Hang On Ramsey

LP (Item 38827) Cadet, 1965 — Condition: Very Good

Easily one of Ramsey Lewis' most successful records – featuring the hit soul jazz style that he forged with the Young/Holt rhythm combo, honed to perfection before a live crowd at The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach. The record's a key part of Ramsey's live recorded output – showing the trio in pyrotechnic form before the kind of packed-house audiences they were playing to nightly at the time. Includes swinging versions of "Hard Day's Night", "High Heel Sneakers", and "Hang On Sloopy" – plus the original cut "Movin Easy".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has light ring and edge wear.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Movie Album
Cadet, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Jazzy and classy – and one of the first of Ramsey's albums to feature him working with larger arrangements instead of the usual trio. In this case, the whole thing was arranged and conducted by Richard Evans – with a spacey hip sound that's not too far from some of Ramsey's later work ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Back To The Roots
Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Ramsey's excellent late 60s funky piano records for Cadet – featuring his second trio with Cleveland Eaton on bass and Morris Jennings on drums, and a sound that's nicely expanded from the mid 60s hit years. Charles Stepney plays a bit of organ on the album, and Henry Gibson gives the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Max Roach & Art Blakey

Percussion Discussion (Tough/Max)
Chess/Cadet/Argo, 1957/1958. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A 70s issue of 2 late 50s hard bop sides released by Argo and Cadet. Though the title and packaging might lead you to believe Max and Art are performing side by side, it's really just two albums slapped together, and not necessarily inappropriately, in a gatefold sleeve to sell easily. A 70s 2-fer that combines 2 albums recorded for Cadet in the mid 60s – one issued under Nelson's name, the other under Lou Donaldson's, but both featuring arrangements by Nelson. A great step forward for Chicago organist Odell Brown – and maybe a hint of the influence he'd have on the world of 70s soul to come! Arista, 1964/1977. Near Mint-
Tremendous work from trumpeter Ted Curson – and one of the few records that shows up often in his oeuvre, but which is every bit as great as his rare and expensive albums! Side one features killer material from Curson's group with tenorist Bill Barron – three cuts recorded in Paris in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roland Kirk

Slightly Latin
Limelight, 1965. Near Mint-
Unbelievable! This is one of the maddest Roland Kirk albums of all time – and it's also one of the hardest to find! The title says "Slightly Latin", but it's more of a mixed-up Now Sound/Bacharach-ish blend of orchestrations and voices, plus Exotica tinges, with Roland playing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Harris

Excursions
Atlantic, 1973. Sealed 2LP Gatefold
A super-long batch of messed-up funky jazz from Eddie Harris! The record's got Eddie working all aspects of the electric sax – in a similar style to some of his other work on the best Atlantic albums of the 70s (like Instant Death of Plug It In) – and the group features a shifting cast ... Lionel Hampton

Please Sunrise
Brunswick, 1972. Near Mint-
Sweet vibes from the great Lionel Hampton – sounding different here than both his early swing years, and his later small combo modes – and working in a style that has his instrument in the lead over hip Chicago soul backings from the team at Brunswick Records! The album's got a nicely ... LP, Vinyl record album
