Genesis

LP (Item 41538) Prestige, Late 40s/Early 50s — Condition: Very Good+
2LP Gatefold
A great collection of Stitt's early 78rpm work for Prestige – featuring loads of tight, short, bop tracks cut in quartet or quintet format. Players include Bud Powell, JJ Johnson, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Duke Jordan, and John Lewis – and titles include "Blue Mode", "Teapot", "Sonny Side", "Sunset", "Later", "Mean To Me", "Our Very Own", "Jeepers Creepers", "Down With It", "Splinter", and "Bud's Blues". Loads of stuff – with 32 tracks in all!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Roost, 1956. Very Good
The title might sound a bit clinical, but the music within is anything but – and instead is that sort of special, magical work that always makes Sonny Stitt a real cut above most of his contemporaries! The notes try to link Stitt to Charlie Parker – but apart from a postwar sense of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Roost, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
Beautiful Roost material from Sonny Stitt – solid, mature, and extremely well-placed lines on the alto sax – all caught at a level that's higher than most of his contemporaries were dising out at the time! The boppier side of Stitt's roots is nicely suppressed here – and in its ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Stitt

Primitivo Soul
Prestige, 1964. Very Good+
A really great session from Sonny Stitt – and one with a slightly different vibe than usual! That vibe comes from the work of two Latin percussionists – Marcelino Valdez on congas and Osvaldo Martinez on bongos – both of whom really a a lot to the groove next to the drums of ... Sonny Stitt

My Mother's Eyes
Pacific Jazz, 1963. Near Mint-
A rare one for Sonny Stitt – an album for Pacific Jazz recorded on the west coast, but done with some hard-burning organ work by Charles Kynard that easily matches any of Stitt's best soul jazz sides from the east! There's a tightly cooking feel to the entire set that's really great – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cadet, 1960s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
LP...$9.99 11.99
A very nicely selected 2LP set of tracks from Stitt's oft-overlooked years at Argo/Chess! The tracks have him in great company that includes the pianists Barry Harris, John Young, and Ronnie Matthews – and if you know Stitt's style from the time, you know that his choice of piano player made ... Two classic Eric Dolphy albums – back to back in a single set! First up us Outward Bound – Eric Dolphy's first album ever as a leader – recorded almost immediately after his arrival on the New York scene! The sound here is already bolder and stronger than the Dolphy experiments ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tadd Dameron

Fontainebleau
Prestige, 1956. Near Mint-
A beautiful album of material by Tadd Dameron – and one that still stands as one of his greatest moments! The record features 5 long readings of classic Dameron compositions – like "The Scene Is Clean", "Fontainebleau", and "Delerium" – all played by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Illinois Jacquet

How High The Moon
Prestige, Late 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold

John Coltrane

Last Trane
Prestige, 1957/1958. Very Good
A nice set – despite being kind of a put-together batch of tunes! The album's titled "The Last Trane" because it represents the last material that Prestige Records had in its vault from the time that John Coltrane was recording for the label in the late 50s. Titles were recorded ... LP, Vinyl record album

Willis Jackson

Gator's Groove
Prestige, 1969. Near Mint-
A great lost session from tenorist Willis Jackson – who also plays his gator horn here – right up there with some of his best groovers of the 60s, and recorded with a nice little group of fresh players! The lesser-known organist Jackie Ivory is on the session, and Wild Bill Jennings ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons

Sock
Prestige, 1965. Very Good-
A striking title – and a strong set of grooves, even if the tracks were pulled from a variety of different sessions, and not recorded as a unified album. Jug plays tenor on all cuts – working in formats that range from a Mal Waldron led trio to larger honking groups with horn players ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Odyssey
Prestige, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
Mid 60s issue of earlier work that Miles cut in the 50s – some great tracks that show him breaking from the tighter shorter bop work of the earlier years, and heading into some stretched out sides that have a very open-ended approach. The group on the session is mostly a quartet – with ... LP, Vinyl record album
