Big City Sounds

LP (Item 12138) Argo, 1960 — Condition: Very Good
Massively soulful, massively stepping – and one of the greatest albums ever from the team of Art Farmer and Benny Golson! The record sparkles with an amazing edge – rhythm totally in place from the trio of Cedar Walton, Tommy Williams, and Albert Heath – and horns braced over the top with a clean-blown sound that's as impeccable as it is soulful! Farmer, Golson, and trombonist Tom McIntosh update the soulfully arranged style that Golson first forged in the 50s – taking it into earthier territory with more of a soul jazz flair, but still allowing for the space and modern edge that made Golson's work noticeable from the start. The album features some great originals, and key takes on jazz standards from the time – an all-great run of titles that includes "The Cool One", "Blues On Down", "Hi Fly", "Bean Bag", and "Con Alma".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Here & Now (one-sided test pressing – Side B)
Mercury, 1962. Near Mint-
One of the most magical records ever from this legendary group – a set that swings as hard and soulfully as some of their previous sessions, yet also has a sharper, more modern vibe as well! Of course, this latter aspect is no surprise – once you realize that a young Grachan Moncur is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Farmer & Benny Golson Jazztet

Back To The City
Contemporary, 1986. Very Good+
A tremendous comeback for the Art Farmer/Benny Golson Jazztet – recording here in the mid 80s with original members Farmer, Golson, and Curtis Fuller – plus tremendous rhythm support from the trio of Mickey Tucker, Ray Drummon, and Marvin Smitty Smith! The session has less of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Stitt & Bennie Green

My Main Man
Argo, 1964. Very Good+
A lost little cooker from Stitt and Green – recorded at a time when they were working together briefly, with backing by a Chicago organ trio that includes Bobby Buster on Hammond, Jo Diorio on guitar, and Dorel Anderson on drums. Tracks are short and fierce, but it's clear that Stitt can ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1964. Very Good
A killer live set from Ramsey Lewis and his classic early 60s trio – a record that's not nearly as well known as The In Crowd, but every bit as great! Drummer Red Holt and bassist Eldee Young really get in some great elements here – working with Ramsey's piano in a groove that's far ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Farmer

Perception
Argo, 1961. Very Good+
An amazingly beautiful set of tracks from Art Farmer – playing here with superb accompaniment from a young Harold Mabern on piano, in a laidback quartet format that really lets Art open up! Argo, 1961. Very Good-
A record with a gimmick – but one that's totally great, and really unique for the time! The "1 to 10" in the title is the way that the album spins out – as track 1 features Golson blowing solo tenor, track 2 features him in duet, track 3 a trio – and so on, until track ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Stitt

Sonny Stitt
Argo, 1958. Near Mint-
A record with a simple, elegant title – and a similar cover image too – but if you know Sonny Stitt, you know there's often plenty beneath the surface, and this classic Chess Records has plenty to offer, once you start listening! The album's right up there with Sonny's work for Roost ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1955. Very Good-
Beautiful work from Jamal's early Chicago years – and a perfectly titled set that really gets at the differences he made in modern jazz! The tunes are wonderfully fluid, soulful, and swinging – but not in the gutbuckety style of other trios of the time, more in a lightly modern style ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1961. Very Good
In case you think the folks at Chess were putting too fine a point on the earthy origins of Ramsey's jazz, the title's actually one that follows from an earlier album Ramsey cut for Mercury – and features a similar cover of a shovel digging in the dirt! The tracks are a great blend of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1962. Near Mint-
Stunning live work from piano genius Ahmad Jamal – still very young at this point, but already working with the fluid sense of imagination that would only unfold even more in the 60s!
