✨✧ VariousNigeria Soul Fever – Afro Funk, Disco, & Boogie – West African Disco Mayem (3LP set – with download) ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Nigerian groove of the 70s – way past the familiar modes of Fela Kuti, and served up here in a range of artists who followed on a huge second wave of soul that soared from Lagos and beyond in the second half of the decade! The music here opens up in a sweet range of different styles – including bits of club and boogie that have come into the scene to open up Nigerian funk in more global modes for the dancefloor – blending African roots with American currents, in a sound that's completely unique – and which is way better than some of the Afro-disco modes that were coming from Europe a the time! As usual with the folks at Soul Jazz, the set's an ear-opening work of genius – from the superb track selection, to the very thorough notes and research – which really do a great job of presenting this side of Nigerian funk that's always been a bit eclipsed by some of the bigger names on the scene. Liner notes are by dancefloor historian Bill Brewster – and titles include "Do The Funkro" by Joni Haastrup, "You Can't Change A Man" by Christy Essien, "Afrikana Disco" by Akin Richards & The Executives, "Ocheche" by Don Bruce & The Anges, "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" by Tee Mac, "Get Up & Dance" by Benis Cletin, "Enoviyin" by Colomach, "Nwaeze" by Jimmy Sherry & The Musik Agents, "Wake Up Your Mind" by Joni Haastrup, "Disco Dancing" by Angela Starr, "Mr Been To" by Arakatula, "Living Every Day" by Tee Mac with Marjorie Barnes, "Wake Up Africa" by Arakatula, and "Soul Fever" by Benis Cletin. ✨✧ Ebo TaylorLife Stories – Highlife & Afrobeat Classics 1973 to 1980 ... LP
Strut (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Great Ghana grooves from Ebo Taylor – a tremendous collection of his funkiest 70s work – and a much-needed reintroduction of his talents to the world at large! Much of the music here has strong links with more familiar Afro Funk – but the overall approach is often a bit unique, too – lots more guitar in the rhythms at times, in ways that echo the lighter lyricism of highlife, yet all without losing the commitment to bottom sounds that made 70s changes in African music so great! The package does a great job of archaeology – bringing together not just cuts recorded under Taylor's own name, but also work with other groups too – all in a set that offers plenty in the way of notes and historical details, too. 2LP set features 12 titles that include "Heaven", "Aba Yaa", "Atwer Abroba", and "Peace On Earth" by Ebo Taylor, "Tamfo Nyi Akyir" by Apagya Showband, "Ohiani Sua Efir" by Asasse Ase, "Ene Nyame Nam A Mensuor" by Pat Thomas & Ebo Taylor, "Egya Edu" by Ebo Taylor & The Pelikans, and "Love & Death" by Ebo Taylor & Uhuru Yenzu. ✨✧ VariousThai? Dai! – The Heavier Sound Of The Luk Thung Underground ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest collections of underground Thai rock we've seen – and it certainly is The Heavier Sound Of the Luk Thung Underground – including a uniquely Thai vision flavored with a Black Sabbath riff, psych makeovers of Thai folklore, and a bunch great tunes that meld Bangkok life with western garage and psychedelia masterfully! All of the tunes are heavy in their own way, but it's by no means heavy in a simple hard rock way – loads of impassioned vocals, astounding percussion, tripped out guitar and other strings and woozy organ keep the arrangements exciting, and the otherworldly aspects play nice with accessible melodies. Titles include "Kuen Kuen Lueng Leung" (the aforementioned heady take on Sabbath's "Iron Man"), "Ruk Kun Samong" by Plearn Promdan, "Pai Joi" by Rung Petchburi, "Nam Mun Pang" by Sroeng Santi, "Dub Fai Kui Gun" by Sroeng Santi and more. 14 massive slabs of heavy Thai psych in all! ✨✧ Laurie Anderson & Kronos QuartetLandfall ... LP
Nonesuch, 2018. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 29.98
A beautiful collaboration between two of the most important forces in leftfield music in the early 80s – multi-media artist Laurie Anderson and modern string legends Kronos Quartet – coming together here in an extended Anderson composition inspired by the experience of Hurricane Sandy! It's been years since we've last heard from Laurie, and she's really returned to her roots here – still using her voice a bit, but also playing violin a fair bit too, along with keyboards, samples, percussion, and lots of her unusual filters and other electronic elements. Most selections are sort, and work together beautifully – almost in territory that might be described as a string quartet take on the modes of United States. Titles include "All The Extinct Animals", "Built You A Mountain", "Darkness Falls", "Dreams Translated", "The Water Rises", "Our Street Is A Black River", "Nothing Left But Their Names", "Thunder Continues In The Aftermath", "Old Motors & Helicopters", and "Everything Is Floating". Albert AylerMy Name Is Albert Ayler ... LP
