RoyHargrove & The RH Factor —
Hard Groove ... CD Verve, 2003. Used ...
Out Of Stock
A funky collaboration of new and old players – as trumpeter RoyHargrove explores a range of classic styles with a host of excellent guest stars! The RH Factor project includes work by Bernard Wright, Cornell Dupree, Karl Denson, and other funk luminaries – and it also features great vocal performances from the likes of Common, Q-Tip, Erykah Badu, and D'Angelo. The groove soars from Miles-inspired electric to the heavy funk of George Clinton – and makes plenty of side-trips in between – exploring a range of soulful jazz, both new and old, and coming off a lot better than we might have thought! Titles include "Pastor T", "I'll Stay", "Common Free Style", "Juicy", "The Stroke", "Poetry", "Liquid Streets", "The Joint", and "Forget Regret". CD
(Out of print. Small cutout hole through the rear of case.)
RoyHargrove & The RH Factor —
Strength EP ... CD Verve, 2004. Used ...
Out Of Stock
The second set of jazzy jam tracks from RoyHargrove's RH Factor – following very nicely on the style of the first! Hargrove's funky trumpet is very firmly in the lead of the set – pushing the group through a sound that's tightly percussive at the bottom, but which also has a lot of complicated horn parts on the top. There's traces of New Orleans, Afro Funk, and New York grooves in the set – but the overall approach is also pretty laidback, open, and personal to the group. We really love the mellow grooving soul of the title cut "Strength" – which features lead vocals by Renee Neufville and piano by the great Bernard Wright – and other tracks include a remake of "Listen Here", plus "Rich Man's Welfare" and "Bop Drop". Also includes a bonus "Bigga Than You Know It Is" mix of "Universe", and a "Soulfest Vocal Remix of "For Fun", featuring Omar! CD

We're normally not the biggest fans of Oscar Peterson, but on this set, he's working with tenorist Ralph Moore and trumpeter RoyHargrove – and really gets past his usual trio sound! The album's got a strong and soulful frontline that really makes things happen – with Moore's tenor solos as impeccably placed as always, and Hargrove's trumpet strutting boldly at the top of the proceedings. Some of the strongest work on the set happens on Peterson's original compositions – and titles include "Rob Roy", "Blues For Stephane", "Cool Walk", "Ecstasy", "Truffles", and "She Has Gone". CD
Dream session indeed, as this date brings together Eddie Henderson, Benny Golson, George Coleman, Grover Washington, Jaki Byard, and Ron Carter – plus a crack group of younger players including RoyHargrove, Nicholas Payton, Joe Locke, and Ed Thigpen – performing a great set of songs made famous by Miles Davis! Titles include Davis classics "All Blues" and "So What", plus standard "My Funny Valentine" and "I Thought About You", as well as the original "Davis", penned by Benny Golson. CD
With RoyHargrove, Jon Faddis, Terence Blanchard, Nicholas Payton, and Clark Terry. CD

Marc Cary —
Cary On ... CD Enja (Germany), 1994. Used ...
$8.99
Young lion jazz from a great little combo – one headed up by pianist Marc Cary, and featuring RoyHargrove on trumpet, Ron Blake on tenor, and Yarborough Charles Laws on flute! The record's got the positive, forward-thinking sound you'd guess from the players – a great mix of entitled optimism with some nice undercurrents of darkness – really showing this generation of players on the cusp of their maturing talents! The horn work from Blake and Hargrove is especially nice – full of soulful colors that really make the record sparkle – and other players include Dwayne Burno on bass, Dion Parson on drums, and Charlene Fitzpatrick on a bit of vocals. Titles include "Melody In C", "The Trial", "The Vibe", "He Who Hops Around", and "We Learn As We Go". CD
Johnny Griffin on tenor sax, RoyHargrove on trumpet and flugelhorn, Kenny Barron and Peter Martin on piano, Christian McBride and Rodney Whitaker on bass, and Victor Lewis or Gregory Hutchinson on drums. CD
Ralph Moore's a player we always like to keep our ear on, and this album's no exception – a cracklingly soulful batch of tunes played with a razor-sharp quintet, all tied together beautifully with Moore's tenor on top! The date's great proof that rock-solid sessions could still be cut well after the classic Blue Note or Prestige Records years – and Moore's sense of timing and guidance easily matches that of many other tenor titans from previous years. And even more than some tenorists, who really see themselves as the star of the show, Ralph's got a sense of warmth and comradeship that always seems to bring out the best in his players – who on this date include RoyHargrove on trumpet, Benny Green on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and either Victor Lewis or Kenny Washington on drums. Titles include "Pheobe's Samba", "Girl Talk", "Line D", "Monk's Dream", "310 Blues", and "Hopscotch". CD
Sonny Rollins on tenor sax with Clifton Anderson on trombone, RoyHargrove on trumpet, Mark Soskin on piano, Jerome Harris on guitar, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Steve Jordan, Jack DeJohnette, and Al Foster on drums. CD
With Kenny Barron, James Carter, RoyHargrove, Barry Harris, Charles McPherson, and Christian McBride. CD

Warm, laidback work from drummer Jimmy Cobb – an album that features the famous drummer working with a mellow group that includes RoyHargrove on trumpet and Russell Malone on guitar! Bassist John Webber is also in the quartet – greatly understated, compared to other albums – and the main interplay here is between Hargrove's spaciously-blown lines, and Malone's slow-burning and chromatic sounds. The set list is mostly ballads – and titles include "Emily", "Stairway To The Stars", "I Had The Craziest Dream", "Remembering U", "If Ever I Would Leave Again", and "With You I'm Born Again". CD
(Out of print Hybrid SACD pressing – plays on both SACD and regular CD players. Includes original slipcase.)

