Ebo TaylorLife Stories – Highlife & Afrobeat Classics 1973 to 1980 ... LP
Strut (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
Great Ghana grooves from Ebo Taylor – a tremendous collection of his funkiest 70s work – and a much-needed reintroduction of his talents to the world at large! Much of the music here has strong links with more familiar Afro Funk – but the overall approach is often a bit unique, too – lots more guitar in the rhythms at times, in ways that echo the lighter lyricism of highlife, yet all without losing the commitment to bottom sounds that made 70s changes in African music so great! The package does a great job of archaeology – bringing together not just cuts recorded under Taylor's own name, but also work with other groups too – all in a set that offers plenty in the way of notes and historical details, too. 2LP set features 12 titles that include "Heaven", "Aba Yaa", "Atwer Abroba", and "Peace On Earth" by Ebo Taylor, "Tamfo Nyi Akyir" by Apagya Showband, "Ohiani Sua Efir" by Asasse Ase, "Ene Nyame Nam A Mensuor" by Pat Thomas & Ebo Taylor, "Egya Edu" by Ebo Taylor & The Pelikans, and "Love & Death" by Ebo Taylor & Uhuru Yenzu. VariousNigeria Soul Fever – Afro Funk, Disco, & Boogie – West African Disco Mayem (3LP set – with download) ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $29.99 31.99
The Nigerian groove of the 70s – way past the familiar modes of Fela Kuti, and served up here in a range of artists who followed on a huge second wave of soul that soared from Lagos and beyond in the second half of the decade! The music here opens up in a sweet range of different styles – including bits of club and boogie that have come into the scene to open up Nigerian funk in more global modes for the dancefloor – blending African roots with American currents, in a sound that's completely unique – and which is way better than some of the Afro-disco modes that were coming from Europe a the time! As usual with the folks at Soul Jazz, the set's an ear-opening work of genius – from the superb track selection, to the very thorough notes and research – which really do a great job of presenting this side of Nigerian funk that's always been a bit eclipsed by some of the bigger names on the scene. Liner notes are by dancefloor historian Bill Brewster – and titles include "Do The Funkro" by Joni Haastrup, "You Can't Change A Man" by Christy Essien, "Afrikana Disco" by Akin Richards & The Executives, "Ocheche" by Don Bruce & The Anges, "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" by Tee Mac, "Get Up & Dance" by Benis Cletin, "Enoviyin" by Colomach, "Nwaeze" by Jimmy Sherry & The Musik Agents, "Wake Up Your Mind" by Joni Haastrup, "Disco Dancing" by Angela Starr, "Mr Been To" by Arakatula, "Living Every Day" by Tee Mac with Marjorie Barnes, "Wake Up Africa" by Arakatula, and "Soul Fever" by Benis Cletin. ✨✧ VariousThai? Dai! – The Heavier Sound Of The Luk Thung Underground ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest collections of underground Thai rock we've seen – and it certainly is The Heavier Sound Of the Luk Thung Underground – including a uniquely Thai vision flavored with a Black Sabbath riff, psych makeovers of Thai folklore, and a bunch great tunes that meld Bangkok life with western garage and psychedelia masterfully! All of the tunes are heavy in their own way, but it's by no means heavy in a simple hard rock way – loads of impassioned vocals, astounding percussion, tripped out guitar and other strings and woozy organ keep the arrangements exciting, and the otherworldly aspects play nice with accessible melodies. Titles include "Kuen Kuen Lueng Leung" (the aforementioned heady take on Sabbath's "Iron Man"), "Ruk Kun Samong" by Plearn Promdan, "Pai Joi" by Rung Petchburi, "Nam Mun Pang" by Sroeng Santi, "Dub Fai Kui Gun" by Sroeng Santi and more. 14 massive slabs of heavy Thai psych in all! ✨✧ VariousWelcome To Zamrock – How Zambia's Liberation Led To A Rock Revolution 1972 to 1977 (with bonus download) ... LP
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds for fans of funk and rock alike – music from the freaky, fuzzy 70s scene in Zambia – a place where styles effortlessly criss-crossed to really produce something new and unique! The work here is often heavy on fuzz guitars, but also has some wickedly soulful basslines and drums – so that although the tunes can be psych-styled, they're also pretty darn funky too – often at a level that's a bit like the Nigerian Afro Funk of the time, but much grittier and more righteous! The quality of the music and scene is explored in depth in the package – which includes a very detailed booklet of notes and photos – all to support the selection of music, which may well be the hippest so far from the Now Again label – and that's really saying a lot, if you know their other titles! Tracks include "Funky Lady" by Teddy Chisi, "Fast" by Salty Dog, "Rain & Sunshine" by Crossbones, "I Don't Know" by Born Free, "Fwe Bena Zambia" by Five Revolutions, "Who's That Guy" by Ricky Banda, "Changa Namwele" by Machine Gunners, "Poverty" by Cosmos Zani, "Dzikolino Ni Zambia" by Keith Mlevhu, "Running" by Blackfoot, and "Everyday Has Got A New Dream" by Dr Footswitch. Laurie Anderson & Kronos QuartetLandfall ... LP
Nonesuch, 2018. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 29.98
A beautiful collaboration between two of the most important forces in leftfield music in the early 80s – multi-media artist Laurie Anderson and modern string legends Kronos Quartet – coming together here in an extended Anderson composition inspired by the experience of Hurricane Sandy! It's been years since we've last heard from Laurie, and she's really returned to her roots here – still using her voice a bit, but also playing violin a fair bit too, along with keyboards, samples, percussion, and lots of her unusual filters and other electronic elements. Most selections are sort, and work together beautifully – almost in territory that might be described as a string quartet take on the modes of United States. Titles include "All The Extinct Animals", "Built You A Mountain", "Darkness Falls", "Dreams Translated", "The Water Rises", "Our Street Is A Black River", "Nothing Left But Their Names", "Thunder Continues In The Aftermath", "Old Motors & Helicopters", and "Everything Is Floating". Antorcha (aka Las Antorchas)Antorcha (plus poster) ... LP
Vam (Mexico), 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99
A great mid 70s record by Antorcha – whose late 60s records as Las Antorchas were a great mix of styles – from beat, to garage, mod and psych – and by this point in the mid 70s, shortened their name and honed their groove into heavier, moodier style that's even better! Heavy rhythms and moody textures – with some really haunting organ grooves – and an overall vibe that's up there with some of greater underground rock around the world at the time. By this point, the band was producing and promoting themselves – and put up a number of EPs that are compiled here for this great 11 song set: with "En El Jardin Del Eden", the English-sung "Grass" and "Going Down", "La Tierra", "Crisalida", "Bracero", "Mira", Quiero Vivir" and more. Aqueduct EnsembleImprovisations On An Apricot ... LP
Last Resort (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $19.99
Aqueduct Ensemble is more of a duo than the large group you'd expect from their name – but they manage to serve up some very spacious sounds over the course of these improvised tracks! The core of the group features Stu on piano and Kit on woodwinds and electronics – acoustic elements that are often layered a bit, with currents that move far from jazz into more lyrical soundscapes – maybe somewhere in that world after the ECM experiments of the 70s, when instrumental groups from a variety of different scenes were making subtle, beautiful records like this! We might put this material somewhere in the sonic territory of Durutti Column, Penquin Cafe Orchestra, or any number of records from the Benelux scene – but there's also a more pastoral quality to the album that really gives it a special vibe. Titles include "Potter's View North", "Borrowed Sax Test", "Cut Grass 1 to 3", "In Perfect Air", and "To Close Without Saving". LP, Vinyl record album

