Woody Shaw Live Vol 3

CD

✈
Majestic work from Woody Shaw – the third volume of a rare live performance from 1977, one that features Woody at the height of his powers, running through long and beautiful tracks with a deeply soulful feel. The style here is similar to Woody's best work of the mid 70s on the Muse label – extended tracks performed with a group that includes Stafford James on bass, Steve Turre on trombone, Mulgrew Miller or Larry Willis on piano, and Victor Lewis on drums. Titles include "Ginseng People", "Organ Grinder", "Teotiuacan", "Seventh Avenue", and "Little Red's Fantasy".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Woody Shaw

Imagination
Muse/Savoy, 1988. Used
A late date for Woody Shaw, but a great one too – a bit more straightforward than some of his more righteous albums of the 70s, but still proof that Shaw is easily one of the greatest trumpeters of his generation! The album's got a laidback sort of feel, and features a fair bit of familiar ... CD

Woody Shaw

Lotus Flower
Enja (Germany), 1982. Used
Beautiful later work from Woody Shaw – perfectly honed, in the soaring, stretching, soulful exploratory style of his best work in the 70s! The group's a quartet with Mulgrew Miller on piano, Stafford James on bass, Tony Reedus on drums, and Steve Turre joining Woody in the frontline – ... CD

Russell Gunn

Love Stories
High Note, 2008. Used
Pretty great stuff from Russell Gunn – a jazz musician who's always bringing something soulful to the table! This time around, there's some great keyboards in the mix – played by Orrin Evans, and used in ways that are sometimes funky, sometimes spacey – and always a great mix ... CD

Cedar Walton

One Flight Down
High Note, 2006. Used
Mostly a trio set from Cedar Walton, but Vincent Herring steps in on alto for 2 tracks – fleshing the sound out nicely! At this point in his career, Cedar has a hard time making a bad record – and his innate sense of fluidity on the keys of the piano has been nicely inflected with a ... CD

Esbjorn Svensson on piano, Dan Berglund on bass, and Magnus Ostrom on drums. CD
High Note, Late 90s. Used
Wonderful late work from Charles Earland – one of the few 70s players who never lost his fire! No matter what the setting, Earland had a command of the organ that came out wonderfully on record – a mean, lean approach to solos that always kept things interesting, and a great ear for ... CD

Hal Galper

Ivory Forest Redux
Origin, 1979. Used
Excellent work from pianist Hal Galper – and proof that he was one of the most electric keyboardists of his generation, even when working acoustically – as on this record! The only real electric element here is the presence of guitarist John Scofield in the quartet – but Galper ... CD
