Sun, Moon, & Herbs

LP (Item 20724) Atco, 1971 — Condition: Very Good
Gatefold

Mac really steps out on this one – pushing past his usual hip studio take on New Orleans soul, to a more expansive style that includes performances by a host of surprise guests like Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, PP Arnold, Graham Bond, and Doris Troy. That loping, trippy groove of John's is still firmly in place, shifted slightly – kind of a New Orleans meets post 60s London style – and titles include "Craney Crow", "Black John The Conqueror", "Zu Zu Mamou", and "Pots On Fiyo".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Yellow label pressing, including the printed inner sleeve. Cover has some edge wear and splitting in the top seam.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Dr John

Gris Gris
Atco, 1968. Near Mint-
The great Dr John at his freaky deaky best – working here in a mindblowing mix of New Orleans roots and late 60s psych – all served up in some heady studio space and instrumental touches! The sound's unlike anything that ever went before – and is way better here than on some of ... LP, Vinyl record album

King Curtis

Everybody's Talkin'
Atco, 1972. Very Good+
King Curtis' last album of studio work for Atlantic – pulled from a number of sessions recorded in the year before his untimely early death! The sound here is tightened up a bit from King's grooves of the 60s – done with a style that still draws on the Atlantic soul sound that Curtis ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impact

Impact
Atco, 1976. Very Good+
Plenty of Impact from this great Philly group – a soaring quartet who harmonize with some great Bobby Eli arrangements – at a level that shines as strongly as the best 70s work by Blue Magic or The Spinners! Impact never broke the big time as strongly, but they're a great group in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michel'le

Michel'le
Ruthless/Atco, 1989. Very Good+
Dre's second, and more successful venture into R&B (counting World Class Wreckin' Crew, of course). With a number of very well received pop R&B numbers, including "No More Lies", "Nicety", "Something In My Heart" and 'Keep Watchin'". 11 tracks in all. LP, Vinyl record album
Atco, 1966. Very Good+
A landmark set of grooves by this excellent Detroit group – a trio who recorded for the local indie Karen, but got a much bigger boost towards fame when their record was picked up by Atlantic! The set's one of the killer 60s Motor Town sets produced by Ollie McLaughlin – and like the ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1971. Very Good+
A great album filled with hard breaks, tight choppy guitars, and a deep funky sound. This is one of the best early albums by the Nite Liters, and it's filled with great grooves like "Funky-Doo", "Stinkin Charlie", and "K-Jee" – but just about every track is a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bar-Kays

Black Rock
Volt, 1971. Very Good
An album that's every bit as great as the title might imply – heavy guitar-based funk from the second version of The Bar-Kays – one that uses the new instrumental focus to push a groove that's much more black rock than before! There's still a bit of trumpet from the past, but the sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Jackson & The Citizen's Band

Billy Jackson & The Citizen's Band
RCA, 1976. Near Mint-

Volt, 1972. Very Good Gatefold
A tasty bit of political funk by one of the best groups on Stax! The record's got that heavy guitar-driven funk sound that was the group's calling card at the time – but it's also infused with a righteous sense of social consciousness, clearly influenced by Curtis Mayfield and Sly Stone. ... Barbara Mason

Lady Love
Buddah, 1973. Very Good
A pivotal album for Barbara Mason – one in which she takes the little girl soul sound of earlier albums, and turns it into a sophisticated range of emotions that foreshadows later Philly work by singers like Jean Carn and Phyllis Hyman! Despite the Philly arrangements by Ronnie Baker, Norman ... LP, Vinyl record album

Car Wash – Original Soundtrack
MCA, 1976. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A solid bit of heavy funk – and one of the last strong-selling soundtracks of the blacksploitation era! Sure, you know the hit "Car Wash", but there's plenty of other great numbers that rank the 2LP set right up there with the best of its genre. There's a lot of nice instrumentals ...