Ray BarrettoHead Sounds ... LP
Fania, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
"Head Sounds" is a heck of a great way to describe this album – as it's filled with some of Ray's most mind-expanding cuts! The album kicks off with the tune "Acid", which you probably know from the album of the same name, but which still really does a great job of setting the pace here – and then it rolls into some fantastic longer cuts that really have a very strong jazz component. Ray and the group stretch out tremendously, hitting off-color notes and tones that almost make the record feel like one of Eddie Palmieri's jammers from the same time. 3 tracks on the set are over 8 minutes long, which should give you a good feel of the openness of the work – and titles include "Abidjan", "Espiritu Libre", "Drum Poem", and "Tin Tin Deo". Czeslaw BartkowskiDrums Dream ... LP
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
A drum-heavy set from Polish percussionist Czeslaw Bartkowski – mostly solo on most tracks, but with occasional accompaniment on trumpet, electric piano, and soprano sax on a few of the fuller numbers – plus some great funky big band arrangements at the end! The sound is often spare and moody, but also melodic – similar to some of Max Roach's solo percussion efforts – in that Bartkowski isn't too concerned with going too far out, or getting too free – just working drums and percussion within new modes in jazz! The last few tracks on the album flesh out the sound with fuller orchestrations from Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski – in a way that's almost funky at times – and other players on the record include Tomasz Szukalski, Tomasz Stanko, and Adam Makowicz. Titles include "Drums Dream", "FAO", "Druga Swobodna Etiuda", "Rozmowa Ze Sliwka Bez Pestek", "Good Times Bad Times", and "Lullaby For Tiny Chinamen". LP, Vinyl record album

Bernard Baschet/Michel Deneuve/Alain Dumont4 Espaces Sonores ... LP
Transversales Disques (France), 1979. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99
A very cool entry in the underground legacy of 70s sound sculpture recordings – that is, recordings that were made based around the sounds created by specific objects designed to make noise! In Chicago, we had Harry Bertoia, whose creations were often designed to interact with organic forces – but the Baschet brothers in France had a more dynamic approach – one that almost had them creating these sculptures that were like Harry Partch instruments, but played in a more indirect way! The title here – four sound spaces – should give you a good idea of the vibe of the record – as there's often as much space around the sounds as the sounds themselves – with each performance utilizing the sculptures as a way to sonically explore the space in which they reside. Titles include "Resurgence", "Errance", "Iranon", and "Polykinese". LP, Vinyl record album

Superior Viaduct, 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $23.99
A really full-on early set from Franco Battiato – a set that's maybe halfway between some of his more avant compositions and some of the modes of the Italian prog scene at the time! The album's a concept one, based on the growing pollution of the planet – in a mode that's maybe similar to Earth Rot, by David Axelrod – and like that set, Battiato mixes together unusual sounds and ideas with some more straightforward rockish passages. Battiato works with a small group of musicians – and while guitar steps to the lead at some points, others very much more abstract sounds and forms. BB Boogie (Daz I Kue)Standing On The Wall ... LP
R2 (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
It's been many years since Daz I Kue first rocked our world with his grooves in Bugz In The Attic – and since that time, he's only gotten stronger and more soulful as a solo act – to the point where a new project like this almost blows away some of his previous work! As you might guess from the cover and name, the project has a very vintage feel – somewhere in the territory of late 70s/early 80s clubby funk, with warmer instrumentation than back in the Bugz days – and a fantastic sense of production that could almost have you playing this set alongside later Funkadelic material, or early work from Prince! Yet there's also a sharpness, too – that new vision of funk that's always made the London scene so wonderful – from the Incognito/Brand New Heavies years onward. Khari Simmons plays bass on most of the record – and the bass is definitely in the lead – and singers include Vanessa Freeman, Greg Blackman, Leroy Burgess, DNS, Monica Blaire, Joy Jones, and others – really helping flesh out the sound on tracks that include "Opposition", "Sweating & Shaking", "Wanna Be With You", "We Can Do It", "Standing On The Wall", "In The Middle", "Let Love Grow", "Stay Woke", and "RAyanne". Jorge BenTabua De Esmeralda ... LP
Philips/Elemental (Spain), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... About June 20, 2018
Searing samba soul from Jorge Ben – one of his best-remembered albums of the 70s, and for good reason too! The album's got a slightly fuller feel than some of Ben's other work of the time – never slick, but with backings balanced nicely against his own raspy vocals and acoustic guitar – sweetening things up with a bit of the strings you'd find on Forca Bruta, but with a hint of the soul to come on Africa Brasil! The balance is great – thanks to arrangers Osmar Milito, Darcy De Paulo, and Hugo Bellard – and as usual, Jorge's vocals are the main attraction – dipping, turning, and rising with this really unique, personal feel – Ben-like brilliance at its brightest. The whole thing's wonderful – a key gem from the Philips years – and titles include "Cinco Minutos", "Zumbi", "Brother", "Os Alquimistas Estao Chegando Os Alquimistas", "Errare Humanum Est", "Menina Muler Da Pele Preta", "Hermes Tri", and "O Namorado Da Viuva". Paul BleyImprovisie ... LP
America/Bamboo (France), 1972. New Copy ... $23.99
Incredible work from Paul Bley – and a record that captures him in his excellent electric period, working in a different setting than we've heard him elsewhere! The group on the set is a trio – one that matches Bley's work on electric piano and synthesizer with percussion from Han Bennink and vocals, piano, bass, and additional synthesizer from a young Annette Peacock! Peacock is especially restrained on the record – especially if you only know her later, straighter work – and her contribution here is wonderfully subtle and extremely lovely. Side one features the track "Improvisie", a free improvisation with Bley on electric piano and synthesizer – and tonalities are as "out" as the playing, which is generally quite spacious and dynamic – though hardly quiet. The second side features a Peacock tune titled "Touching" that's a bit more intense – very much in the spirit of the work on the first side, and a unique slice of magic from this one-off session! Bob & GeneIf This World Were Mine (with bonus tracks & download) ... LP
Modo/Daptone, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 18.99
A previously-unreleased sweet soul treasure – now finally getting its due! Bob & Gene were an obscure duo from Buffalo at the end of the 60s – recording briefly together under the guidance of Bob's father, who recorded the young pair in his home studio with the help of some great funk and soul musicians from the local scene – with a sound that's fresh, fragile, and deeply personal. Many numbers have a slow, sad quality that's right up there with some of the best harmony soul of the time – a wispy late nite kind of sound that's captured perfectly here, with just the right balance of roughness and sweet. Other numbers get a bit more upbeat, and almost a bit funky – showing the pair to have a bit more punch than some of their contemporaries, and a sometimes sunny sound that really sparkles amidst the darkness. Most of the work here was recorded in the late 60s, but never released – making this the first-ever album by the group. And as a bonus note of trivia, Bob here is none other than Bobby Nunn – who went onto record under his own name, and did a lot of great work in the LA scene of the 70s! Titles include "Gotta Find A Way", "Your Name", "It Won't Go", "I Can Be Cool", "Sailboat", "Interlude", "Which Love", "Don't Leave Me Girl", "You Gave Me Love", and a great cover of "If This World Were Mine". Braen & Raskovich (Alessandro Alessandroni/GiulianDrammatico (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Panda/Sonor (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
