You may not know the name of James Royal, but you'll definitely be calling it out after hearing this sweet little set – a long-overdue collection that finally brings attention to his great British recordings in the 60s! James was one of those excellent UK singers from the 60s who could effortlessly pick up influences from American soul – part of a crowd before the years of bigger singers who'd take the style to a more global audience – and maybe more rooted in the deeper currents of R&B and soul. Yet Royal also gets great help here on many tracks from arranger Keith Mansfield – who you might know from his funky sound library material – and Mansfield brings in a very groovy, very mod approach that really makes things take off – adding sophistication that takes the sound past simple bluesy rock or gritty R&B – with wicked charts that mix strings, funky bits, and other cool touches – really elevating the James Royal sound.
