LP, Vinyl record album

✈
❔
Really sweet later work from The Chi Lites – proof that the group were still going strong long after their initial chart hits! The sound here is less Brunswick Chicago soul than before – and the group step along in warm and sophisticated backings that sparkle in the best Chi-Sound style – uptempo at some times, but sweet and mellow at others. The vocals are superb – easily adaptable to both sorts of settings, but especially great on the ballads – which really seem to benefit from the move away from some of the more cliched styles that the Chi-Lites were falling into during their last years on Brunswick. Eugene Record produced, and titles include "Love Shock", "Round & Round", "Heavenly Body", "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You", "Give Me A Dream", and a remake of "Have You Seen Her".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some light wear, cutout notch.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gene Chandler

Get Down
Chi Sound/20th Century, 1978. Very Good+
The legendary Gene Chandler gets down, and gets down good – in this classic late 70s set of clubby numbers and upbeat groovers! The set's one of the best moments on the Chi-Soul series from producer Carl Davis – and features a nicely evolved version of earlier Chicago soul modes from ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Chandler

'80
Chi Sound/20th Century, 1980. Very Good+
A nice record of modern soul that got a bit overlooked at the time because of the poor fate of the Chi-Sound label. The record's filled with Chicago soul talent like Tom Tom 84, Sonny Sanders, and Carl Davis, and it's a good updating of Gene's Chicago soul sound towards a style that's more modern ... Gene Chandler

When You're #1
Chi Sound/20th Century, 1979. Near Mint-
Later work by Gene Chandler – but a surprisingly great little set overall, and proof that Carl Davis was really stretching for greatness in the glory years of his Chi Sound label! Rather than rehash the styles he'd hit with on Vee Jay, Constellation, Mercury, or Brunswick – Chandler ... LP, Vinyl record album

Walter Jackson

Send In The Clowns
Chi Sound, 1979. Near Mint-
Forget the million times you've heard the schmaltzy title tune of this one – and check out Walter's version! Like most of his work from the time, the album's an incredibly mature batch of soul tracks – recorded in a very adult style that was similar to Teddy Pendergrass' work from the ... Chess/MCA, Late 60s. Very Good+
A collection of tracks recorded during the late 60s and early 70s – when the Dells were at their peak, recording at Cadet with arrangers and producers like Charles Stepney, Bobby Miller, and Don Davis. Titles include "Love Is Blue (I Can Sing A Rainbow)", "There Is", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Esther Phillips

Confessin' The Blues
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+
A 70s album, issued at a time when Esther Phillips was really riding high with her records on the Kudo label – but a set that brings together unissued sides recorded for Atlantic in the 60s! The style is a great mix of rootsy soul and hipper jazz – arranged by Onzy Matthews on side one ... LP, Vinyl record album

Melba Moore

Melba (Epic)
Epic/CBS, 1978. Near Mint-
Melba Moore gets some great help here from the Philly soul duo of McFadden & Whitehead – whose soaring styles proves to be a perfect fit for her amazing voice! Gordon Staples & The String Thing

Strung Out
Motown, 1970. Near Mint-
A damn funky record – way more so than you might expect from the "string" in the title! The group's kind of an answer to the Soulful Strings ensemble headed by Richard Evans for Cadet/Concept in Chicago – and like that group, it mixes up funky rhythms with some sweet large ... Cheryl Lynn

Cheryl Lynn
Columbia, 1978. Near Mint-
Massive work from the great Cheryl Lynn – and a key bridge between late 70s disco and the newer grooves of the 80s club scene! The album's a mix of midtempo groovers with a few mellower tracks – and it's got a tight, slightly jazzy sound that was very fresh at the time, and which still ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philadelphia International, 1982. Near Mint-
Although they didn't have as big of chart success as in earlier years, the O'Jays managed to do alright as the 80s moved in on them. Their sweet vocal style was a perfect match for Philly International's move to more modern soul production, and this album has them nicely set up by McFadden & ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ashford & Simpson

Stay Free
Warner, 1979. Near Mint-
Great stuff! From Motown songwriters to world-class superstars, the trip was a well-deserved one for Valerie Simpson and Nick Ashford – and this album's perhaps their crowning achievement in sophisticated club soul! The record's got a great groove that offers a more soulful version of disco ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sylvers

Forever Yours
Casablanca, 1978. Near Mint-
After cutting some pop disco crossover work for Capitol, the Sylvers finally get the chance to do the real deal here for Casablanca – grooving on tunes that burn stronger and groove longer than before – and which really set the scene for the bass-heavy funk of west coast groups to come! ...