Debut/Jeanne Dielman (Italy), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A key early album by Albert Ayler – a mindblowing record even all these many years later, and a key introduction of Ayler's music to the rest of the world! The set begins with a compelling spoken introduction from Albert – really taking the time to introduce himself and his new approach to jazz – then rolls into searing sounds on tenor and soprano sax, played with accompaniment from a European trio that has Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, Niels Bronsted on piano, and Ronnie Gardier on drums. A number of the tunes are standards – used by Ayler here in ways that are similar to some of Cecil Taylor's initial recordings – as a way of marking his own different in jazz, before setting out on his own compositions in years to come. Given the quartet setting, there's less of the locked horns and rhythms of some of Ayler's ESP recordings to come – but the difference in format also makes the album a real standout in his catalog, too. Titles include "Bye Bye Blackbird", "Summertime", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "CT". LP, Vinyl record album

BaroquesBaroques (mono colored vinyl pressing) (2017 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Chess/Sundazed, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
One of the more unusual albums issued on the legendary Chess Records label in the 60s – not the usual jazz, blues, or soul the imprint was known for – but a full length set by a pretty raw combo from the Milwaukee scene! The Baroques are maybe more garagey than their name might imply – with a searing, gritty sound that verges into psych at times – but which still keeps things tight, short, and nicely focused. The group does feature some electric harpsichord in a few spots – although not as much as The Left Banke – and titles include "Mary Jane", "Iowa A Girl's Name", "In Silver Light", "Purple Day", "Boop", "Love In A Circle", "Bicycle", "There's Nothing Left To Do But Cry", and the pretty great-titled "Musical Tribute To The Oscar Mayer Weiner Wagon". Ray BarrettoHead Sounds ... LP
Fania, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
"Head Sounds" is a heck of a great way to describe this album – as it's filled with some of Ray's most mind-expanding cuts! The album kicks off with the tune "Acid", which you probably know from the album of the same name, but which still really does a great job of setting the pace here – and then it rolls into some fantastic longer cuts that really have a very strong jazz component. Ray and the group stretch out tremendously, hitting off-color notes and tones that almost make the record feel like one of Eddie Palmieri's jammers from the same time. 3 tracks on the set are over 8 minutes long, which should give you a good feel of the openness of the work – and titles include "Abidjan", "Espiritu Libre", "Drum Poem", and "Tin Tin Deo". Czeslaw BartkowskiDrums Dream ... LP
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A drum-heavy set from Polish percussionist Czeslaw Bartkowski – mostly solo on most tracks, but with occasional accompaniment on trumpet, electric piano, and soprano sax on a few of the fuller numbers – plus some great funky big band arrangements at the end! The sound is often spare and moody, but also melodic – similar to some of Max Roach's solo percussion efforts – in that Bartkowski isn't too concerned with going too far out, or getting too free – just working drums and percussion within new modes in jazz! The last few tracks on the album flesh out the sound with fuller orchestrations from Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski – in a way that's almost funky at times – and other players on the record include Tomasz Szukalski, Tomasz Stanko, and Adam Makowicz. Titles include "Drums Dream", "FAO", "Druga Swobodna Etiuda", "Rozmowa Ze Sliwka Bez Pestek", "Good Times Bad Times", and "Lullaby For Tiny Chinamen". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe BataanSalsoul ... LP
Mericana, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
