The title's taken from a song that parodies the role of female artists on the Cherry Red label at the start of the 80s – but the set's a wonderful answer to that tune, and a huge illustration of the big wave of female talent to arise during the UK post-punk years! UK girl singers never found much of a place during the early years of punk – but as the sounds changed after the first few years, and opened up to a much wider range of indie expression, the role of female singers and bands did too – and became a very important part of the post-punk explosion. This collection brings together some of the best of those years – with an especially strong focus on the overlooked acts from the deeper side of the indies – less commercial talents who for Cherry Red and a number of other indies – some of whom are finally making an overdue appearance on the reissue market! 2CD set features 45 tracks in all, with detailed notes that provide a strong historical context – and titles include "Hate The Girl" by The Marine Girls, "The Jam Jar Song" by Ingrid, "Teenage Kicks" by Dawn Chorus & The Blue Tits, "Launderette" by Vivien Goldman, "Normal" by The Petticoats, "Hearbeat" by The Twinsets, "Little Miss Rainbow" by The Candees, "194 Radio City" by Jaqui & Jeanette, "Jimmy's Grin" by Margox, "I Hate Being In Love" by Amy & The Angels, "A Splash Of Red" by Trixie's Big Red Motorbike, "I Want To Be With You" by Jane & Barton, and the aforementioned "Sharon Signs To Cherry Red" by The Kamikaze Pilots.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.
