We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Love's Theme/Sweet Moments
20th Century, 1973. Very Good+
Solid gold! "Love's Theme" is Barry White's famous instrumental that became one of the monster sellers of the 70s – and a theme for just about every locally produced sports show! The flip's nice too, and both cuts are prime prime mellow soul! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Love Jones/I'm The Guy
20th Century, 1972. Very Good+
A killer bit of harmony soul – one of the greatest of the genre from the 70s! Brighter Side Of Darkness are barely remembered these days – but "Love Jones" is one of those cuts that will go on forever – a sweetly tripped out number with incredibly baroque production, ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Warner, 1984. Very Good+ (pic cover)
A great release of the song that really put Prince over the top – a song that got him maybe more play on rock and pop stations than he was ever getting on soul radio – and which for years became an anthem for folks who never would have touched his music in years before! Mister Luckee/Ain't That Hateful
Satellite, Late 60s. Very Good+
A fantastic single from Monk Higgins! "Mister Luckee" is a spare slow hard-grooving single – an organ/sax groover with a slow dance beat that's a bit like "Madison Time" (complete with calls), but pushed over the top by some wild instrumental soloing on organ, and by this ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
ABC, Early 70s. Very Good+
One of the all-time blacksploitation vocal themes! "Are You Man Enough" was lifted from the soundtrack to Shaft In Africa – and it's a perfect blend of righteous soul vocals, funky clavinet, wah wah guitar, and even a bit of conga grooving. Totally catchy – and one we've ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