They're not kidding with the title of this one – as the album leaps off to a very dramatic style, right from the start – with a surprisingly noisy sound titled after the incubation of the heavens! That noise moves aside a bit as the album moves on, but the whole thing still stays very strongly in the fuzzy, freaky territory you might know from other Italian rarities issued under the name of Braen and Raskovich – which were both studio pseudonyms for Alessandro Alessandroni and Giuliano Sorgini! Yet despite the fame of both of those artists in other settings, they're very much in a different space here – not just psych-inspired sound library modes, but also pre-industrial sounds too – of a style that seems to hint at the darker depths of the British underground in the post-punk years. At times, if we told you the album was a project by Throbbing Gristle, you wouldn't be surprised – and like TG, there's some surprisingly tuneful points amidst the noisier moments. Titles include "Dispersi", "Accerchiamento", "Linea Di Resistenza", "Insidia", "Ultimo Istante", and "Avanzata". LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe the coolest and grooviest music we've heard from the obscure Braen's Machine sound library project from early 70s Italy – a record that's less tripped out than its predecessors, and instead has this great style that's heavy on bossa elements and funky jazz! The vibe's a bit like the best Italian soundtracks of the period – especially work by Morricone or Trovajoli – and the group still apparently features contributions from Alessandro Alessandroni, working with Piero Umiliani – which gives the whole thing a very strong soundtrack pedigree! Instrumentation includes some mighty nice keyboards – both Hammond and electric piano – and lots of great production on familiar instruments, which can give things like a snare drum a very odd crackle, or a flute this weirdly spacious sound. Dubb Everlasting is a record that might mis-spell the name of its genre, but it's also a set that strips things right down to the core, then adds a very unique touch! Errol Brown works here in the Treasure Isle studios with massive rhythms from The Revolutionaries – but in a session that also includes a mysterious harmonica player too – who uses the instrument to carve out unusual riffs that are sometimes jazz, sometimes bluesy – almost making it feel like War's Lee Oskar is sitting in for a session down in Kingston! Daptone, 2010. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The Daptone House Of Soul blueprint is a big part of the recipe, as it should be. Classic funky soul grit holds it all together and each cut has an unshakable groove, but with that in full effect, the group is free to explore. The Budos horns are as impeccable and communicative as ever, with brass that ranges from classic stateside funk and Afro influences. The percussion (bongos, clave, cowbell and more) is just as broadly thought out and tightly delivered, snakey bass lines, flute and the sometimes secret weapon on Budos Band III, the electric organ – which brings a bit of a garage psych/funk rock vibe. Truly exceptional work from the one of the best bands of their generation! Includes "Rite Of The Ancients", "Black Venom", "River Serpentine", "Unbroken, Unshaven", "Nature's Wrath", "Golden Dune's", "Budo's Dirge", "Raja Haje", "Crimson Skies", "Mark Of The Unnamed" and "Reppirt Yad" (a funked up Lennon/McCartney cover...read it backwards, kids). These guys use some elements from fusion – including guitar and Fender Rhodes – but they also stretch their sound out more in a way that seems inspired by avant spiritual jazz from the US – almost a post-Coltrane vibe that's different from the modern jazz territory explored by other Polish groups in years before! Cosmic/Now Again, 1974. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $49.99 55.98
An amazing package – a pair of rare avant jazz albums, presented here together! The first album is Peace In The World – maybe the only album issued under the name of Michael Cosmic – but a set that's part of a key legacy with his brother, reedman Phill Musra! The set has Cosmic in very heady territory – sounds that come from his young tenure in the AACM, his brief time with Cecil Taylor, and his budding reputation on the 70s Boston scene – where the set was recorded, and almost stands as a precursor to the rich legacy of improvisational jazz that would emerge on the New England scene for decades to come! Tracks are long and very free, but have spiritual currents too – and Cosmic is mostly on piano, with Musra on soprano sax and tenor, Leonard Brown on soprano and tenor, John Jamyll Jones on bass, Huseyin Ertunc on drums, and Eric Jackson on percussion. Titles include "We Love You Malcolm X", "Peace In The World", "Sapce On Space", and "Arabia". Next is the related album Creator Spaces, by Phill Musra – recorded at the time when he was part of the very underground Boston avant scene – a world that had a slightly different vibe than music coming from Chicago, Detroit, or New York! The album's got a spiritual avant bent – soulful at the core, with lots of references to outer space as well – and an approach that feels a lot like a classic Saturn Records session by Sun Ra, both in sound and spirit! Musra plays reeds, chimes, and percussion – and the group features some incredible sax work by Michael Cosmic, who also plays a bit of organ, again in a tripped-out, Ra-type way. Huseyin Ertunc plays percussion – very free and loose, in ways that are a great balance to the more angular lines of the reeds – and tracks include "The Creator Is So Far Out", "The Creator Spaces", "Egypt", and "Arabia". One of the hippest sets ever issued during the roots reggae wave of the 70s – and one of the most spiritual, too! The album's got a very special acoustic vibe at the core – earthy drumming that goes back to a pan-African tradition, these beautiful acoustic basslines that link the music strongly with underground jazz, and even some wicked sax and reed passages that make that link even stronger – especially when tied to the more message-oriented lyrics of the vocals! The album's hardly a straight roots album – and instead goes deep into the more spiritual side of Rastafari, with a personal, acoustic style that's instantly captivating – and which also has strong appeal to fans of other global sounds, and 70s spiritual jazz as well. A stunning classic – with tracks that include "Lock Stock & Barrel", "Selam Nna Wadada", "Tales Of Mozambique", "Let Freedom Reign", "Nigerian Reggae" and "Run One Mile". Maybe the greatest moment ever from Country Joe & The Fish – an insane blend of politics, psychedelia, rock roots, and more – all wrapped up in a nice of carnival-esque style that really lives up to the group's name! Many folks later copied the group – and others, like The Fugs, worked in somewhat similar territory – yet there's a really special sound to the group on this early set, a balance that brings more focus to otherwise trippy moments, more sense to their political agenda, and these sharp instrumental inflections that really send the whole thing home. Blues historian Samuel Charters produced, giving the record another influential quality – and titles include "The Fish Cheer & I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die-Rag", "Who Am I", "Pat's Song", "Magoo", "Jam", "Eastern Song", and "Colors For Susan". For one thing, the group took their name from a Terry Riley tune – already showing their higher consciousness when it came to music – and the lineup also features a young Francis Monkman and Darry Way – the former an artist who'd soon do some great sound library and soundtrack work on the UK scene, the latter a violinist who'd continue to find new spaces for his instrument in years to come! The use of Way's violin is a great addition to the sound here – as he carves out these lean lines next to the more flowing vocals of singer Sonja Kristina – who's got a style that's almost a proggish adaptation of folk modes from a few years before – while the rest of the group comes in with the more expected guitar, keyboards, and drums – but almost always at a level that remains fresh and distinct. Titles include "Hide & Seek", "It Happened Today", "Stretch", "Screw", "Blind Man", "Vivaldi", and "Situations". LP, Vinyl record album

