Afro Rock

LP (Item 176390) De Wolfe (UK), 1971 — Condition: Very Good+
Also available
Luis Vecchio — Afro Rock ... LP 32.99
A totally killer sound library set – every bit as funky as others that have been issued under the Afro Rock title – but a lot more obscure! The group here has wicked bass and plenty of percussion next to the drums – and the top of the sound also has some horn work that underscores more contemporary soul touches – as the whole thing holds together like some of the best Afro-inspired work on the London scene at the time, with maybe some keyboard touches that feel like they're lifted out of the Bay Area or East LA! The whole thing is a wonderfully rhythmic, totally funky party – and titles include "Facade", "Renegade", "Megaton", "Boss", "Nsambei", "Cult", "Green Hell", and "Waboco".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing! Cover has some light wear, tape traces on the spine which is also split a bit, and back has some stamps. Label has a bit of marker – vinyl is nice!)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Hey Culligan Man
Culligan, 1966. Very Good+
A totally cool advertising relic from the Mad Men generation – a radio album of spots for the Culligan water softener – most with music and some very cool spoken dialogue, along with the famous Culligan slogan too! LP, Vinyl record album

Delia Derbyshire & Elsa Stansfield

Circle Of Light
Trunk (UK), 1972. Near Mint-
A really unusual project from electronic music legend Delia Derbyshire – sounds that were created for a film of abstract photographic images, but which work beautifully here on their own! Liberty, Mid 60s. Sealed
One of the coolest records in the 60s surf/hotrod/motorcycle years of instrumental sets – an album that's partly sound effects from races, and partly instrumental music! There's no credits as to the players, but we're guessing it's the cream of the crop of LA studio musicians, of the sort ... LP, Vinyl record album

Further Adventures of Jimmy & Wes
Verve, 1966. Near Mint-
The second great session from two of Verve's biggest jazz stars of the 60s – organist Jimmy Smith and guitarist Wes Montgomery – an unlikely pair, to be sure, but one who work great together on the set! Laurindo Almeida & Ray Brown

Bach Ground – Blues & Greens
Century City, Late 60s. Near Mint-
An excellent session of bossa groovers with a slightly classical tinge, played by Ray Brown on bass and Laurindo Almeida on guitar. The set's got a similar feel to some of Ray's other groovy work from the time – like his remake of Jobim's score to the Adventurers. Includes the great groover ... LP, Vinyl record album

Max Roach

Jazz In 3/4 Time
EmArcy, 1957. Near Mint-
A great little album from Max Roach – one that has him finding a whole new voice in jazz! Clare Fischer Big Band

Thesaurus
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good
An unusual session from the great Clare Fischer – although probably his best-known record as well!
