Songs We Taught Your Mother

LP (Item 544478) Prestige/Bluesville, 1961 — Condition: Very Good+
Raw, rootsy blues – recorded by a trio of gals who are definitely old enough to have taught your mom a few songs! The set's got a mixed blues/jazz vibe – that sweet 20s/30s mode when the two genres would often blur nicely together – and players include Sidney De Paris on tuba, JC Higginbotham on trombone, Buster Bailey on clarinet, Cliff Jackson on piano, Henry Goodwin on trumpet, Cecil Scott on clarinet, and Willie The Lion Smith on piano. Singers alternate tracks on the set – and titles include Albert Hunter singing "I Got Myself A Workin Man" and "I Got A Mind To Ramble", Lucille Hegamin singing "St Louis Blues" and "You'll Want My Love", and Victoria Spivey singing "Black Snake Blues" and "Got The Blues So Bad".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A late 60s album on Chess Records – but one that serves to bring together all the best early work that Muddy Waters did for the label – including lots of original 45s and 78s! Roosevelt Sykes

Music Is My Business
Blue Labor, 1975. Near Mint-
An obscure 70s album from the legendary Roosevelt Sykes – but a set that captures the singer and pianist at the height of his powers! Bobby Bland

Come Fly With Me
ABC, 1978. Near Mint-
Great work from Bobby Blue Bland – one of the few artists to rise up at the end of the 50s, and still find a way to chart their own path forward in soul with fresh material like this! Bobby's voice is still incredible here, and he works with production from Al Bell and Monk Higgins, the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blues Consolidated (aka Double Feature)
Duke/MCA, Early 60s. Sealed

Impulse issue of one of Ra's best recordings from the late 50s – a killer early session from Sun Ra! JJ Johnson

Dial J J 5
Columbia, 1957. Near Mint-
One of JJ's best from the late 50s – a tightly crackling hardbop set, recorded very much in the manner of his classic JJ Inc album! The sound here is a bit more compact overall – with some shorter tracks that really allow Johnson to display his keen sense of economy on his horn, while ... LP, Vinyl record album

Larry Coryell

Coryell
Vanguard, 1969. Very Good+
Maybe the funkiest album that guitarist Larry Coryell ever cut – his debut as a leader, and a fuzzy, freaky set that features some massively heavy drums from the great Bernard Purdie! The set's jazz at the core, but has lots of rock elements too – including vocals from Coryell on a few ... LP, Vinyl record album
