❔
A great 70s collection of earlier material from the great pianist Randy Weston – tracks that were all recorded for Riverside in the 50s, and culled from a number of different LPs and 10" releases! One LP in the set features the added bonus of Cecil Payne on baritone, but most of the material is spare trio material – in Randy's definite modern idiom – with titles that include "Little Niles", "Solemn Meditation", "Zulu", "Pam's Waltz", and "Lifetime".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear and a small trace of a price sticker.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Blue Moses
CTI, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
Beautiful work from Randy Weston – and a unique electric session from the 70s! The feel is very different here than the angular modernism of Randy's roots – a warmer, more flowing sound – as you'd expect from the CTI label, and from Randy's use of electric piano as well as ... Blue Note, 1958/1976. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Great Blue Note two-fer which compiles tracks from Randy Weston's fantastic albums recorded for United Aritsts – rare gems at the forefront of late 50s modern jazz, and records that hardly ever see the light of day! Milestone/Mobile Fidelity, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
Pretty darn nice stuff from McCoy Tyner, from a period when he was opening up to the soul jazz spiritualism that was around him – a movement that was clearly directly inspired by his work with Coltrane, but which also helped to shape his playing, and return the favor of influence. The group ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside/Milestone, 1962. Sealed 2LP Gatefold
Two great 60s albums from vibist Milt Jackson – both a bit unusual in format! On Big Bags, Jackson takes on a set of 10 standards (mostly) with some help from Tadd Dameron and Ernie Wilkins on larger group arrangements! Milt's the primary soloist, buoyed by an orchestra built around a ... LP, Vinyl record album

A nice set that brings together Hawk Flies High plus earlier material from 78s! The core record is a key album in the reintroduction of Coleman Hawkins in the late 50s – recorded in a style that still bears a lot of traces of earlier years, but at a time when Hawk was being claimed as a key ... 70's 2LP set that reissues some of the classic tenor material from Griff and Lockjaw recorded for the Jazzland label in the early 60's. One of the hippest albums we've ever heard from guitarist Jim Hall – a set of free-thinking, open-ended tracks that show him really expanding his horizons at the end of the 60s!
