❔
Latimore was one of those singers who never stopped being great – and even here, on a small release that never got him the fame of his 70s albums, he still sounds wonderful! His voice is sublime – easily one of the most distinct in southern soul, with an ability to be raspy and nasty one minute, and warm and smooth the next – set up here in backings that showcase the newer modes of soul that Malaco were forging at the time – which seems to work perfect for Latimore. Titles include a smooth stepping version of "Let's Straighten It Out", plus "We Don't Make Love Anymore", "Take Me Down", "I'll Do Anything For You", and "Hell Fire Lovin".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cut corner and light wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Fern Kinney

Groove Me
Malaco, 1979. Near Mint-
A standout classic from Fern Kinney – and a set that not only marked a big moment of evolution for southern soul, but also for the Mississippi scene as well! The set was recorded at the Malaco studios in Jackson, but has a vibe that's much closer to some of the TK Records material from Miami ... LP, Vinyl record album

Betty Wright

Betty Wright Live
Alston/TK, 1978. Very Good+
A fantastic live album from the great Betty Wright – and one of the few recorded documents of the way that classic soul singers would evolve the nature of their songs in a concert setting! Tamla, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold

Prince

Prince
Warner, 1979. Very Good+
An overlooked record in the grand scheme – which is unforgivable in our book! Larry Williams

Dizzy Miss Lizzy
Specialty/Ace (UK), Late 50s. Near Mint-
A key collection of work by Larry Williams – the 50's R&B artist who's too-often written off as a rocker, but who actually went onto have a key influence in the early years of soul! Like Johnny Guitar Watson, another contemporary with whom Larry sometimes recorded, Williams had a style ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Simon

Best Of Joe Simon
Sound Stage 7, Late 60s. Very Good+
A great summation of the best of Joe's early work – which is really some of our favorite! LP, Vinyl record album

Pointer Sisters

Steppin
Blue Thumb, 1975. Very Good+
The title and cover are very appropriate for this one – because there's a wickedly stepping groove to the set – one that makes the album the group's funkiest ever! Forget any thoughts you may have about The Pointer Sisters, or the cliches that later came to mar their career – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Melba Moore

Dancin' With Melba
Buddah, 1979. Very Good+
A album of club tracks, as you might guess from the title, but every bit as strong as Melba More's other work from the late 70s! The album's got some top-shelf club help throughout – including production from Van McCoy and McFadden & Whitehead, the latter of whom also contributed a few ... LP, Vinyl record album

Maxayn
Capricorn, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
The debut album from Maxayn – a funky female talent who deserves to be mentioned in the same territory as Betty Davis and Yvonne Fair!
