Rinky-Dink

LP (Item 12263) Chess, 1962 — Condition: Very Good-

There's nothing Rinky Dink about this classic album from Dave Baby Cortez – as the set's heavy on Hammond organ grooves, and was definitely a key part of the instrument's introduction to soul music in the 60s! The style is rooted in jazz use of the Hammond, but served up with a tighter, less solo-based mode that's more soul instrumental overall – one that has Cortez really stepping out strongly on his instrument, with a range of modes that run from soulful stepping to some grittier, bluesier cuts that reflect the album's placement on the Chess label. Titles include the big hit "Rinky Dink" – plus "Jammin (parts 1 & 2)", "Wobble (parts 1 & 2)", "Skins & Sounds", "Mr. Gee", "Davy's Shuffle", "Lost Love", "Little Paris Melody", and "Getting Right".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue label pressing with deep groove.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

An excellent set of messed-up funky soul from Etta James – one of her killer early 70s sides for Chess! The album mixes together bluesy tracks and straight ahead soul – in a hip, bad-walking style that nicely updates Etta's older style for the 70s. The set includes a great funky cut ...
