An essential introduction to the work of this legendary group – an important American issue of some of their best material – all of which never came out in our market back in the day! There's so many different elements going on here, it's impossible to pin down – avant and psychedelic modes, Brazilian styles and postmodern ones, all put together with sublime production that's also way ahead of the pack! One of those great little sets on the Abril Cultural label – featuring a record of classic work by the artist, plus a full booklet of amazing photos and helpful writings in Portuguese. This one's got a color photo of Gil playing with Os Mutantes on TV, a haunting photo from exile in London, and lots of other nice shots. On the record, you'll get Gil singing "Expresso 2222", "Procissao", "Geleia Geral", "Aquele Abraco", "Bat Macumba", and "Domingo No Parque" – plus you'll also get Gil compositions by other artists, like "Lugar Comum" by Joao Donato, "Baba Alapala" by Zeze Motta, "Soy Loco Por Ti America" by Caetano Veloso, "Copo Vazio" by Chico Buarque, and "Meio De Camp" by Elis Regina. The first album by Marisa Monte, and the start of a fantastic run of records – really strong work that had Monte emerging as maybe one of the strongest new acts in Brazil at the time! The set is live, which is unusual for a debut – and that also makes for energy that's a bit more raw and spontaneous than you might guess from some of Monte's later, more sophisticated production – especially when the singer hits some sharper edges that almost feel punkish at points. The small group features Roberto Alves on piano – and the set list includes a version of Os Mutantes' "Ando Meio Desligado", plus "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", "Speak Low", "Comida", "Negro Gato", and a nice remake of "Chocolate", an old Brazilian soul song by Tim Maia. Forbidden Fruit from the great Rita Lee – a record that has her working with the Tutti Frutti combo, a line that's decidedly more mainstream than her more famous group, Os Mutantes – but one who also really let Rita focus on her newly-developed title for putting over a very catchy tune! The group bring more of a rock-heavy finish to the record than some of Rita's later work – and the guitars and vocals are nicely compressed down in the production – maybe a bit like some of the best Brit mainstream work of the mid 70s – an approach that works well for Lee, and maybe even makes some of the music feel as much like a commentary on mainstream rock as much as catchy tuneful work headed for the charts.
