❔

One of the heaviest albums ever made – and a monstrous bit of organ funk that never gets old! The Mohawks were a one-off studio group led by arranger/keyboardist Alan Hawkshaw (the "hawk" in the Mohawk name), and they're working here in a mad London mix of beat group grooving, soul jazz Hammond, West End seediness, and even a bit of early rocksteady! The grooves are tremendous – a sweet blend of heavy bass, tight drums, and hard-wailing organ – never quitting all the way through, and served up on a set of nearly all original tunes! Includes the classic "The Champ", sampled more times than we can count, and a blueprint for early hip hop – plus the cuts "Can You Hear Me", "Landscape", "Senior Thump", "Dr Jeckyll & Hyde Park", "Hip Jigger", "Baby Hold On", and "Sound Of The Witchdoctors".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Stevie Wonder

Talking Book
Tamla, 1972. Used
One of the classics, and an album that's filled with a sense of majesty and power that will knock you dead – despite the stupid cover of Stevie sitting on a hill, playing in the dirt! By this point, Stevie knows he's on top of the world – and he's honing the sophisticated experiments ... CD
Blue Note, 1963. Used
A classic straight session by Joe Henderson – cut during his early years, when he was breaking out of the box with a heck of a lot of fire! Kenny Dorham's subdued lyricism complements Joe's impassioned playing over the angular, yet still-swinging rythm section of Andrew Hill, Eddie Kahn and ... CD

Stan Getz

Focus
Verve, 1961. Used
Oft-overlooked album that's actually one of Getz's most far-reaching of the 60s! Recorded in the year before he got caught up in his bossa pop frenzy, the record shows Getz as a darkly toned modernist, weaving out complex solos over the album's extended suite "Focus", written and ... CD

Lester Bowie's New York Organ Ensemble

Organizer
DIW (Japan), 1991. Used
Lester Bowie cooks it nicely with an organ-based group – and one that features work on the Hammond by Amina Claudine Myers! Despite the hokey cover of the set, there's actually a pretty nice sound to the record – one that extrapolates from an older soul jazz tradition, and gives the ... CD
