✨✧ Pat WilliamsThreshold ... CD
Capitol/Soundwings, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
Nice stuff from Pat Williams! Although known for mostly groovy 60s stuff (ala his legendary Verve and soundtrack work), this album features Williams hitting more of a 70s jazz funk groove, with a nice electric edge. The tracks are long, and the solos are played by Tom Scott and Marvin Stamm (mostly) – and the rest of the group includes Mike Melvoin on keyboards, John Guerin on drums, and Larry Bunker on percussion. Cuts include "And on the Sixth Day", "The Witch", and "Mr. Smoke". CD
(Out of print.)
Also available Threshold ... LP 3.99

✨✧ Pete YellinMellow Soul ... CD
Metropolitan, 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mellow soul is right – because this set swings like some great lost 70s session on Muse or Mainstream! Pete Yellin was playing way back in the day, and his work on alto and soprano is joined here by Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Chick Corea on piano, Carl Allen on drums, and Vincent Herring on additional saxes. The best cuts on the record have a post-Coltrane searching mode that's augmented with a tighter hardbop approach – and Pete Yellin produced the set with a no-nonsense approach that gets the best out of the group's sound. Titles include "Shaw Thing", "Mellow Soul", "Song For Lynn", "Dr J", and "Warm Valley". CD
(Penmark through barcode.)

✨✧ Lester YoungLester Swings ... LP
Verve, 1945/1950/1951. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Lester Young definitely swings here – on material from a number of different Verve albums of the early 50s – with work from Nat King Cole on piano and Buddy Rich on drums on one session – plus more work from either Hank Jones or John Lewis on piano, and Buddy Rich and Jo Jones on drums! ✨✧ Lester YoungPresident Lester Young ... LP
Norgran, Early 50s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Early Verve work from Lester Young – recorded in a setting that features 2 different groups: one with Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Barney Kessel, and JC Heard; the other with John Lewis, Joe Schulman, and Bill Clark. The sound is mellow and soulful throughout – a perfect summation of Young's small-group genius, recorded in the easygoing Norman Granz style that was so groundbreaking at the time. Titles include "Pete's Cafe", "Count Every Star", "Stardust", "I'm Confessin", "These Foolish Things", and "Lester Swings". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousAudio Alchemy – Experiments In Beat Reconstruction ... CD
Ubiquity, 1997. Used ... Out Of Stock
Ubiquity's first volume of tracks from some of best underground producers of the 90s – thirteen spooky turgid tracks from the likes of Q-Burns, DJ Wally & Swingsett, Molasses, Mumbles, The Sharpshooters, Bugs, and Cut Chemist. This stuff kicked a lot of these guys off, and it's still a good American counterpart to things like the Headz comp on MoWax. CD

