We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Love Affair
Capitol, 1978. Very Good
A wicked set from the great Gary Bartz – one done after his mid 70s association with Larry Mizell – but still very much in a similar groove! The album's a great blend of Gary's soulful alto work with sweet electric backings – often put together with that angular stepping mode he ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cuban Fire
Capitol, 1956. Very Good
One of Kenton's greatest records, and the one in which he proves his dedication to Latin styles, by serving up a killer batch of Afro-Cuban tracks with an incredibly authentic feel. Mercy, Mercy, Mercy!
Capitol, 1966. Very Good
If the 60's ever had a "hit" jazz record, it was probably this one! The tracks have a long ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, Early 50s. Very Good
Wonderful work from Kenton – warm and seductive, yet also modern and adventurous, tunes that are familiar, yet inexplicably transformed by the Kentonite approach! Two Of A Kind
Capitol, 1982. Very Good+ Gatefold
A classic pairing of the guitar of Earl Klugh and the keyboards of Bob James – and a set that really makes some great steps forward out of a blend of the acoustic and electric sounds from each player! Capitol, Mid 50s. Very Good+
A nice 50s set that aims to recreate the raw sound of Kansas City in the 30s – right down to a cover image featuring nearly-nude waitresses waiting on tables! Features work by Julia Lee & Her Boy Friends, Jay McShann, Bus Moten, and Walter Brown with Ben Webster. LP, Vinyl record album
Composer's Holiday
Capitol, Mid 50s. Very Good+

Wishful Thinking
Capitol, 1984. Very Good+
Smooth fusion from one of the greats – and although an 80s set, a record that still holds onto most of the best warmth of Earl Klugh's earlier years! The production is surprisingly laidback at points – never too many 80s gimmicks or easy attempts at a hit – and Earl plays with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1964. Very Good-
One of Stanley Turrentine's few organ-based sessions for Blue Note – recorded in the company of his lovely wife Shirley Scott, who was really a cooker on the Hammond! The album's got a much stronger sound than most of Shirley's own from the time – played by a solid group that includes ... LP, Vinyl record album
MPS, 1975. Very Good
One of George Duke's best albums for the MPS label – and a set that has a sound that's a little bit more soul than before! The album uses a fair bit of vocals alongside Duke's funky keyboards – but in a way that's not nearly as smooth as some of his albums for Epic, and which still ... LP, Vinyl record album
