✨✧ Alfred NewmanLove Is A Many Splendored Thing ... CD
Kritzerland, 1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
Love Is A Many Splendored Thing is filled with the sort of lush strings and rich emotion that Newman could do so well – heard to great effect on the album's famous main theme, but then changed up nicely with some surprising exotic touches that echo the Hong Kong setting of the film – little bits of percussion and woodwinds that trade back and forth nicely between some of the more anglo-oriented dramatic moments. The set's a great example of Hollywood scoring at its best during the 50s – and titles include "Third Uncle", "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing", "The Moon Festival", "Destiny", "Viendras Tu Ce Soir", and "Mark's Letter". Ngozi FamilyDay Of Judgement ... CD
Now Again, 1976. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
Some of the heaviest work to come from the African scene of the 70s – the initial offering of the Ngozi Family – a group who clearly take strong inspiration from the Cream years of the UK scene, but who also come across with a grittier, punkier vibe overall – thanks to lean, stripped-down instrumentation and some very sharp drums! The drums rattle out underneath the magnificent fuzzy guitar lines in the lead – almost with this compressed quality that recalls Thin Lizzy at their funkier moments – but much more raw, stripped-down, and unpolished – so that the English language lyrics burst out with a really biting sound! The record's one of the first in the Zamrock tradition, and is still one of the best – a set that deserves to be in any collection of hard rock, proto-punk, and even funk rock from the 70s. Titles include "I Wanna Know", "Day Of Judgement", "We Wonna Give It To Her", "Tikondane", and "Let Me Know". CD comes in a great book-style cover – and features the bonus tracks "We Were Not Told", "She Looks So Crazy", "I've Been Looking For You", and "Sunka Mulamu". CD

✨✧ Gary NumanTelekon ... LP
Atco, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The third of three masterful synth rock masterpieces by Gary Numan! Telekon wasn't as massively popular as Pleasure Principle or as trailblazing as Replicas, but we love it just as much, with the icy cool, almost ominous mood of Numan at his best, ever so slightly taking some creative steps into synthy funk, but most often really honing on this darkness-tinged synth rock that he made his name on in the late 70s at just as high a level here at the dawn of the 80s. Takeshi ObayashiBig News (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Eight Islands (Japan), 2023. New Copy ... $28.99 33.99
A fantastic trio set from pianist Takeshi Obayashi – a player you might know from work with Jose James and Takuya Kuroda, but one who really steps out here strongly in a trio setting! Part of the record's strength is the rhythm help – as Ben Williams plays bass and Nate Smith plays drums – both musicians who have a round, chunky sort of groove that works perfectly with Obayashi's piano as he spins out strongly soulful tunes that offer up a vision of jazz piano trio energy in the post-Robert Glasper world! All players contribute equally to the sound – and Williams is especially great – on titles that include "Konbini Confessions", "Black Label", "The Big News", "Ngroove", "Beyond Affinity", and "Bop Boom". We Are Busy Bodies (Canada), 2023. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
The coolest record so far from this hip Finnish combo – one who seem to get deeper and more spiritual with each new release, and really knocking it out of the park with the combination of elements on this set! All the instrumentation is standard from the outside – but the way they come together is really magical, very personal, and completely inspirational – a blend of the drums of leader Antti Vauhkonen with the flute and saxes of Johannes Sarjasto, bass of Philip Holm, piano of Staffan Wolf Sodergard, and occasional vocals of female singer Marikukka Kiviharju. Titles include "Joo Tai", "Kunika Kukaan", "Calamity Caravan", "Kaiju Kaiju", and "Joona's Abs". LP, Vinyl record album

