❔
A lost set of modernist piano jazz from the British scene of the late 60s – very much in the mode of the best American work of the time by pianists like Steve Kuhn or Don Friedman! Taylor's got an incredible touch on the keys – a post-Bill Evans mode that uses space as much a sound, and which paints in broad colors and tones that seem to glisten in their own unique place in the musical spectrum. The sound is free, but never too "out" – and the trio performs a number of strong originals like "Just A Blues", "Two Autumns", "Guru", and "Abena" – plus completely transformed versions of "Stella By Starlight" and "All The Things You Are".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(180 gram Audio Clarity reissue, still sealed.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Miles Davis

Bitches Brew
Columbia, 1969. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark ... Freddie Hubbard

Super Blue
Columbia, 1978. Near Mint-
A sweet late 70s set from Freddie Hubbard – a slight move away from some of his highly-electric sides of the CTI years, yet one that still has some of the most soulful qualities of that work! Freddie's trumpet has a nicely spacious quality throughout – one that's flowing, and almost ... LP, Vinyl record album

A rare album as a leader from Teo Macero – one of the driving forces behind some of the key Miles Davis albums on Columbia Records – and other great jazz on that label too! Miles Davis

Miles Ahead
Columbia, 1957. Near Mint-
A masterful meeting of two 50s modern jazz talents – the trumpet of Miles Davis balanced with the arrangements of Gil Evans – with results that have made the album one of Miles' greatest ever! The sound here is completely sublime – as Davis gets all chromatic and spooky over ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kai Winding

Trombone Sound
Columbia, 1956. Very Good+
The trombone sound of Kai Winding is firmly in place – as he solos in the lead of a septet, with 4 extra trombones in the mix to give the record a nice bass-y sound! Arrangements are by a number of members of the band, and players include Wayne Andre, Carl Fontana, Jack Franklin, and Kenny O' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Sketches Of Spain
Columbia, 1960. Near Mint-
A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Early Byrd
Columbia, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Incredible work from the team of Donald Byrd and Gigi Gryce – crisp modern jazz, filled with soul, and never failing to swing! Way nicer than some of Milt's earlier work – and one of the gems he recorded with bassist Ray Brown during the late 60s. The group's got a tight soul jazz stepping groove – with Monty Alexander on piano, comping along right over Ray's warm basslines in a very tasty way. Teddy Edwards ... LP, Vinyl record album