Dharma QuintetArchipel ... LP
Souffle Continu (France), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99
Dharma are taking on a different approach here – dropping the Quintet from their name, even though they're still a five piece – and working on a number of shorter tracks that are in contrast to the longer improvisations on previous albums! Yet despite the change, there's still a mindblowingly creative sound to the group – especially when on the shorter tracks, they still manage to explode with new styles and instrumental moments that must have left them breathless as they were spontaneously creating the record in the studio! The lineup features electric piano and percussion from Patricio Villarroel, saxes from Jean Francois Sicard, guitar from Gerard Marais, bass from Michel Gladieux, and drums from Jacques Rondreux – on titles that include "Octopus", "Koan", "Hauts Plateaux De La Thierach", "La Ballade Du Borgne", "Sylvacane", "Mara", and "Histoire Sans Paroles". Profile/Legacy, 1991. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 20.98
DJ Quik's classic debut – arguably one sturdiest records bridging the first wave of the LA gangsta rap era to the G Funk era of the early-to-mid 90s – and definitely one of the tighter and most focused albums of its kind around that time, when rap records were getting largely getting a little too padded with skits and filler. This one's lean and mean and really earns it's slow-building critical legacy. Dezron DouglasSoul Jazz (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Venus (Japan), 2018. New Copy ... $52.99
Bassist Dezron Douglas is always a name we look for on a record – and although this set is one of the few he's ever given us as a leader, his playing and approach never let us down! For the set, Douglas revisits a number of older soul tracks, but in a way that's completely instrumental – much more complicated than the 60s soul jazz modes you might expect from title, with a wonderfully changing sense of rhythm and flow that's abetted by work from Donald Brown on piano and Willie Jones III on drums – both working at a level that matches their own great records as leaders. Saxophonist Jimmy Greene blows both tenor and soprano sax on the album – adding an important voice over the top – and titles include "I Want You", "Tears Of A Clown", "Cupid", "Ooh Baby Baby", and "So Amazing". Gianni FerrioIo Emmanuelle (180 gram pressing) ... LP
CAM/Four Flies (Italy), 1969. New Copy ... $29.99
A really beautiful little soundtrack – and one that's quite different than all of the other late 70s scores that circulated under the Emmanuelle name! This film came out years before that big cycle of sexploitation movies – and also was not part of that series at all – and while the soundtrack certainly has some of the erotics you might expect, there's also a richer, more dynamic sonic range in place – right up there with some of the most explosive moments of genius from Gianni Ferrio at the end of the 60s! Each tune seems to have a slightly different vibe – some thoughtful, some dark and brooding, and some sweetly light – often with piano or organ, but also sometimes using a voice or chorus – but in ways that are again different than the usual, especially the more familiar Morricone/Dell'Orso style. There's a fragile sense of beauty that you'd never get in the later Emmanuelle scores – and titles include "Osmosi", "Analisi", "Contestazione", "Micropsichia", "Caos", and "Ricerca". Mental Experience (Spain), New Copy (reissue)... About August 6, 2018
Wonderfully free-wheeling sounds from this hip German trio – maybe not one of the biggest groups of the Krautrock generation, but one who definitely earn their name with the music on this album! The set's got a long-spun approach to the tunes, which are all quite long – layers of keyboards that include Fender Rhodes, minimoog, Hammond organ, "Lunatron", and other electronics – mixed with some slight effects, and no other instrumentation at all – which makes for a very evocative, all-instrumental blend of keyboard sounds and styles – as they spin out beautifully in ways that really build a bridge to the sky! Ghana Soul ExplosionSoul Makossa ... LP
Pickwick, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
An obscure album of soulful groovers – one of the odder albums of its type from the time! Given that the record was recorded for Pickwick, the Ghana Soul Explosion were most likely a group of studio players, trussed up in fake Afro garb to look like the real thing – except there's no pictures of the band in sight, though you get what we mean. The overall sound of the album's more in a straight 70s funk mode than you'd think from the name – but still, the record's a nice batch of funky soul covers, including "Superstition", "Soul Makossa", "Superfly TNT", "Family Affair", and "Are You Man Enough". There's nothing humdrum about Gogo Penguin at all – as the combo are out to take the sound of the piano trio into their own great directions – really bursting forth here with a sense of energy and imagination that even blow away their previous records! The group is simultaneously concerned with the wider sound of the piano – which occasionally hits waves of sound that almost feel lifted from the post-classical scene, but a lot more dynamic – while the bass and the drums really amplify their role when called up, so that the proceedings are always thrusting forward boldly – in ways that almost remind us of the excellent Indigo Jam Unit from Japan. Jari Haapalainen TrioFusion Nation ... LP
Moserobie (Sweden), 2017. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99
The Jari Haapalainen Trio has been making some really amazing music over the past few years – always on albums that have the word "fusion" in the name, but which sound completely different than any familiar fusion jazz you might know! Instead, the groove here is much more in the creative jazz spectrum we know from the Moserobie label – not free jazz or completely outside material, but instead music that pushes the boundaries while also finding its own sense of structure – balanced beautifully between the drums of Jari, the electric bass of Daniel Bingert, and the mighty tenor sax of Per Texas Johanssen! The tunes are chunky, but not in a funky way – and the boldness of the electric bass rumbles at the bottom while Haapalainen snaps a nice core on the drums, and Johanssen really takes off on his solos. Panduranga HendersonOcean Of Love (2017 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Luaka Bop, Early 80s. New Copy (reissue)... $7.99 19.99
Incredibly unique work from Panduranga Henderson – an artist who first worked as John Henderson in the group of Ray Charles, then hooked up with Alice Coltrane and had a spiritual awakening that really shaped his sound! The music here isn't at all like Charles or Coltrane – although it's informed by the same spirit as the latter – as Panduranga draws on lots of elements from Eastern thought to create the lyrics of these long songs of praise – tunes that often have currents of electro soul in the instrumentation, but which flow out in ways that have the longer-form quality you'd find in Indian vocal music. The mix is completely unique – and is surprisingly powerful, despite a relatively simple production approach. Hidden OrchestraDawn Chorus (with bonus download) ... LP
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 21.99
