❔

Seminal work from one of the 70s greatest groups! The band had always been great at love songs and uptempo numbers – but this record has them moving into more righteous area, picking up on some of the more socially conscious soul of their generation that had been working its way up the charts. The album features excellent production by Chi-Lite Eugene Record, who also wrote a lot of the material – plus arrangements by Tom Tom and Sonny Sanders. Great stuff all around, with the righteous social tunes "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to The People", "Trouble's A Comin", and "We Are Neighbors" – plus classic love songs "Have You Seen Her" and "Love Uprising", which are still kind of the band's strongest point. Loads more great stuff on this one, the album that helped the second wave of Chicago soul break out into the international market!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a small peeled spot on the front.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Chi-Lites

Half A Love
Brunswick, 1975. Near Mint-
Nothing half about The Chi-Lites at all – as the group were always tremendous during their famous run at Brunswick Records – able to come across perfectly on mellow ballads and more upbeat numbers! This set is a wonderful illustration of the really unique Chicago-based approach that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Brunswick, 1969. Sealed
One of The Artistics' most beautiful albums for Brunswick – and the one that includes the title song that was perhaps their greatest single! "I Want You To Make My Life Over" is a classic bit of Chicago soul – done at a level that really sums up all the sophisticated changes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Young-Holt Trio

Wack Wack
Brunswick, Mid 60s. Sealed
Amazing stuff from bassist Eldee Young and drummer Isaac "Red" Holt! At the time of this release, the pair had already risen to great fame as the rhythm backing for Ramsey Lewis in his first trio – but broke out on their own as a solo act, with a real focus on rhythmic piano ... Brunswick, 1972. Very Good+
A tremendous bit of Chicago soul – from a very unlikely source! Dana Valery's an Italian singer by birth, and spent some time on the London scene in the 60s – but she soars out here in the best sort of Windy City groove we've come to love from the Brunswick label – a sound and ... Ear Wax/Wonderland, Late 70s. Sealed
An obscure little funky group from Flint, Michigan, one with a tight ensemble sound that's very much in the Earth Wind & Fire mode – complete with a really great horn section, plenty of bass-heavy grooves a the bottom, and a relatively spiritual feel that comes through strongly on the ... Michael Jackson

Thriller
Epic, 1982. Very Good Gatefold
Arguably the last true moment of genius in Michael Jackson's career – a record that sold a bazillion copies around the world – and for plenty good reason! Prince

Purple Rain
Warner, 1984. Very Good-
One of the greatest crossover albums of the 80s – and the record that catapulted Prince very firmly into the mainstream! There's a tightness here that surpasses even that of Prince's early classics for Warner Brothers – an unabashed love of a pop hook that makes for some incredibly ... LP, Vinyl record album
Malaco, 1984. Sealed
Electro 80s grooving from southern funk act Freedom – a record that shows that even the Malaco scene could pick up on bass licks, synth drums, and other production techniques being used heavily up north at the time! However, given the strength of Freedom's overall sound, the album still ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ike & Tina Turner

Feel Good
United Artists, 1973. Sealed
Feel Good is a tight little set that shows Ike Turner sitting equally on the fence between funk and rock – sometimes kickin into the kind of tightly snapping rhythms heard on his best late 60s work, at other points strutting into more of a guitar-based groove that he was using for the ... Trammps

Mixin It Up
Atlantic, 1980. Very Good
One of the most dancefloor-oriented efforts from the Trammps – and that's saying a lot, given the sound of their other records! This set brings the beats up a bit more than before – almost a boogie groove, or an 80s-styled sound at points – but still with strong roots in the ... LP, Vinyl record album
