Wise Guy

LP (Item 32909) Sire/Ze, 1982 — Condition: Near Mint-
Originally: 9.99
Ha! This one really takes us back! The set was a massive breakthrough for August Darnell – one of his biggest hits since his day with Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, with an equally appealing approach to the dancefloor. Tracks mix early 80s New York club styles with Darnell's mad retro/exotic take on the world – coming out with a sound that's slightly hokey, but equally catchy! Includes the hits "Annie (I'm Not Your Daddy)", "I'm A Wonderful Thing Baby", and "Stool Pigeon" – plus the cuts "Imitation", "I'm Corrupt", "No Fish Today", and "Loving You Made A Fool Out Of Me".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Temptations

Solid Rock
Gordy, 1972. Very Good- Gatefold
A masterful album of righteous trippy soul – recorded during the height of the Temptations' strong association with Norman Whitfield! The record has more than a few political/social conscience songs – like "Take A Look Around", "Stop The War Now", and "Superstar ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stormin'
Tabu, 1977. Very Good+
A set that definitely lives up to its title – a stone stormer from Brainstorm – one of the tightest funky ensembles of their generation, and one of the few who could go deep while still laying down a groove! Betty Wright

Betty Wright Live
Alston/TK, 1978. Very Good+
A fantastic live album from the great Betty Wright – and one of the few recorded documents of the way that classic soul singers would evolve the nature of their songs in a concert setting! Betty's recording for Alston/TK here, but the mode she uses is one that would grace countless ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1964. Very Good
Atlantic soul live – recorded in a great grassroots setting! 20th Century, 1976. Very Good+
Carl Douglas' classic pop soul track about "Kung Fu Fighting" is an enduring favorite, as we're reminded everytime our local UHF station cops it for a promo for a martial arts double feature they're running on Saturday afternoon! The rest of the tracks on here aren't as great, but there's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Arista, 1979. Very Good+
Norman Connors at the top of his game – working here with backing from his own Starship Orchestra, in a groove that's completely funky, deeply soulful, and touched with a fair bit of jazz as well! Thelonious Monk

Unique Thelonious Monk
Riverside, 1956. Very Good+
The session's billed as "very personal treatments of great standards" – and it's a great twist on familiar material, all given the Thelonius touch! There's less of Monk's creative composition and angular group arrangements going on here – and instead, the album's almost a ... LP, Vinyl record album