A record with a sound to match its evocative title – maybe the most heady work to date from Hidden Orchestra – and that's saying a lot, given the depth of their other releases! These guys definitely take the "orchestra" in their name seriously – and while the lineup is maybe around a dozen musicians, not a hundred, the sound is very complex, and made up of a shifting array of musical elements – including piano, percussion, guitar, and lots more from leader Joe Acheson – who also uses field recordings and other sonic elements alongside the group's subtle blend of woodwinds, trumpet, and bits of strings. The latter are used very sparingly – so that most of the textures have a more organic sort of quality – and although there are lyrics, the overall sound is the most important thing – almost a 21st Century underground updating of older British lyrical landscape composition – but much hipper overall. Titles include "Long Orchard", "Wingbeats", "East London Street", "Stone", "Serpentine", and "Western Isles". LP, Vinyl record album

Motema, 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $25.99
A group who take their name from the Hudson River Valley – beautifully pictured here on the front cover – and a quartet who work in an equally expansive array of sounds – all sharp elements of tone and timing from a lineup that features Jack DeJohnette on drums, John Scofield on guitar, Larry Grenadier on bass, and John Medeski on piano, Fender Rhodes, and Hammond! The Hudson influence doesn't just stop at the name, though – because all these upstate New York musicians often pay tribute to other artists who left the city for points north – Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, and The Band – each of whom gets a tribute track on the album. About half the set is originals by members of the group – and if we had to pick one instrument that seems to have the strongest voice in the group, it might be the guitar of Scofield – maybe in part because he can skirt the two different worlds so well. Titles include "Tony Then Jack", "Dirty Ground", "El Swing", "Hudson", "Lay Lady Lay", "Woodstock", "Wait Until Tomorrow", and "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall". LP, Vinyl record album

A pastiche of of styles from the late 70s and early 80s Kollywood cinema scene – amazing stuff produced and arranged by Ilaiyaraaja – music that trades as much in heavy funk as it does electronic pop! Over the span of a few decades, maestro Ilaiyaraaja recorded hundreds of scores, many under different names (or differently spelled names) in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada – Southern Indian music as relentlessly danceable as boundlessly groovy as we could have imagined. We also can't imagine how arduous the task must have been for compilers Doug Shipton and Pavel Chehunov to go through such a vast catalog to put together this essential compilation, which just makes it all the more amazing! Folk soul guitar player, singer, songwriter, storyteller and genuine character Abner Jay's brilliant home recordings – the first release of his "terrible comedy blues" in far too long – courtesy of the always deep digging Mississippi label! Abner takes on the topical issues of the days with a skewed sensibility that's brilliant, and his singing, the performances and the recording quality aren't really as rough and raw as you might expect, though nowhere even close to manicured and clean sound – it's just right really for the material. Damn! The MASSIVE collaborative album from the dynamic duo of Madlib and J Dilla! Essentially, Madlib handles the production on the even numbers in the set with Dilla on the vocals, and the roles are reversed on the odd numbers. Each producer does his own thing, as only he can do it – Madlib brings the funky sampler genius – and Dilla rocks the thumping Detroit hip hop soul crunch. A number of guest rhymers step to the mic, including Talib Kweli, Percee P, Frank-N-Dank & Guilty Simpson, and the flow is seamless. Not only was this one of the best hip hop albums of '03, it also has a dyed-in-the-wool classic production style, and it sounds just as great a few years later! So very highly recommended! Tracks include "L.A. Jazz Rock ExperienceLet Yourself Go ... LP
Sonorama (Germany), 1969/1970. New Copy ... $24.99
Fantastic work from a group who are way more than just the sum of their name! The combo is definitely jazz, only a bit rock, and really provide a funky experience on most of their numbers – in the same sort of wicked blend of acoustic and electric jazz elements that you'd find on MPS Records at the start of the 70s! The musicians here are Swiss, but come from the same mindset as that famous German label – and like some of their contemporaries across the European scene, they were young players who were really open to new ideas – which they let flow from their fingers over the course of these cool long tracks! The lineup shifts a bit over the course of these recordings, and there's some real surprises in the roster of musicians –w ith players who include Bruno Spoerri on electric tenor and sopranino sax, Dave Lee on vibes, Hans Kennel on trumpet, Christy Doran on guitar, Freddy Meier on tenor, Kenny Schmidt on drums, Hans Foletti on bass, and even a young Irene Schweizer on electric piano. Titles include "If It Wasn't For Dicky", "Krivo Sadovsko Choro", "The Starter", "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child", "Cheyenne", "Blues No Blues", and a version of the James Brown tune "Let Yourself Go". One of the greatest soundtracks of the blacksploitation era – served up with some incredible grooves from maestro JJ Johnson! The album's got a non-stop, hard-hitting groove that ranks it with the best of its time – and which is arguably even better, because most of the record isn't nearly as well known as Shaft, Superfly, or other classics. Martha Reeves sings some of the deepest vocals of her career on the great title track "Willie D" – an old sample cut that you're sure to recognize – and the instrumental tunes are even better, filled with great percussion and jazzy flourishes from JJ – in a style that really keeps things interesting! Luaka Bop, 2018. New Copy ... $19.99 20.99
We admire the hell out of Kassin, but it's hard to imagine that we'd relax when faced with a new record of his – as we always pay fervent attention to everything he ever does! And this time around, that attention is rewarded even more than usual – as the musician and studio genius emerges a bit more from the background than usual – finally putting his face on the cover (sort of!), and really showing off his talents as both a singer and songwriter! Yet as with all of Kassin's other work – including his famous collaborations with Domenico and Moreno Veloso, his time in Orquesta Imperial, and his projects with bigger names in Brazilian music – there's always this understated quality that makes the whole thing even more charming than if Kassin was overstating his talents. Kassin is one of the few contemporary Brazilian artists to really live up to the genius of the golden years that gave us talents like Marcos Valle, Edu Lobo, or Caetano Veloso – and his sense of songwriting, presentation, and overall structure here is wonderful – making the album an instant classic in Brazilian music. Astral Spirits, 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $22.99 25.00
A mighty debut from Quin Kirchner – a drummer who's poised to become a key figure on the Chicago scene! Quin works here with help from some more familiar names – including Jason Stein on bass clarinet, Matt Ulery on bass, Nate Lepine on tenor and flute, and Nick Broste on trombone – all working at a level that's strongly spiritual – with rhythm patterns that Kirchner builds beautifully on drums, percussion, and kalimba – occasionally augmented by a few samples here and there, but mostly acoustic overall. Lepine's in great form throughout – as is Stein – and their long reed solos add these currents of personality to the record that really sends the whole thing home! Broste gets in a few powerful passages too – especially at some of the moodier moments – and Ben Boye plays piano on one track too. The whole thing's a double album that really needs the full space for expression – and titles include "Together We Can Explore The Furthers Beyond", "Mumbo Jumbo", "The Ritual", "Crossings", "Ripple", "Self-Portrait In Three Colors", "Drums & Tines (part 2)", "Flutter", "Karina", "Wondrous Eyes", and a version of Sun Ra's "Brainville". The record's got a hard fusion groove – and all the tracks are long instrumentals served up with plenty of power, and plenty of ferocity! Kumasi is a 13-piece band, with a bigger, more rhythm and percussion heavy style than some of the smaller, more raging Afro Funk groups out there, which is not to say that Kumasi doesn't bring the heat, they definitely do on this all originals set – they just do it with a depth jazzy influences alongside the African hotness. Steve Lacy/Yuji Takahashi/Takehisa KosgiDistant Voices (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Columbia/Aguirre (Italy), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