A landmark album from Joe Bataan – so great, that it made the entire record company change its name! The record has Joe really bursting out after his seminal Latin Soul work of the late 60s – blending Latin rhythms and American soul into a whole new style of music – one that Joe called "Salsoul", because of it's mixture of salsa and soul! The blend is fantastic, a real milestone in the NuYorican scene – and handled perfectly by Joe on every cut! There's some massive Latin funk on here, including the tracks "Latin Strut" and "Aftershower Funk", plus some straighter Latin jazz, like "Sunny Gets Blue Mambo", and a great Latin Soul cut with English vocals called "Johnny". Franco BattiatoPollution ... LP
Superior Viaduct, 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $23.99
A really full-on early set from Franco Battiato – a set that's maybe halfway between some of his more avant compositions and some of the modes of the Italian prog scene at the time! The album's a concept one, based on the growing pollution of the planet – in a mode that's maybe similar to Earth Rot, by David Axelrod – and like that set, Battiato mixes together unusual sounds and ideas with some more straightforward rockish passages. Battiato works with a small group of musicians – and while guitar steps to the lead at some points, others very much more abstract sounds and forms. Titles include "Il Silenzio Del Rumore", "31 Dicembre 1999 – Ore 9", "Beta", "Plancton", "Pollution", and "Areknames". LP, Vinyl record album

BB Boogie (Daz I Kue)Standing On The Wall ... LP
R2 (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 29.99
It's been many years since Daz I Kue first rocked our world with his grooves in Bugz In The Attic – and since that time, he's only gotten stronger and more soulful as a solo act – to the point where a new project like this almost blows away some of his previous work! As you might guess from the cover and name, the project has a very vintage feel – somewhere in the territory of late 70s/early 80s clubby funk, with warmer instrumentation than back in the Bugz days – and a fantastic sense of production that could almost have you playing this set alongside later Funkadelic material, or early work from Prince! Yet there's also a sharpness, too – that new vision of funk that's always made the London scene so wonderful – from the Incognito/Brand New Heavies years onward. Khari Simmons plays bass on most of the record – and the bass is definitely in the lead – and singers include Vanessa Freeman, Greg Blackman, Leroy Burgess, DNS, Monica Blaire, Joy Jones, and others – really helping flesh out the sound on tracks that include "Opposition", "Sweating & Shaking", "Wanna Be With You", "We Can Do It", "Standing On The Wall", "In The Middle", "Let Love Grow", "Stay Woke", and "RAyanne". Jorge BenTabua De Esmeralda (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
Searing samba soul from Jorge Ben – one of his best-remembered albums of the 70s, and for good reason too! The album's got a slightly fuller feel than some of Ben's other work of the time – never slick, but with backings balanced nicely against his own raspy vocals and acoustic guitar – sweetening things up with a bit of the strings you'd find on Forca Bruta, but with a hint of the soul to come on Africa Brasil! The balance is great – thanks to arrangers Osmar Milito, Darcy De Paulo, and Hugo Bellard – and as usual, Jorge's vocals are the main attraction – dipping, turning, and rising with this really unique, personal feel – Ben-like brilliance at its brightest. The whole thing's wonderful – a key gem from the Philips years – and titles include "Cinco Minutos", "Zumbi", "Brother", "Os Alquimistas Estao Chegando Os Alquimistas", "Errare Humanum Est", "Menina Muler Da Pele Preta", "Hermes Tri", and "O Namorado Da Viuva". Jane BirkinBirkin Gainsbourg – Le Symphonique ... LP
Warner, 2017. New Copy 2LP ... $23.99 25.98
A wonderful setting for the great Jane Birkin – working here with a full symphony orchestra, in very fresh interpretations of the classic songs of her onetime partner, Serge Gainsbourg! The orchestrations are wonderful – never sleepy, and always nicely light – so that Jane's voice is very upfront in the mix, but has a vibe that's quite different than most of her other later work – almost more fragile, in a way – and certainly with more world experience in her tone than when she sang some of these songs in her youth. The project is a surprising treat, and has us loving Birkin all over again – as well as being really amazed that some of Serge's songs could sound so different. Titles include "Baby Alone In Babylon", "Jane B", "L'Anamour", "La Javanaise", "Amour Des Feintes", "Valse De Melody", "Ces Petits Riens", "La Chanson De Prevert", and "Requiem Pour Un Con". Paul BleyImprovisie ... LP
America/Bamboo (France), 1972. New Copy ... $23.99
