows both a quarter-tone trumpet and four-valve trombone here – both instruments with a very distinctive vibe, which are then set up in a ... CD

Gabor Szabo

Mizrab
CTI/King (Japan), 1972. Used
Wonderful work from guitarist Gabor Szabo – a record that really helped to shift his sound and style into the 70s! The groove here is often open and free – taking off from some of the exoticism of Gabor's 60s albums on Impulse and Skye, but with a bit more of the CTI electric groove ... CD

Stanley Turrentine

Salt Song (plus bonus track)
CTI, 1971. Used
An amazing album from Stanley Turrentine – quite different than most of his other sessions for CTI, but in a really great way! Stan's playing here with arrangements from Deodato – in a swirling, Brazilian jazz influenced mode that's similar to their work together with Astrud Gilberto ... CD

Lenny White

Big City
Nemperor/Wounded Bird, 1977. Used
A great little album by Lenny White – nicely restrained in the best moments, with less of the heavy-hitting fusion sound that you'd hear on his other albums – and even done with a strong current of funk, which really sends the whole thing home in a great way! Space jazz maestro Pat ... CD

Don Ellis

Autumn
Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1968. Used
An album of explosive power and imagination from Don Ellis – a set that shows him very firmly shaking off the more academic mode of earlier years, and heading into hipper, more youth-oriented directions! The group's still a bit band on most numbers – but it's one with a lean, well-craft ... CD

Keith Jarrett

Mourning Of A Star
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1971. Used
Keith Jarrett's really pushing himself here – playing piano with some of the freewheeling qualities that would make him a huge new talent in the 70s, and also picking up some other instruments as well! Although the set's billed to a trio – Jarrett with Charlie Haden on bass and Paul ... CD
Wounded Bird, 1967. Used 2CD
Excellent pre-Columbia work from trumpeter Don Ellis – a live date recorded with Tom Scott on saxes and Dave Mackay on piano – presented here in its entirety for the first time ever! The groove here is every bit as hard as on Ellis' funky classics for Columbia – but more acoustic ... CD

Joe Farrell

Moon Germs
CTI/Sony, 1972. Used
One of the best records ever cut by funky sax man Joe Farrell! The album's got a stripped down, choppy groove – virtually the blueprint for later 70s funk of this type, and played perfectly by Farrell and a very hip quartet lineup! Players include Joe on soprano and tenor sax, Herbie ... CD

Passport

Looking Thru
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1973. Used
A cosmic leap forward for Passport – a record that's even more keyboard-heavy than some of the group's earlier work, and which stretches out in a spacey sound that's very much in keeping with the cover! The keys here are handled by (yet again) another new player in the group – Kristian ... CD

Jeff Lorber Fusion

Wizard Island
Arista/Wounded Bird, 1980. Used
A real classic from Jeff Lorber – the kind of record that crossed-over immediately, and had a huge influence on so many different scenes! The style is smooth sweet fusion – of a sort that Lorber virtually helped invent, and so many others helped to ruin in later years – but here, ... CD