One of the rarest Steve Lacy albums of the 70s, and one of the most compelling too – as it features Steve in territory that's quite different than some of his group and solo performances of the period! The group is a trio – with Yuji Takahashi on piano and celeste, and Takehisa Kosugi on electric violin – and in addition to his usual soprano sax, Lacy also plays tenor, timpani, transistor radio, and a variety of other odd elements – as do the other two members of the group – all of which makes for a very open sense of improvisation, full of unusual sounds! Steve is far more open than usual – and if you were to hear the record without seeing his name on the front, you might be surprised that it's a Lacy album at all – which is only one more layer of the album's charm. Harold LandNew Shade Of Blue (with bonus download) ... LP
Mainstream/We Want Sounds (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $13.99
An overlooked chapter in the Harold Land/Bobby Hutcherson partnership that recorded more famously for Blue Note – a date that's issued here under the tenorist's own name, but which also features equal contributions from Hutcherson on vibes! Tracks have that long, modal quality that has the pair almost birthing a whole new generation in jazz expression – a style that's more sophisticated than earlier soul jazz, yet equally soulful in its own sort of way – aware of all the freedoms of the avant scene, yet never fully indulgent of them – and always guided by a spirit set loose by Coltrane, but in ways that are very different than so many others in the post-Coltrane generation! Part of that difference might be Land's personal phrasing on tenor – or Hutcherson's amazing approach to vibes – both without any sort of comparison at all, and set up here in a group that features Bill Henderson on acoustic and electric piano, Buster Williams on bass, Billy Hart on drums, and Mtume on congas. The latter gets his own song named on the record – the great "Mtume" – and other titles include "Short Subject", "Ode To Angela", and "De-Liberation". LP, Vinyl record album

Drift (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $22.99
A great tribute to Fela Kuti from saxophonist Bukky Leo – a player with Nigerian roots, but who's been working on the London scene for decades – with music that goes back to some key early records for the Acid Jazz label, and some great releases in more recent years! Here, Leo takes on the music of the master – playing four long Fela tunes in a live setting at the Jazz Cafe – working with a tight group that's heavy on percussion, guitar, and Fender Rhodes – but who leave lots of room for Bukky's own solos, which are maybe even more of a drawing card than the name of Fela on the front! Leo's got this rich, raspy, soulful sound on tenor – one that always grabs us like Pharoah Sanders during his classic years – and which makes his solos here feel a lot more jazz-based than you might be used to hearing on an Afro Funk record. CBS/Be! (Germany), 1964. New Copy Tri-fold (reissue)... $24.99
Brilliant modern jazz from German trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff – recording here in 1964, but sounding years ahead of his time, with an amazing a blend of jazz and Asian styles! The album's one of Mangelsdorff's best ever – a set of rhythmic tunes that seem clearly informed by the work of Ornette and Joe Harriott, but also based along eastern themes picked up by the group on a tour of the Orient – and performed by a sharp-edged quintet that includes Heinz Sauer on tenor and soprano sax, Gunter Kronberg on alto, Gunter Lenz on bass, and Ralph Hubner on drums. There's some nice traces of MPS/Saba modal and Jazz Meets the World styles – and overall, the rhythmic pulse keeps things from getting as free and out as on Mangelsdorff's 70s sides – really soaring, but never too far out – and always with a cool exotic groove. The whole thing's great – instantly striking, and always a treasure – and titles include "Sakura Waltz", "Now Jazz Ramwong", "Raknash", "Theme From Vietnam", and "Burungkaka". LP, Vinyl record album

Mistura PuraHollywood Spritz (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ubiquity, 2018. New Copy 2LP ... $15.99 18.98
There's a bit of Hollywood here, but also a fair bit of bossa nova, older jazz, and other modes that remind us a bit of our favorite older records on labels like Schema and Irma – maybe no surprise, given that the whole thing was recorded in Milan! Federica Grappasonni is at the helm – directing the music providing the rhythms and plenty more – but also opening up the door of the studio to bring in some great artists from the contemporary scene – including Jessica Lauren on keyboards, Josh Evans on trumpet, and Lorenzo Tucci on drums! Those more familiar names will give you a good idea of what's going on here – in an all instrumental set that includes the tracks "C'Est De Rhythme", "Nuevo Jungo", "La Sound 1976", "Hollywood Spritz", "Looking For The Angels", "Sunset At Venice Beach", and even a version of the "Charlie's Angels Theme". Jackie MittooJackie Mittoo – The Keyboard King At Studio One ... LP
Universal Sound/Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 29.99
Killer funky organ – and 100% Dynamite! Jackie Mittoo is one of the all-time great organists – as essential to Jamaica as Booker T was to Memphis, or Jimmy McGriff was to New York. He's legendary these days as the player who completely transformed the Hammond sound with his unique Jamaican instrumental style during his early years with the Skatalites, and on his later solo recordings for Studio One. This set's probably the first time Mittoo's work has been properly packaged and remastered – and the folks at Soul Jazz have done an amazing job of selecting just the right tracks for such a project. The whole thing wails along with a stone rocksteady groove – with plenty of nice drum parts and funky rhythm bits underneath Jackie's soulful organ. If you dug the label's 100% Dynamite series, you'll really dig this one – and the whole thing's very much in the same vein. Tracks include "Drum Song", "Reggae Rock", "Hot Tamale", "Killer Diller", "Black Organ", "Stereo Freeze", "Wall Street", "Darker Shade Of Black", "Juice Box", and "Killer Diller". Astral Dimension (Fabio Fabor)Galassia M81 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Edizioni Minstrel/Spettro (Italy), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Lost sound library genius from Fabio Fabor – working here under the name of The Astral Dimension – which is a very good tag for the sound on the set! Although recorded in 1981, the record has all the warmth of some of Fabor's 70s material – lots of swirling, spacey keyboards – some in these streams of color that are really beautiful, and make you feel like you're taking a trip through the stars, with everything slowing down at warp speed – others in more spare, linear passages that evoke a slightly different mood, and balance things out nicely. The whole thing almost feels like a later update of the old "trip to space" genre for mood music records – and titles include "Antares", "Via Lattea", "Nebulosa", "Beta 700", "Stella Nova", "Monte Palomar", "Eclisse", and "Saturno". Baiano & Os Novos CaetanosBaiano & Os Novos Caetanos (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
