We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Surprisingly nice album from Paul Bley, despite a rather overly hippy dippy cover and concept. The tracks are straight trio ones, with Bley on piano, and Gary Peacock doing some great bass work. Titles include "El Cordobes", "Mr. Joy", "Kid Dynamite", and "Rambli ... LP, Vinyl record album

Limelight, 1964. Very Good Gatefold
It's the mid 60s, and although Chet's lost the classic sound of his early recordings, he does a pretty nice job in this small group session that has him playing fluegelhorn in place of a recently-stolen trumpet. The sound is nice and compressed, with a tightly restrained feel that works well with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Limelight, 1965. Very Good+
A surprisingly groovy set of mid 60s tunes by Gerry – recorded in LA with backing by a small group that includes the great Hal Blaine on drums and Pete Jolly on piano, plus a string section conducted by Harry Bluestone. Mulligan's main role is to lay down some moody solos – in a manner ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of Roland Kirk's moodiest albums – and a record that really helped him find a big new audience in the 60s! The approach here is a bit different than some of Kirk's more bombastic jazz albums from previous years – gentle, and almost spiritual at times – thanks to heavy use of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Limelight, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
One of the most obscure mid 60s sides by Blakey – but a great one! Atlantic, 1967. Near Mint-
An oft-overlooked and surprisingly soulful session on Atlantic – a sublime pairing of the talents of trumpeter Jimmy Owens and pianist Kenny Barron! Cadet, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of Ramsey's excellent late 60s funky piano records for Cadet – featuring his second trio with Cleveland Eaton on bass and Morris Jennings on drums, and a sound that's nicely expanded from the mid 60s hit years. A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! Excellent work from pianist Harold Mabern – a strong talent whose lyrical powers graced the MJT sides from Chicago on Vee Jay in the early 60s, and a player who also worked on some great Blue Note sessions in the mid 60s.