Incredible work from Paul Bley – and a record that captures him in his excellent electric period, working in a different setting than we've heard him elsewhere! The group on the set is a trio – one that matches Bley's work on electric piano and synthesizer with percussion from Han Bennink and vocals, piano, bass, and additional synthesizer from a young Annette Peacock! Peacock is especially restrained on the record – especially if you only know her later, straighter work – and her contribution here is wonderfully subtle and extremely lovely. Side one features the track "Improvisie", a free improvisation with Bley on electric piano and synthesizer – and tonalities are as "out" as the playing, which is generally quite spacious and dynamic – though hardly quiet. The second side features a Peacock tune titled "Touching" that's a bit more intense – very much in the spirit of the work on the first side, and a unique slice of magic from this one-off session! Budos BandBudos Band III (includes bonus download) ... LP
Daptone, 2010. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The Daptone House Of Soul blueprint is a big part of the recipe, as it should be. Classic funky soul grit holds it all together and each cut has an unshakable groove, but with that in full effect, the group is free to explore. The Budos horns are as impeccable and communicative as ever, with brass that ranges from classic stateside funk and Afro influences. The percussion (bongos, clave, cowbell and more) is just as broadly thought out and tightly delivered, snakey bass lines, flute and the sometimes secret weapon on Budos Band III, the electric organ – which brings a bit of a garage psych/funk rock vibe. Truly exceptional work from the one of the best bands of their generation! Includes "Rite Of The Ancients", "Black Venom", "River Serpentine", "Unbroken, Unshaven", "Nature's Wrath", "Golden Dune's", "Budo's Dirge", "Raja Haje", "Crimson Skies", "Mark Of The Unnamed" and "Reppirt Yad" (a funked up Lennon/McCartney cover...read it backwards, kids). Jack Bongo BurgerEnd On Bongos (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Hi Fi/Modern Harmonic, 1957. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
A sweet set from that great record moment when Latin styles were coming into play with the hipper sounds of the bachelor pad world! Jack "Bongo" Burger was a west coast percussionist with a very similar style to Jack "Mr Bongo" Costanzo – and in fact, since they're both named Jack, and have a bongo middle name, we always wonder whether or not they're the same person! Whatever the case, this album's a tasty batch of bongo-heavy tracks – with a style that's similar to some of Costanzo's work on Liberty, although perhaps with slightly less of a Latin bent. The group includes Buddy Collette on flute and sax, plus piano, trumpet, electric bass, and some nice odd percussion. Kind of like a combo of some of Collette's jazz work, and the exotic stuff that was also appearing on the Hi Fi label. Tracks include "Jordu", "China Nights Mambo", "Negre Setin", "Chiu Chiu", and "Mambo Burger". LP, Vinyl record album

Fat Possum, 1969. New Copy ... $12.99 17.98
Not the RL Burnside of later revival years – when he was maybe recorded a bit too much – but an album that captures the man right at the start of his career – when he was a young talent, but working in blues modes that were far beyond his age! The set features Memphis and Mississippi recordings from 1969 – done for Adelphi Records, and with Burnside in a completely compelling mode as a singer who feels more like he's working for the postwar country blues 78rpm market, than any sort of contemporary label – really inflecting both his vocals and strings of his guitar with an amazingly personal vibe – and giving the kind of sound that feels like it's just risen from the soil of the south. Titles include "Two Trains Runnin", "Hobo Blues", "My Black Name Ringin", "Sat Down On My Bed & Cried", "Nine Days In Jail", "See My Jumper", "Tom Wilson's Place", and "Poor Boy". Take a trip through hell with the CA Quintet – an obscure late 60s combo from the Twin Cities – and one who've got more than enough psychedelic power to live up to the Cali promise of their name! The album's got a pretty amazing cover – nude models dancing in a satanic landscape – and the sounds within are even more incredible – way more eerie and offbeat than other records of this nature, with a true undercurrent of evil that really comes through in both the darkness of the instrumentation, and the creepy way the vocals are put across. ✨✧ Contemporary Jazz QuintetLocation ... LP
Strata/180 Proof, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... On March 2, 2018