CID/Far Out (Brazil), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A very weird record – and an odd parody of both Os Novos Baianos and Caetano Veloso! The album's recorded live, and it's very much in the spirit of early work by Os Novos Baianos – with loads of tunes that have a funky samba style, with some nice rough touches – but there's also a laugh track to the set, clearly marking the record as a comedy effort! From what we know, the set's a parody of the artists named in the title, and their laidback approach to music – but since we can't really understand the lyrics, we just enjoy the grooves – as the record's got plenty of strong rootsy groovers that stand out, even if you can't get the jokes! Titles include "Ciranda", "Vo Bate Pa Tu", "Nega", "Cidadao Da Mata", "Folia De Rei", and "Dendalei". LP, Vinyl record album

Vinyl Ermitage, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $11.99
Cathy Berberian's a hell of a hip singer – one who could work in very avant modes, yet also get name-checked by Donald Fagan at the same time – thanks to the wide-ranging scope of her work! That scope is explored very fully here – as Berberian performs a range of material that runs from sharp commentary by Kurt Weill, to very offbeat performances of Beatles material, to some more familiar avant vocal material – scored by frequent partner Luciano Berio, as well as William Walton – and even featuring one piece composed by Berberian herself! Titles include "Stripsody", "Sequenza III", "Avendo Gran Disio", "Tarantella", "Song Of Sexual Slavery", "Surabaya Johnny", "Yesterday", "Ticket To Ride", "Something Lies Beyond The Scene", and "Michelle". Gearbox (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
Fantastic work from the team of Binker Golding and Moses Boyd – a pair who just seem to get more and more fantastic with each new album – as they do here, with some heavy-hitting help from Evan Parker on tenor and soprano sax, and Byron Wallen on trumpet! Yet the most compelling addition might be drummer Yussef Days – who works alongside the drums of Moses, to create this really dynamic two-drum sound to the group – one that's really explosive right from the start, especially when the tenor of Golding gets wrapped around the horns of Parker and Wallen! Tori Handsley also plays harp on the record, and can really change up the sound when her approach is strong – on titles that include "Children Of The Ultra Blacks", "How Land Learnt To Be Still", "The Death Of Light", "The Discovery Of Human Flesh", and "How Air Learnt To Move". Binsy (Miriam Bordoni)Binsy ... LP
Phonotype/Cabiria (Italy), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
A really moody little sound library record – heavy on analogue electronics, but used in ways that are nicely changed up from track to track – and quite different than the usual library album of this style! Some tracks are light and tuneful, but others are quite dark and experimental – sometimes almost verging into territory that's not too far from Throbbing Gristle, especially on one weird vocal number! Even the lighter tunes are offbeat – maybe more in the territory of early 80s German groups like Pyrolator or Der Plan – showing once again that most of the sound library scene was years ahead of its time – given the freedom they had to experiment. Titles include "Oscillazione", "Caotico", "Dinamica", "Fede", "Sereno", "Speranza", "Miraggio", and "Ricerca Chimica". LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette ColemanOrnette Coleman – The Atlantic Years (10LP set – 180 gram pressing) ... LP
Atlantic, Early 60s. New Copy 10LP ... $159.99 174.98
An incredible collection of work – music from a relatively short period in the long career of alto sax legend Ornette Coleman – but one that still may well represent his creative high point! Ornette's unusual sound and group style had already been brewing for a few years before these sides – but at Atlantic Records, the reedman really locked into gear – exploring his new sense of rhythm and timing with the legendary lineup that included Don Cherry on cornet, Ed Blackwell on drums, and Charlie Haden on bass – a group that many still try to rival all these many decades later! The core combo are at the heart of most of the records here – which also include later Atlantic issues of recordings from the sessions of the early 60s albums – but Coleman also explodes on tenor on one record, and launches into his album-length improvisation on the Free Jazz classic – an album that gave a name to a genre to come. The box features the full albums Shape Of Jazz To Come, Change Of The Century, This Is Our Music, Free Jazz, Ornette, Ornette On Tenor, The Art Of The Improvisers, Twins, To Whom Keeps A Record, and The Ornette Coleman Legacy – the last of which features rare recordings, on vinyl for the first time. All albums are on 180 gram vinyl, with vintage-style tip-on jackets – and the whole thing is beautifully put together. LP, Vinyl record album

Alice ColtraneMonastic Trio ... LP
Impulse/Superior Viaduct, 1968. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $20.99
Early work by Alice Coltrane – somewhat under the shadow of her late husband, as you'd guess from the use of his name on the front cover – but really stepping out here with a voice of her own! The Monastic Trio of the set features Alice on harp and piano – alongside bass from Jimmy Garrison and drums by either Ben Riley or Rashied Ali – both really fluid players who open up nicely in this way that's never to far out, at least in the way that John Coltrane was using rhythms at the time – but which allow Alice to really take the lead as a bold musical visionary of her own! Perhaps most exciting, Pharoah Sanders sits in on one of the album's longest tracks – blowing tenor with a force that's enough to bring back The Great One – but the real charm of the set is Alice's piano work, bubbling out here with a sensitivity that we never would have expected from the harder-edge sessions cut with Coltrane – that new level of spirituality she instantly brought to her own solo sessions. Titles include "Ohnedaruth", "Lovely Sky Boat", and "Atomic Peace". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most mindblowing albums ever recorded – anywhere, anytime! This 1969 set stands as one of the greatest records ever cut by Gal Costa – done at the height of the Tropicalia movement, and featuring a sublime mix of styles that really gets the spirit of the movement right. Arrangements are by the legendary Rogerio Duprat – who effortlessly shifts the backings between stark electronics, sweet bossa, gliding strings, jazzy piano, and baroque orchestrations that dance around with a surprising amount of grooves! Tunes include some classics by Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, and Gilberto Gil – served up in amazing new versions by Gal and Duprat! Danser's Inferno (John Danser)Creation One ... LP
Lirs/Everland (Austria), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99
That's "Danser", not "dancer" – as in John Danser, who's also best known for a groovy jazz album under his own name! This sweet little set from the early 70s may well be John's best album ever – a wonderful blend of funky grooves and these wonderful raspy vocals – completely charming, and with a quality that's hard to describe, but really really great! There's a wickedly offbeat feel to the record that keeps us coming back – at some level the funky big band grooves of the MPS 70s generation, but mixed with a more sensitive independent American vibe too – especially given that some of the lyrics remind us a bit of Matthew Larkin Cassell. Danser plays tenor, and leads the group – the vocal cuts (about half the album's tracks) feature Randy Maddison singing. Titles include the classic "Sombre Guitar", plus "Inferno", "And Once My Love", "Badinage", "Time Is Laughing", "Sunday Morning", and "Turning The Corner". LP, Vinyl record album

