Tribute To Teagarden

LP (Item 546806) Capitol, Late 50s — Condition: Near Mint-
With "Stars Fell On Alabama", "Our Monday Date", "Casanova's Lament", "Doctor Jazz", "After You've Gone", "If I Could Be With You", "The Shiek Of Araby", "Beale St Blues", and more.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono rainbow label pressing. Cover has minimal wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jack Teagarden

Portrait Of Mr T
Roulette, 1963. Near Mint-
A beautiful portrait of the later Jack Teagarden – that musician who'd matured wonderfully with age, and really brought the best of that experience to bear on his records like this! Jack sings on a handful of tracks, but really spends much of the record on trombone – blown with a style ... LP, Vinyl record album

Think Well Of Me
Verve, 1962. Very Good+
(Mono pressing. Cover has a small corner bump and light wear.) LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1920s/1930s/1940s. Near Mint-
Seminal sides from the legendary Jack Teagarden – recorded during his prime years, with less of the broken-down feel of his later dates (not that we mind that, as it's one of the things that make those records so endearing!) Titles include "My Kinda Love", "Never Had A Reason ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Hackett

Coast Concert
Capitol, 1955. Sealed
A classic set from brassman Bobby Hackett – the kind of set that really helped him reach a big new audience in the postwar years! The style here is trad, but the set was recorded for Capitol in LA – so there's this sort of sparkling vibe to the whole thing too – a bit of an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington

Ellington 55
Capitol, 1955. Very Good
One of Duke's most popular albums of the 50s – but we won't hold that against him! The session's one of a number of 50s outings that revisit older classics with the new level of quality offered in the studio – and it's got a similar feel to some of Duke's work for Bethlehem around the ... Capitol, Late 40s/Early 50s. Very Good-
Basically a 10" issue of a slightly abbreviated version of The Birth of The Cool, legendary work from Davis that needs virtually no introduction from us – large group sessions that virtually define the "cool" in cool jazz! The work's quite different from Davis' earlier bop ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, Late 60s. Near Mint-
A great lost chapter in the Cannonball/David Axelrod story! The record features Cannon's classic quintet performing some longer, more serious works with orchestral backing – and the sound is vaguely similar to some of Axelrod's "high concept" work for Capitol. The record features ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, 1952. Very Good+
Beautiful modernist work from Kenton – one of the first albums to cull his genius together as a whole, filled with the kind of tracks that perfectly sum up his unique approach at the time! If you've ever wondered what makes Kenton so great, this is the album to begin with – as it's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, Mid 40s/Early 50s. Very Good
A great set of tracks by this oft-overlooked swing guitarist. Kress had a very nice single-note style that swung with a beautiful mellow groove – and these rare sessions from the mid 40s capture him in some great small group settins with players like Hank D'Amico, Stan Freeman, and a very ... Capitol, Early 50s. Very Good+
Wonderful work from Kenton – warm and seductive, yet also modern and adventurous, tunes that are familiar, yet inexplicably transformed by the Kentonite approach! The record's got a similar feel to some of the best work coming out of the Kenton school at the time – and players on the ... LP, Vinyl record album
