Don't Turn Around

LP (Item 1848) Today, 1972 — Condition: Very Good-

Epic harmony soul by this excellent sweet soul group! Black Ivory were just kids when they recorded this session – but they had a sophistication that pushed them way past any of their contemporaries on the east coast scene. The band are very lucky to have the talents of the great Patrick Adams – originally singer himself, but who wisely made a move to producer once he'd heard the rich talents of the young group. Adams perfectly handles the sweet voices of the group, building up their raw emotions into a dreamy web of harmony vocals to rival the best work of The Stylistics, The Delfonics, and other older groups. Includes the classic "Don't Turn Around", written by Adams, plus "You and I", "Our Future", "Surrender", and "If I Could Be a Mirror". Heavenly harmony soul, and a classic of the east coast scene!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing. Cover has a mostly split top seam and splitting in the bottom seam.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Lucky Peterson

Our Future
Today, Early 70s. Very Good+
The "our future" in the title is not only a reference to the album's semi-hit single, but also to the fact that Peterson was only 5 years old when the set was recorded! Peterson's main claim to fame at this point is the fact that he's a fairly good talent on the organ – especially ... LP, Vinyl record album

Julius Brockington

Sophisticated Funk
Today, 1972. Very Good-
Funky keyboard tracks from Julius Brockington – a mad early 70s figure who not only cut some wild funk, but who also ended up doing a fair bit of gospel work in later years. This set's a good bit of stoner funk tracks – in the wilder mode of the Perception/Today label – and it's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ready For The World

Ready For The World
MCA, 1985. Very Good+
Classic post-Prince commercial 80s soul! Even though Prince, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and even Andre Cymone are nowhere in sight, this classic 80s LP could just as well have come out of Minneapolis as Flint, Michigan, and we mean that in the best possible way. "Oh Sheila" has ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Scott-Heron

Bridges
Arista, 1977. Very Good+
An oft-overlooked jazzy gem from Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson – and a beautifully swinging session that has Gil toning it down a bit, and working into a nicely musical groove that gets past the heavy politics of earlier years! The record's a great showcase for the more upbeat side of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Reflections
Arista, 1981. Very Good-
A great little album that's often overshadowed by its hit – the 15 minute "B-Movie", which was sort of an overly-wrought protest piece about how the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 was going to turn America into a bad b-movie. Not that that track's bad – although its ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chic

C'est Chic
Atantic, 1978. Near Mint-
A massive set from the legendary Chic – and a set that has the dancefloor combo coming down perfectly throughout! A landmark album that hardly needs any introduction – as it's one of the most famous soundtracks, if not soul records, of the 70s! Universal Energy
EMI (France), 1977. Very Good
Spacey disco stuff, recorded in Europe, and with a good electronic feel that's more warm and analog than it is cold and futuristic. Brunswick, Late 60s. Near Mint-
One of a great run of grooves from the legendary team of bassist Eldee Young and drummer Redd Holt – a smoking batch of instrumentals done in the best Chicago soul style of the time!
