Echo

LP (Item 26841) BYG/Actuel (France), 1969 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold

Very heavy duty stuff from Dave Burrell – and perhaps his most "out" session. The record features one long track – a full-on attack of free playing by a group that includes Archie Shepp, Sunny Murray, Grachan Moncur, Clifford Thornton, and Arthur Jones. One of the most unbridled of all the BYG sessions – and fiercer stuff than we've heard from Burrell on other LPs.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Steve Lacy

Epistrophy
BYG (France), 1969. Very Good
A strong French session from 1969 – one in which Lacy gets back to his roots with a bunch of Monk compositions – working in the angular mode that first helped him get modern in the late 50s, after starting his career as a trad jazz player. The group on the set features JF Jenny-Clark ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clifford Thornton

Ketchaoua
BYG/Actuel (France), 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
An early gem from the great Clifford Thornton – maybe his best-known album over the years, thanks to its placement on the post-68 series of French free jazz releases on the BYG/Actuel label – but a set that's got a much more New York vibe overall, and stands as a key precursor to so ... Blase
BYG/Actuel (France), 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the hardest to find of the Shepp albums for Actuel, especially in this original format! These are long, spiritual tracks that comprise some of his best European recordings of the decade, and the titles include "There is a Balm in Gilead", "Touareg", and "My ... LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
A totally great set by Cannonball Adderley – one of his funkiest albums ever, recorded live at Operation Breadbasket under the supervision of Jesse Jackson, and a session in which the band is cooking a lot more than on some of their other albums from the time! The set grooves hard with some ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Crescent
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
Sharp-edged John Coltrane at his best – a record that we'd rank right up there with Love Supreme, and which is a key transition point in Coltrane's musical ideas! There's a very strong edge to Coltrane's tone here – and even on the mellower ballads, he plays with a sound not always ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tommy Flanagan

Tokyo Recital
Pablo, 1975. Near Mint-
The title says "recital", but the album's no stiff, starched concert affair – as Tommy Flanagan is right at home on the piano, playing with a fluid grace that makes the record one of his best from the 70s! There's a simple, unadorned quality to the album – one that really ... LP, Vinyl record album
