An incredible record from Billie Holiday – and not really a proper sort of "album" at all! Instead, the set features the posthumous release of tapes from sessions recorded with pianist Jimmy Rowles and bassist Artie Shapiro – tracks that feature Billie singing in a looser mode than on Verve, but also talking a fair bit too! The conversation is what really makes the record – as it shows a bad-rapping Billie who's often a lot more self-possessed than you'd guess from the sadder sound of her classic recordings. Her voice is easily recognizable, but the subject matter is often quite surprising – and surprisingly well-recorded. Titles include "Rappin About Jimmy Rowles", "I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good", "Just Friends", "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone", and "Everything Happens To Me". © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