An album that should, by any means, not need any introduction from us. One of the high water marks in hip hop's history, raising the bar for lyrics, rhyme style, beats and song concepts. Too many classics here to name, including "Fudge Pudge", "Walk Into The Sun", "Releasing Hyp-notical Gasses", "Prisoners Of War", "Rough Side Of Town", "Organized Konfusion" and "Who Stole My Last Piece Of Chicken". ✨✧ OutkastSpeakerboxxx/The Love Below ... CD
LaFace, 2003. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Pick any 10 words out of any Outkast album description on our pages at random, and you'll see how dearly we've loved these boys throughout the years – but truth be told, deep down we didn't think that they would be able to pull off the double album/solo album project(s). We were seriously wrong – Speakerboxxx/Love Below is HUGE in every way, and both halves are great all the way through! If you were worried Big Boi's Speakerboxxx half would be lazy southern hip hop without Andre's freaky presence throughout, you can put those fears to rest right now. Speakerboxxx is a deeply soulful electro hopping pounder from front to back – every bit as innovative as Andre's half! Tracks include "Ghettomusick" (which features one of just two appearances by A3000 on the whole disc), "Bowtie" with Sleepy Brown, "Bust" with Killer Mike, "Church", "Tomb Of The Boom" with Konkrete, Big Gipp and Ludacris, "Flip Flop" with Jay-Z, "The Way You Move" and more. A lot of press has been given to the assumption that Andre 3000 has largely forsaken hip hop on his half (The Love Below) and has instead dived head first into cosmic future funk. Well, the rumors are true. There's lots of straight up jazz piano and horn bits on the Love Below, with Andre's half serious, half tongue-in-cheek romantic soul cabaret croon way over the top. It's steeped in the classic Outkast party vibe, but with lots of Sign Of The Times-era Prince (complete with androgynous distorted vocals), Parliament and Cameo thrown into the mix. Sick, energetic genius! Tracks include the deliriously great "Hey Ya!" single, "She Lives In My Lap", "Love Hater", "Happy Valentine's Day", "Roses", "Good Day, Good Sir", "Behold A Lady", "Pink And Blue", "Spread", "Dracula's Lady" with Kelis, and more. Who the hell knows what they can possibly do to surprise us after this – but wherever Andre 3000 and Big Boi go from here, they each have yet another classic in the discography! CD

LaFace, 2000. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Probably the most hyped hip hop album by rock critics of the last decade – but don't hold that against Stankonia, because these ghetto grooves from planet P-Funk were exactly what world needed in 2000! The millenium blowout party jam feel throughout is surely a nice change of pace from all the doom and gloom out there, but they still manage to spit out enough reality to keep things feeling true – particularly in the playful battle of the sexes showdowns. Dre, Big Boi and Organized Noize continue to innovate, even if they are at the top of the charts – and we can't wait to see where they take it all next! Tracks include "Gasoline Dreams", "So Fresh, So Clean", "Ms. Jackson", "Spaghetti Junction", "I'll Call Before I Come" featuring Gangsta Boo & Eco, "B.O.B.", "Xplosion" featuring B-Real, "We Luv Deez Hoez", "Humble Mumble" featuring Erykah Badu, "Red Velvet", "Gangsta Sh*t", "Toilet Tisha" "Slum Beautiful", and "Stankonia (Stanklove)". ✨✧ Jaco PastoriusJaco Pastorius ... LP
Epic, 1976. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This is the one that really nailed it for Jaco Pastorious – a brilliant showcase for all his many talents on the bass, and a key illustration of the way that he influenced an entire generation! Sure, Jaco in Weather Report was already pretty darn great – but here, on his own, he really gets to sparkle – jamming hard with heavyweights on some funky numbers, sliding out in spacey territory on mellow cuts, and even trying out a few more experimental moments that are far beyond what most other bassists might imagine for a debut of this nature. Players on the date include Herbie Hancock on keyboards, Don Alias on percussion, Lenny White on drums, Hubert Laws on flute, and Randy Brecker on trumpet – and titles include "Portrait Of Tracy", "Donna Lee", "Continuum", "Okonkole Y Trompa", "Kuru/Speak Like a Child", "Opus Pocus", and "Come On Come Over". ✨✧ Teddy PendergrassLife Is A Song Worth Singing ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Sublime solo material from the great Teddy Pendergrass – the kind of record that instantly proves that his departure from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes was a great idea, as the man alone is even more of a power to be reckoned with! The set's a cornerstone in that great second wave of Philly soul from Gamble & Huff – that point when the rest of the world was picking up on the disco grooves they forged earlier in the 70s, and they went for a more adult, more sophisticated style with singers like Teddy, Jean Carn, Phyllis Hyman, and others. The whole thing's perfect – and nicely balances between mellow moments and groovers – with gems that include the always-great "Close The Door", the massive "When Somebody Loves You Back", and other cuts that include "Get Up Get Down Get Funky Get Loose", "Life Is A Song Worth Singing", "Cold Cold World", and "It Don't Hurt Now". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Art PepperArt Is The Art Vol 1 ... LP
Trio (Japan), 1957/1958. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Late 50s recordings by Art Pepper – cut in Hollywood, in the studio, during the years 1957 and 1958, with a group that features Carl Perkins on piano, Ben Tucker on bass, and Chuck Flores on drums. This Japanese pressing isn't entirely clear on the original source of the material, but a few of the tracks are marked as "unreleased", so we're assuming that at least a few of the rest were issued by another label at one time. The quality of the work is great – laidback, crisp, and with Pepper blowing in that angular tone that was almost a bit of Konitz modern, but which still had plenty of LA bop influences. Titles include "Surfride", "Fascinatin Rhythm", "Too Close For Comfort", "Summertime", "Begin The Beguine", and "Holiday Flight". LP, Vinyl record album

