An overlooked gem from Airto – recorded after his 70s years on bigger labels, but a set that almost tops all of them in the end! There's a wonderful mix going on here – a blend of rootsy and electric, and Latin and Brazilian – the former clearly from the placement of the record on New York's Montuno label – an imprint that did plenty of great sessions filled with Latin jazz! The shift makes for a fresh one for Airto – still plenty of room to show off his famous percussion impulses, yet in a slightly different way – often grooving in a Latin fusion mode that's a nice maturation from the CTI years. The set's filled with all-star players – including Jorge Dalto on electric piano, Raul De Souza on trombone, Joe Farrell on flute, Alphonso Johnson on bass, and Oscar Castro Neves on keyboards, guitar, and cavaquinho – and the lovely Flora's also on board to sing a bit on the set. Titles include the extended jammer "Tombo", plus "Aqui Se Pede", "Jump", "The Return", "Sin Salida", and "Anatelio". LP, Vinyl record album
A nice lively batch of tracks, with a hard groove, some nice percussion, and a very striking sound. Titles include "El Pon", "Descarga A Las Doce", "Samba", "Gandinga", and "Mas Y Mas". LP, Vinyl record album
(60s black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has minimal wear, spot of marker on the back.)
Rare Caribbean funk from the 70s – the second volume of West Indies Funk – once again delivering a stylistically diverse take on the classic funky soul from groups such as The Troubadours, Boo & The Tru Tones, Roosevelt Johnson & His Spice Islanders, The Cassanovas, Blue Rhythm Combo and others! All the things we dug about the first volume are in the mix once again – and ultimately the set goes even further with the range and boundlessly funky styles. Includes numbers that could just as easily come from the funky underground of the regional US and others that roll out grooves that are purely indicative of the Caribbean – with steel drums, tropical rhythms and all around breezier, sunnier touches. Even better than the first one! Includes "Funk Good Feeling" by The Troubaodours, "Have A Party" by The Esquires Now", "Don't Blame This Joint" by Boo & The True Tones", "Shango!" by Steel Image, "Something's Definitely Going On" by Mamwaw, "Look-Ka-Py Py" by L Charmers, "Funky Crookie" by Exile 1, "Sing A Simple Song" by The Cassanovas, "The Big Pay Back" by Kenny & The Beach Boys and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Latin Brothers —
El Picotero ... LP Discos Fuentes (Colombia), 1974. Very Good ...
Out Of Stock
A record with a cover that's a lot more hard-hitting than some of the later global efforts from The Latin Brothers – and one with a sound that definitely matches that image too! There's a raw sound here that's right in keeping with the best of Discos Fuentes at the time – music that clearly draws inspiration from the combo of Willie Colon up in New York, but which features backing from Fruko Y Sus Tesos, who have a style that's even more raw – with all sorts of great percussion next to the jazzy piano and soaring trombone lines! Piper Pimienta Diaz handles lead vocals – and titles include "Y Tu Que", "Echa Pa'Lante Camara", "La Perla", "Que No Pare La Rumba", "San Juan De PuertoRico", "Son Dolores De Cabeza", and "El Picotero". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing! Vinyl is nice and clean, but has a click on the first track on side two – and cover has a bit of wear, and some tape on the seams.)
Some of Ricardo Ray's earliest work – recorded in New York in the mid 60s, after Ray had "arrived" from the PuertoRico scene! The set's actually got a groove that points the way towards the famous Ray sound of years to come – a style that has traces of older mambo modes, but which also extends out in a bold, proud, pre-salsa style with plenty of great lead vocals from Bobby Cruz. There's some great descarga elements in the mix too – tight rhythms with loads of jazzy instrumentation that really makes the record cook. Highlights include the jazzy "El Mulatu", the slamming descarga "Viva Richie Ray", the "monkey twist" "Brother Ray", and the shing-a-ling number "Mambo Jazz"! LP, Vinyl record album
(Original black label pressing – nice and clean! Cover has light wear on the front, but is otherwise nice.)
A drum-heavy spectacular – recorded with a really rootsy feel! The first half of the material was recorded in Africa – not credited especially well, but done with a stripped-down sound that's very heavy on drums and other odd percussion instruments – recorded in that rough, loud Folkways style that really makes the music sound nicely bombastic. The remaining tracks on the set are from a variety of North and South American locales – Brazil, PuertoRico, Cuba, Jamaica, and even the US – as Baby Dodds turns in a solo on the final track! Titles include "Ceremonial Drums", "Dance Drums", "Stamping Tubes", "Salute To A Chief", "Sit Log Talking Drum", "Djuka Dance Drums", "Lucumi", "Jumping Dance Drums", "Cuminia Drums", "Rhythms For The Deity Ogoun", and "Jazz Drumming". Biddu & The Orchestra —
Eastern Man ... LP Epic, 1977. Near Mint- ...
Out Of Stock
Magical disco work from the enigmatic Biddu – one of the few guys working from a larger mainstream studio perspective that we can really dig in the genre! Biddu's got a way here of blending older pop modes, Eastern instrumentation, and soaring disco strings – at a level that's almost a slightly tripped-out take on the Barry White sound, but which is also unabashedly pop as well. Original tracks and surprising covers juxtapose on the set – and while some of the work on the album's relatively mellow, there's more than a few tunes that keep the disco groove up! Titles include "Nirvana", "King Kong", "PuertoRico", "Boogiethon", "Funky Tropical", and "Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon". LP, Vinyl record album
