Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Pepper Adams

Pepper Adams Quintet
Mode/VSOP, 1957. Used
An obscure late 50s gem from Pepper – a stripped-down quartet session that has him blowing in a very open-ended mode – quite a difference from some of his more tightly arranged sets! The feel's a bit like Pepper's work with Donald Byrd, but even more openly swinging – played by a ... CD

Serge Chaloff

Boston 1950
Uptown, 1946/1950. Used
Excellent small group material recorded at the Hi Hat in Boston and the Celebrity Club in nearby Providence, RI. Tracks come from three different dates and feature work by Sonny Truitt on trombone, Nat Pierce on piano, Joe Shulman and George Jones on bass, and Jack McDonald on drums. CD
Uptown, 1953. Used
Beautiful work from baritone saxophonist Serge Chaloff – one of a few key players who helped reinvent the role of his instrument in jazz during the postwar years – but one who only made a handful of records before his too-early death! This live performance really corrects the lack of ... CD

Sonny Clark

Oakland, 1955
Uptown, 1955. Used
Sonny Clark on piano, Jerry Good on bass, and Al Randall on drums. CD
Uptown, Late 40s/Early 50s. Used

Charles Mingus

West Coast, 1945 to 1949
Uptown, Late 40s. Used CD + Book
A great assemblage of rare early material by Charles Mingus – recorded, as the title implies, on the west coast during the late 40s. The range of styles is pretty strong – as some tracks are small group sides, some larger ensembles, some with vocalists, and others more experimental ... CD

Don Sickler

Night Watch
Uptown, 1990. Used
An excellent showcase for the arranging skills of Don Sickler – with Carl Fontana on trombone, Don Sickler on trumpet, Ralph Moore on tenor saxophone, Richard Wyands on piano, Kenny Washington on drums, Peter Washington on bass, and Gary Smulyan on baritone saxophone. CD
Blue Note, 1960. Used
A partner album of sorts to Jimmy Smith's classic Midnight Special album – recorded during the same sessions as that one, and also featuring Stanley Turrentine on tenor and Kenny Burrell on guitar! The sound here is almost even more open and stretched out – with only 4 long tracks on ... CD
Columbia, 1957. Used
A masterful meeting of two 50s modern jazz talents – the trumpet of Miles Davis balanced with the arrangements of Gil Evans – with results that have made the album one of Miles' greatest ever! The sound here is completely sublime – as Davis gets all chromatic and spooky over ... CD

Frank Morgan

Mood Indigo
Antilles, 1989. Used
Features Ronnie Matthews and George Cables on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Al Foster on drums – plus guest trumpet from Wynton Marsalis. CD

Miles Davis

Round About Midnight
Columbia, 1956. Used
Thelonious Monk may have written the title tune, but Miles Davis makes it all his own here – blowing with a subtle moody magic that makes the album one of his true treasures from the early Columbia Records years! John Coltrane's along on tenor sax – helping Davis expand the sound the ... CD

Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane

Thelonious Monk Quartet With John Coltrane At Carnegie Hall
Blue Note, 1957. Used
A rare gem of a session – live material recorded by the Voice Of America in 1957, and featuring a unique Thelonious Monk quartet with John Coltrane on tenor! The performance is contemporaneous with Coltrane's appearance on the legendary Monk's Music album for Riverside – and the ... CD