Contemporary/Victor (Japan), 1956. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lost treasure – finally brought back to light! The album features previously unissued material by the team of Art Pepper and Warne Marsh – tracks recorded back in 1956 for Contemporary records, but only issued many years later as part of the Complete Contemporary project for Pepper's work. Why these dates never made it to wax is a real mystery to us – because the pairing of Pepper's alto and Marsh's tenor is perhaps even greater than the more famous team of Marsh & Konitz – and the sound here is completely wonderful – fluid, modern, and exceptionally poised – yet never without soul! CD includes a few master and original takes of some numbers – and titles include "All The Things You Are", "Tickle Toe", "Warnin", "Stompin At The Savoy", "What's New", "Avalon", and "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me". ✨✧ Lee PerryApe-ology – Super Ape/Return Of The Super Ape/Roast Fish, Collie Weed & Corn Bread (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan (UK), 1970s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A trio of legendary albums by Lee Perry – Super Ape, Return Of The Super Ape, and Roast Fish, Collie Weed & Cornbread – back-to-back-to-back in a great 2CD package complete with a handful of bonus tracks! Super Ape is the King Kong of dub albums – classic Lee Perry and an essential dub album, rendering Scratch's dense, multi-layered Black Ark rhythms in all their raw glory – with toasts and vocal snippets darting in and out of the dubs courtesy Prince Jazzbo, the Heptones, Dillinger and Scratch himself. Tracks include "Zion's Blood", "Croaking Lizard", "Dread Lion", "Patience", "Dub Along", "Black Vest", "Underground Root", "Curly Dub" "Three In One" and "Super Ape". Roast Fish, Collie Weed & Cornbread is Scratch's funky reggae party, put together at the Black Ark, with Boris Gardner, Mickey Boo, Sly Dunbar & Winston Wright. A nice batch of skanking Jamaica funk, with the requisite Black Ark smoke blowing throughout. Includes a bunch of classic Perry-isms, like "Yu Squeeze My Panhandle", "Roast Fish & Cornbread", "Soul Fire" & "Free Up The Weed". Return Of The Super Ape is mostly instrumental, but not quite dub, though some cuts do have Perry's vocals on top. Slow rolling and a bit murky, this set bears no relation to the Super Ape set, other than the freaky cover, but is still infused with Perry's unique vision. Includes the title track, "Bird In Hand", "Psyche & Trim", "Huzza A Haha" and "High Rankin Sammy". Includes 7 bonus tracks! CD

