An album and a half of work from the team of Cecil Payne and Duke Jordan – all of it great! Patterns Of Jazz is a warmly crafted set that features Cecil Payne at the height of his powers on baritone sax – blowing with a sense of soul and timing that's right up there with some of the hipper tenor players of his generation! Payne's sound on the instrument is amazingly precise and wonderfully fluid – blown beautifully in two different settings for the album – one in a quartet with Duke Jordan on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – the other in the same group, but with Kenny Dorham added in on trumpet! Dorham's tones further emphasize the sweeter sound of Cecil on his chosen instrument – and titles on the set include "Arnetta", "Chessman's Delight", "Bringing Up Father", "Groovin High", "Saucer Eyes", and "Man Of Moods". The remaining tracks on the CD are from East & West Of Jazz – a split LP on the Charlie Parker label featuring one side by Duke Jordan, and one by Sadik Hakim. The "west" side of the album features Jordan leading a quintet with Cecil Payne on baritone sax and Johnny Coles on trumpet – in a mode that's got a similar earthy feel to Payne's own album on the Charlie Parker label.