Superblue —
Superblue ... CD Blue Note, 1989. Used ...
Out Of Stock
A wonderful project from late 80s Blue Note – a group that features trumpet and arrangements from Don Sickler, plus some great help from Bobby Watson as well – all to craft a sound that's as rich, soaring, and joyous as any solo projects from either player! The group's an octet, but have the tightness of a Blue Note quintet from the 60s – working with sharp arrangements in a really classic sound – one that has the horns in tight formation, but also really opens up to solo space right away – allowing plenty of room for Sickler on trumpet, Watson on alto, Frank Lacy on trombone, RoyHargrove on trumpet and flugelhorn, Bill Pierce on tenor, and Mulgrew Miller on piano. The bass of Bob Hurst and drums of Kenny Washington provide some smoking rhythms throughout – and titles include "Open Sesame", "Conservation", "M&M", "Time Off", and "Marvelous Marvin". CD
(1989 US pressing.)

Cedar Walton —
Composer ... CD Astor Place, 1996. Used ...
Out Of Stock
A record that not only shows off the great skills of pianist Cedar Walton as a composer, but one that also shows how he can really work a special sort of magic when he lets some horns into his group, and shifts from his usual mode in a trio! Walton's always wonderful on the keys – and works here with Christian McBride on bass and Victor Lewis on drums – but it's the presence of the hornmen on the record who really shade things wonderfully – the presence of Vincent Herring on alto, Ralph Moore on tenor, and RoyHargrove on trumpet – all really bringing out some great qualities in Walton's original tunes. Titles include "Martha's Prize", "Minor Controversy", "Hindsight", "Groove Passage", "Theme For Jobim", and "Groundwork". CD
Features a long list of guest musicians including RoyHargrove, Jon Hendricks, Joe Lovano, Gerry Mulligan, Joshua Redman, Christian McBride and George Shearing. CD

Stunning – and some of the best work we've ever heard from Shirley Horn! We know, we know – you've seen a bit too much of her in the jazz racks of late – but don't let that stop you from picking up this album, because it's amazing! Shirley returns to the spare, subtle simplicity of older albums like Travelin Light and Where Are You Going – working in a trio format that's so stripped down, so mellow, most of the work on the set is really just done by Shirley's vocals. And as when Shirley's singing at her best, the album is filled with tunes that you might have heard before – but which take on a whole new life and imagination in Shirley's hands. For some reason, she seems to find words in these songs we've never heard before – putting them over with new meanings, new emotions, and a sound that's incredibly sublime! Ahmad Jamal and RoyHargrove make some slight guest appearances on the set, but forget about them – because the real magic is Shirley, sounding greater here than ever! Titles include "Forget Me", "Maybe September", "Everything Must Change", "May The Music Never End", "Take Love Easy", and "Watch What Happens". CD
Tremendous blowing from tenorman Sherman Irby – an alto player who can swing soulfully one minute, then hit these great modern lines the next – a wonderful blend that comes through beautifully in this sweet session for Blue Note! The album's got a title that makes you think it might be a hokey, retro soul jazz set – but instead, it's got a great deal of complexity – with none of the cliches you might expect from a soul food title, especially in the 90s. Most of the set is pretty stripped down – with Gerald Cannon on bass and Clifford Barbaro on drums – but one track adds in guest trumpet from RoyHargrove and piano from James Hart – and a few others feature Ed Cherry on guitar. Titles include "Bama", "Lake Tuscaloosa", "Too High", "Passage Of Time", "Aunt Dorothy", "Call To Order", and "Away From Home". CD
Abbey Lincoln backed by Rodney Kendrick on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – plus special guests Kenny Barron, Pat Metheny, Christian McBride and RoyHargrove! CD
Christian McBride on bass – with Joshua Redman on saxophone, Steve Turre on trombone, RoyHargrove on trumpet and flugelhorn, Cyrus Chestnut on piano, and Lewis Nash on drums. CD
A great set of Sonny Rollins Road Show material – recorded in Japan and NYC in the fall of 2010 – the latter from the Sonny Rollins @80 Concert at The Beacon Theatre! The set is bookended by the Japanese recordings – a nearly 15 minute "They Say It's Wonderful" live in Sapporo with Rollins backed by Russell Malone, Bob Cranshaw, Kobie Watkins and Sammy Figueroa. "St Thomas" features that line up in Tokyo a week later. The Beacon Theatre players include Ornette Coleman on "In A Sentimental Mood", Christian McBride on "Sonnymoon For Two and RoyHargrove on "I Can't Get Started". CD
Severely funky jazz from trumpeter Russell Gunn – working here in an electrified mode that reminds us a bit of recent work from Nicholas Payton or RoyHargrove – but which comes off sounding a lot hipper overall! The set's got a bouncing, bass-heavy groove that's clearly rooted in older funk traditions – but it's performed by Russell with a host of cutting edge up and comers, in a style that's pushing lots of new styles and sounds of its own! Gunn himself plays acoustic and electric trumpet, as well as keyboards – and he's joined by Stefon Harris on vibes, Nick Rolfe on Fender Rhodes, and Kebbi Williams on tenor and electric tenor. The set's got lots of extra space for added instrumentation that includes work on alto, percussion, pro tools, turntables, and voice – and the overall sound somehow manages to come off with a lot harder-hitting edge than other recent projects of this sort! Titles include "East St Louis", "John Wicks", "No Separation", "The Critic's Song", "Yesterdays", and "Stranger Fruit". CD