✨✧ VariousDeep Concentration – The Future Of Experimental Hip Hop ... CD
Om Records, 1997. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
One of the comps that rode the mid 90s wave of turntablism, with a nice time table inside the gatefold sleeve. Not as much over the top trickery as you might hear on the Return of The DJ compilations on Bomb, but some essential moments, like Cut Chemist's "Lesson 6" and the X-Men's "A Turntable Experience". Radar's "Radar Frees Tibet" and Beyond There "On Wax" display some nice turntable moments, while a few of the other tracks don't really justify their place in the context of the comp, but are nice to have anyway – like Latyrx's "Say That". Also includes Prince Paul "DJ Prince Paul Vs The World", Ingrid De Lambre & Eddie Def "Poeisies, Scene 1 Le Blues", DJ Swingsett & DJ Wally "Centaurus Space Bass (Cloak & Destroy mix)", Peanut Butter Wolf & The Beat Junkies "They Don't Fall Down", Mumbles "At The Mountains Of Madness" and Q-Burn's Abstract Message "Book Of Changes". VariousEngland Swings – Lux & Ivy Dig That UK Sound ... CD
Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 19.99
A really great take on the sort of territory that's usually covered in Cramps-related compilations like this – a set of tracks that still trawls through the weird and wooly world of the 7" single in the late 50s and early 60s, but one that does so here with a special ear towards British 45s from the time – stacked up with a whole host of cool, offbeat tracks we never would have heard otherwise! The set mixes instrumentals, rockers, vocal numbers, and other modes together – with a total of 28 weird tracks that really work wonders together – and make you feel like you've found some very old jukebox in the back room of some east end pub that has been standing in the same place for decades. Titles include "Cool Gool" by Sharkey Todd & The Monsters, "Demon Lover" by Lynn Cornell, "The Mole In The Hole" by The Southlanders, "My Baby's Crazy Bout Elvis" by Billy Boyle, "Diabolical Twist" by Max Bygraves, "Taboo" by Sounds Inc, "Death Valley" by Charles Blackwell, "Fried Onions" by Ted Taylor Four, "African Waltz" by Johnny Dankworth, "Payroll" by Reg Owen, "Juvenile Delinquent" by Suzy Cope, and "Just Couldn't Resist Her With Her Pocket Transistor" by Alma Cogan. ✨✧ VariousFell From The Sun – Downtempo & After Hours 1990/1991 ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 90s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful collection of modern mellow music – served up in a set that features very different territory than the usual sorts of compilations given to us by Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs – not the older music that they put together so well, but work from an early 90s moment when the duo were a rising part of the British scene as Saint Etienne! Yet despite that connection, they nicely provide a generous overview of a slightly different vibe – mellow tracks that followed in the wake of the big Brit dance explosion of the late 80s – not entirely the downtempo modes that you might expect, at least in the way that "downtempo" has come to mean instrumental hip hop over the years – and instead, some nicely kicked back tracks from some of the more creative studio talents of the time! Titles include "Never Get Out The Boat (flying mix)" by The Aloof, "Spiritual High (moodfood megamix)" by Moodswings, "Floatation" by The Grid, "Afrika (love & laughter rmx)" by History, "Cascades (hypnotone mix)" by Sheer Taft, "It Could Not Happen (essential trance hall mix)" by Critical Rhythm, "Higher Than The Sun (higher than the Orb ext mix)" by Primal Scream, "Snappiness (7" edit)" by BBG, "I Don't Even Know If I Should Call You (Marshall Jefferson symphony mix)" by Soul Family Sensation, "Temple Head (Pacific mix airwaves)" by Transglobal Underground, and "Speedwell (radio edit)" by Saint Etienne. ✨✧ VariousJazz Scene (2CDs & book) ... CD
Verve, 1950. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic package – a must-have for any fan of older jazz! This CD set reissues material originally packaged in the rare Jazz Scene box set issued by Verve at the end of the 40s – a limited package of 78rpm singles that documented the styles and sounds of modern jazz at the time, filled with great drawings and photos, and one of those super-rare collectibles that you never ever see! This set does a fantastic job of re-presenting the material – filling one CD with tracks in the original box set, and a whole other CD with bonus material that was never issued at the time! Plus, it comes with great notes, reproductions of the original art, photos, and a whole lot more. It's a rare treasure both visually and musically – as the edgey recordings are in the best late 40s modern mode, blending bop, swing, and influences from other fields – really incredible work that deserves to be heard again and again! Titles include "Introspection" by Ralph Burns, "Sono" by Duke Ellington, "Swingin For Julie & Brownie" by Flip Phillips, "Spring In Naples" by Ralph Burns, "Tailspin" by Billy Strayhorn, "Tea For Two" by Willie Smith, and "Tanga" by Machito. ✨✧ VariousSanta Swings The Windup – 28 Christmas Stockings Full Of Shellac Dust ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), 1930s/1940s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The "shellac dust" in the title will let you know what sort of territory you're in here – Christmas songs that go way way back, to the glory days of the 78rpm single, served up in a host of jazz and vocal modes! The set features a fair bit of tracks from the prewar years, and although some of the song titles are familiar, the choice of cuts is unique – so that you'll hear a fair bit of unusual readings of Christmas classics – all of which makes for a package that really lives up to other Bear Family Holiday sets that we've been digging for years! CD version features 28 tracks in all – and titles include "Snow Ball" by Louis Armstrong, "Peace Sister Peace" by Monette Moore & The Ebonaires, "Jingle Bells" by Glenn Miller with Tex Beneke, "And The Angels Sing" by Count Basie with Helen Humes, "What Will Santa Claus Say" by Louis Prima, "Blow Blow Thou Winter Winds" by Bob Crosby with Marion Mann, "Let It Snow" by The Ramblers Orchestra, "Santa's Secret" by Johnny Guarnieri with Slam Stewart, "Ring Dem Bells" by Charlie Barnet, "Christmas Night In Harlem" by Paul Whiteman with Jack Teagarden, "There's Frost On The Moon" by Chick Webb with Ella Fitzgerald, "Bells Of Auld Lang Syne" by Joel Cowan & Thornel Swartz, and "Santa Claus Came In The Spring" by Putney Dandridge.