Cometa (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Maybe not the sound of kung fu fighting that you're used to from the big martial arts boom of the 70s – but a fantastic little record that still fits very well underneath that movement's themes of the time! Rino De Filippi's maybe going for a style here that's an imaginative take on kung fu – with some moments that are shamelessly orientalist, mixed with others that evoke a more upbeat action vibe – almost as if you folded together the different soundtrack styles used on Enter The Dragon and the Kung Fu TV show! Yet as with lots of the Cometa library material of the period, there's also some much deeper ideas going on, too – some moments of surprising sonic complexity that mix woodwinds and offbeat percussion in very cool ways – which really makes for a compelling album as the set moves on. There's definitely some of the tenderness promised by the title – especially at those great points when the colors of Dickerson's vibes are flowing beautifully next to Davis' mellow basslines. But there's also other points that are a bit more dynamic, too – bold notes from Walt that have this sense of texture that's really amazing – followed by equally wonderful sounds from Richard. You've heard Domenico before as part of the groundbreaking +2 trio with Kassin and Moreno Veloso – but this is only the second time the singer has worked on his own, and the first that he's given us his full name on the cover! That difference might mark a new sort of confidence in Domenico – a way of putting forth his careful songwriting genius with a bit more dexterity, which certainly gets a bit of assistance in the album's work by Sean O'Hagan and Kassin! If you've ever liked Domenico before, you'll totally love him here – and if this is your first time discovering his music, then get ready to go backwards – as the strength of this album will win over your ears, and send you searching for all the other wonderful music he's given us over the years. The album's got a dynamic energy that almost beats Don's American work of the time – lots of funky rhythms, and a cool MPS groove that shows the label's strong 70s legacy of larger group jazz recordings! Like other MPS dates of the time, there's a nice mix of electric and acoustic instrumentation in the lineup – bass and guitar that kick the rhythms up strongly, plus keyboards and electrified strings that bring in their own unique sounds. The most amazing records to date from Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra – just the kind of cosmic, spiritual session you'd expect from the group's name – perfectly placed in a Chicago lineage that includes Sun Ra's Arkestra and the best years of the AACM! The group's got all the collaborative spirit of the latter reference – a largeish ensemble made up of some of the city's most important avant musicians in recent years – including Nicole Mitchell on flute, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Josh Abrams on acoustic bass, Matt Bauder on clarinet and tenor, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, and Mike Reed and John Herndon on drums – all players who know each others strengths through countless gigs together – coming together under the visionary leadership of Rob Mazurek on cornet. There's some slight electro-acoustic elements, which further complicate the sound of the record – but all without ever taking it off base – and the whole thing's got a righteous sort of energy that makes us mighty proud that sounds this great came from our hometown. Spacious fusion from Extra Ball – one of Poland's best electric jazz ensembles of the late 70s, working here in a style that's dynamic, yet not as overly jamming as some of the group's rock-influenced contemporaries on the European scene! Leader of the group Jaroslaw Smietana plays guitar with a warmly chromatic mode – a sound that's somewhere in the vast space between Wes Montgomery and Pat Metheny, and which seems able to traverse that distance with ease as the tunes roll on. Other instrumentation includes electric piano, bass, drums, and some especially great work on saxes from Andrzej Olejniczak – whose tone here really grounds the record and gives it its best soulful moments. One of the greatest Joe Henderson albums of the 70s – a suite of tracks dedicated to the four elements – and served up with some great accompaniment from Alice Coltrane! The style here is a wonderful mix of Coltrane's spirituality and Henderson's down-to-earth soulfulness – in a style that recalls some of the best moments on Coltrane's sublime Ptah The El Daoud album – a set in which Henderson's tenor was a key part. At times, Joe blows with a bit of Coltrane-like searching – but at others, he's bringing up more of a rhythmic pulse that really gives Alice a great focus – using her piano, harp, and harmonium alongside bass by Charlie Haden, violin from Michael White, and percussion from Ndugu Chancler and Baba Daru Oshu. Jackson SistersJackson Sisters ... LP
Tiger Lily/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... About June 22, 2018
An amazing bit of soul – and one of the rarest funk records of the 70s! This masterpiece was recorded by The Jackson Sisters, a semi-gospelly soul group that has a sound that's a bit like The Voices of East Harlem, but that's a lot harder, and that has a deeper soul sound overall! At times, the group is funky – as on their incredible track "I Believe In Miracles", a rare groove classic if there ever was one, and one of the most in-demand tracks we've ever stocked. At other times, the girls have a mellower soul sound, with great raw harmonies that remind us of the Volt work by The Emotions, but with much rougher instrumental backing. This album's the only one they ever cut – and it's just about impossible to find in the original pressing (and in fact, we've never seen a copy!) Apart from the amazing cut "Miracles", this one includes loads of gems like "Rockin' On My Porch", "Shake Her Loose", "(Why Can't We Be) More Than Just Friends", and "Boy, You're Dynamite"! A wicked set from reedman Azar Lawrence – one of the few albums issued under his own name, and a great example of the waves he was making on the 70s west coast scene! There's a depth here that goes beyond most of the other Fantasy Records sessions of the time – a sound that would be right at home on Strata East, or in some of the more righteous Cobblestone sessions – no surprise, given that the ensemble here is filled with key spiritual jazz players, including Woody Shaw on trumpet, Hadley Caliman on flute, Joe Bonner on piano, Billy Hart on drums, Mtume on congas, and even Jean Carn on a bit of guest vocals! A rare album of funky soul from the Bay Area scene at the start of the 70s – and a set that's every bit as righteous as you might expect from the cover! The group's the creation of singer/keyboardist/arranger Leon Pattillo – hence the name – and you might know Leon from his later famous work in the 70s – including a stint with Santana, and loads of great work with other soul artists. But here, he's a young genius working in the freest, funkiest style of the San Francisco generation – with a vibe that's maybe a more spiritual take on territory explored by Sly & The Family Stone – with an earthier, more indie vibe overall. The group has great interplay – tight instrumentation, but never slick, and with some nice long-haired currents – and vocals are by Leon and a female singer – on titles that include "Confusion", "If I Had The Power", "Sightless", "Back Roads", "This Is The Beginning", and "Mirage". Raw sounds from the Chicago scene – a mighty nice performance from the group of drummer Makaya McCraven – captured on four track cassette at the tiny Danny's Tavern! The setting and recording style really works with the approach of the group – as Makaya's drums are nice and loud – beat-y and splashy – maybe more funky than on any othe records under his name, and fitted with fantastically bold work from Junius Paul on bass, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, and the great Nick Mazzarella on alto sax! There's also some turntables from Lefto – but used musically, and not in the kind of heavy-handed way that used to ruin a jazz session a decade or so back – and the group perform titles that include "The Locator", "Above & Beyond", "Venus Rising", "Icy Lightning", "Left Fields", "RFJ III", and "Early Bird Once Again".