Hip stuff from Detroit! The Contemporary Jazz Quintet were a groundbreaking ensemble that mixed together hardbop and modernist playing – with a keen ear for Miles Davis' experiments of the late 60s, but also with an underground Detroit flavor that's well in keeping with that city's rich traditions. The group was ostensibly led by pianist Kenny Cox – and it's his name that their two Blue Note albums were issued under – but on this rare third set from the Detroit-based Strata label, the group appears more as a collective, with players that include Ron Brooks, Charles Eubanks, Charles Moore, Leon handerson, and Ron English. Tracks are long, with a stretched-out pre-Bitches Brew sound – plus some freer avant jamming. Titles include "Noh Word", "Bang!", "Tao", and "Nguzo Saba". LP, Vinyl record album

Michael Cosmic/Phill Musra GroupPeace In The World/Creator Spaces (with bonus download) ... LP
Cosmic/Now Again, 1974. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $49.99 55.98
An amazing package – a pair of rare avant jazz albums, presented here together! The first album is Peace In The World – maybe the only album issued under the name of Michael Cosmic – but a set that's part of a key legacy with his brother, reedman Phill Musra! The set has Cosmic in very heady territory – sounds that come from his young tenure in the AACM, his brief time with Cecil Taylor, and his budding reputation on the 70s Boston scene – where the set was recorded, and almost stands as a precursor to the rich legacy of improvisational jazz that would emerge on the New England scene for decades to come! Tracks are long and very free, but have spiritual currents too – and Cosmic is mostly on piano, with Musra on soprano sax and tenor, Leonard Brown on soprano and tenor, John Jamyll Jones on bass, Huseyin Ertunc on drums, and Eric Jackson on percussion. Titles include "We Love You Malcolm X", "Peace In The World", "Sapce On Space", and "Arabia". Next is the related album Creator Spaces, by Phill Musra – recorded at the time when he was part of the very underground Boston avant scene – a world that had a slightly different vibe than music coming from Chicago, Detroit, or New York! The album's got a spiritual avant bent – soulful at the core, with lots of references to outer space as well – and an approach that feels a lot like a classic Saturn Records session by Sun Ra, both in sound and spirit! Musra plays reeds, chimes, and percussion – and the group features some incredible sax work by Michael Cosmic, who also plays a bit of organ, again in a tripped-out, Ra-type way. Huseyin Ertunc plays percussion – very free and loose, in ways that are a great balance to the more angular lines of the reeds – and tracks include "The Creator Is So Far Out", "The Creator Spaces", "Egypt", and "Arabia". Vanguard/Craft, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Maybe the greatest moment ever from Country Joe & The Fish – an insane blend of politics, psychedelia, rock roots, and more – all wrapped up in a nice of carnival-esque style that really lives up to the group's name! Many folks later copied the group – and others, like The Fugs, worked in somewhat similar territory – yet there's a really special sound to the group on this early set, a balance that brings more focus to otherwise trippy moments, more sense to their political agenda, and these sharp instrumental inflections that really send the whole thing home. Blues historian Samuel Charters produced, giving the record another influential quality – and titles include "The Fish Cheer & I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die-Rag", "Who Am I", "Pat's Song", "Magoo", "Jam", "Eastern Song", and "Colors For Susan". Long Hair (Germany), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
An obscure German group who take their name from the second album by Love – stepping out here in a style that maybe has some of the best influences from that famous group! Like Love, these guys clearly have a blues rock core, but quickly open up to more lyrical and personal moments – mixing acoustic and electric guitar at once, and really just letting the strings of the instruments weave their tale with the drums – while the words of the tunes have a quality that's quite different in spirit from the Krautrock you might expect. Most tracks are relatively sort – and titles include "Free", "Future", "Find My Way Home", "Young Man", and "Can Smile" – but side two also features a long jam titled "A Day In The Rest Of My Life" – again, maybe a bit like the second album by Love! LP reissue also features the bonus track "Marijuana". LP, Vinyl record album
