Free Jazz

LP (Item 2557) Atlantic, 1961 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
Also available
Ornette Coleman — Free Jazz (180 gram pressing) ... LP 39.99
Ornette Coleman — Free Jazz (with bonus track) ... CD 4.99
The title gets it right – as the album's easily the closest thing to free jazz that Ornette Coleman ever recorded – an album-length improvisation played by a "double quartet" that's overflowing with classic players! The style here is a fair bit like John Coltrane's Ascension album for Impulse – and like that one, the session features Ornette and his contemporaries really stretching out – blowing like never heard before on record, and working in a highly unstructured setting! Other players include Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Scott LaFaro on bass – alongside regular group members Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and both Ed Blackwell and Billy Higgins on drums. One long track – just titled "Free Jazz"!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Red & purple label pressing with 1A matrix, in the die-cut gatefold cover with surface and edge wear, a cutout hole and some discoloration from age.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ornette Coleman

Soapsuds Soapsuds
Artists House, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Ornette's great albums for the obscure Artists House label, and different from the one that he recorded with James Blood Ulmer, which was more of a straight-on Harmelodic work. This one's got him playing a set of tender sensitive duets with bassist and longtime accompanyist Charlie Haden. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Broken Shadows
Columbia, Early 70s/1982. Near Mint-
8 rare unissued tracks from Coleman's brief stint at Columbia, and stuff that was recorded during the same period as his Skies of America and Science Fiction LPs. The groups on the record are strong, and the playing is mostly in a pre-Harmelodic vein. Players include Dewey Redman, Don Cherry, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Shape Of Jazz To Come
Atlantic, 1959. Very Good+
An album that certainly lives up to the promise of its title – as it's filled with amazing instrumentation, groundbreaking compositions, and a sound in jazz that few ears could imagine at the time! The groove here is extremely modal – all instruments rolling along on the same rhythmic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Tomorrow Is the Question!
Contemporary, 1959. Near Mint-
Tomorrow may be the question, but the record screams "today!" – and even this many years after its recording, this early set by Ornette Coleman has an energy and presence that cannot be denied! The sound here is kind of a rougher take on the mode that would gel more strongly on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Body Meta
Artists House, 1978. Near Mint- Gatefold
Heavy duty stuff, and one of Ornette's best LPs from the 70's. Recorded in 1976, this is a perfect demonstration of the harmelodic style, with the whole group jaunting along in tight choppy bits. James Blood Ulmer's on guitar, and the sound is very dark and deep. Tracks include "Voice ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Ornette On Tenor
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+
An early standout set from Ornette Coleman – and a record that features him blowing on tenor, instead of his usual alto – as you might guess from the title! In a way, Ornette's playing on tenor is almost freer than his alto work – a bit more open-ended and exploratory, stretching ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Skies Of America
Columbia, 1972. Near Mint-
A brilliant large ensemble work from Ornette Coleman – ambitious material recorded with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Cobham

Crosswinds
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint-
A masterful album from Billy Cobham – and maybe the best 70s record to really demonstrate the unique place he found for himself in 70s fusion! The album soars with a sound that really lives up to its cover image – but it's also not the heavy-jamming affair of some of Billy's more ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+
A great early album by this famous 70s bassist – originally issued as the album Infinite Search on Embryo, but expanded here with the additional track "Cerecka". One of the greatest moments ever from bassist Miroslav Vitous – a very cool album recorded for the trippy Vortex ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Charles & Milt Jackson

Soul Meeting
Atlantic, Early 60s. Near Mint-
Fairly decent jazz session, and one in which Ray plays alto sax and electric piano, along with his usual acoustic piano. Milt Jackson is on vibes, of course, and the rest of the group includes Kenny Burrell, Percy Heath, and Art Taylor. Titles include "Soul Meeting", "X Ray ... LP, Vinyl record album
