Complex rhythms from reedman Steve Coleman – as you might guess from the title, or from some of the other excellent work by his Five Elements group! The bass and drums are definitely at the core of the set – handled by Anthony Tidd and Sean Rickman, respectively – but the alto of Coleman and trumpet of Jonathan Finlayson also have plenty of rhythmic qualities – arcing, dipping, and turning together with effortless ease – in a way that takes us back to some of the new rhythmic energy of the New York scene of the 80s.