✨✧ Ralph PetersonTriangular ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great title for this set – given the very balanced energy of the trio in this collaboration between drummer Ralph Peterson, pianist Geri Allen, and bassist Essiet Okon Essiet! Things move along with an angular bounce at times – and although Peterson's drums get plenty of play in the mix, the bass is very upfront too – very much in the same space as Allen's bold lines on piano – played here with about as much fire as you'd get from Geri at the time! As usual with Peterson on Blue Note, some times step out in a more striking way than other work on the label at the time – while other still show a soulful sensitivity that really keeps things well rounded. Titles include "Water Colors", "Triangular", "Bemsha Swing", "Move", "Splash", and "Princess". CD

Konduko/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The second US album by the team of Phillip & Lloyd – much more in the Miami soul mode than their first record, cut for the Konduko subsidiary of TK with a feel that's almost Caribbean disco! The style's still got some traces of the duo's reggae roots, but the production's also more traditionally TK – with tight Miami funk in the backings, and strings arranged by Mike Lewis. Lots of choppy groovers – and titles include "Do What You Want To Do To I", "Juke Box Lil", "Keep On Moving", "Soon You'll Be Gone", "I Gave You Love", and "I Don't Know". CD

Uni, 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite 60s surf soundtracks ever – an amazing blend of Stu Phillips orchestrations with some key vocal moments from the trio of Dino Desi & Billy! The album's got a wonderful theme – "Thru Spray Colored Glasses" – sung initially by the trio, then served up by Stu in a number of variations that change with the different exotic locales of the film – India, Hong Kong, Hawaii, and Morocco – all referenced slightly in the instrumentation, but in ways that always retain Phillips' grooviest inspirations! Strings blend with bits of harpsichord, vibes, voices, Spanish guitar, and these "watery" woodwinds that almost remind us of Australian jazz in the same period – and titles include "Thru Spray Colored Glasses", "Big Wave Bay", "Incinerator", "Ranee Express", "Nazare", and "Cascis". PicnicPicnic ... CD
Data/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1985. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.99
Free jazz, and lots lots more – a lost nugget from an especially creative period in the Dutch scene, headed up by cellist Tristan Honsinger! At some level, the music echoes other improvised work by Honsinger – but at others, it also reflects the criss-crossing of genres and scenes that were taking place during these key years – a point after which free jazz had established itself, post-punk had opened up new waves of expression, too-prog tendencies had settled down, and the higher art world had opened their arms to embrace them all! The songs are both instrumental, and feature occasional vocals from Tiziana Simona Vigni – whose role with the sextet is not unlike some of Irene Aebi's performances with Steve Lacy, although maybe a bit more freewheeling and open-ended – more in a Recommended Records vein – a label that might have been a good home for this set, were it not issued by Data Records. In additional to Honsinger on cello and additional voice, the record also features Toshinori Kondo on trumpet, Jean-Jacques Avenel on bass, Sean Bergin on saxes, and Michael Vatcher on percussion – on titles that include "Quandro Era Estate", "Picnic", "Violets", "Teeth", "Orient Express", "Laly", "Romy", and "After The Rain". Vortex/Nature Sounds, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99
Groovily tripped-out work from vibist Dave Pike – and one of the few American albums that matches the experimental sound of his work for MPS! The session's often quite free and open – in a way that not only uses odd instrumental combinations and arrangements, but which also features some offbeat production by Herbie Mann that further abstracts the sound! Elements of Pike's earlier work shine through in a few of the more straightforward groovers, but his new European-endowed sense of hipness wins in the end – thanks to a good deal of modal grooves, psychedelic elements, and even a bit of fuzzy Fender bass! Other players include Lee Konitz on alto sax, Don Friedman on piano, Chuck Israel on bass (electric and acoustic), and Eddie Daniels on tenor and clarinet – and titles include "Free Improvisation", "The Drifter", "Ballad", "The Doors Of Perception", and "Anticipation". Trippy electric fusion from the west coast – a record that features Ponty, who was working with Zappa at the time, playing a set of electric jazz takes on Zappa tunes – with lots of added help from George Duke, who was also working with Zappa too! The set's almost a "birth of fusion" one – with Zappa arrangements that are clearly in a jazz-rock mode – and lots of electric bass, electric piano, and electric violin in the set. Tracks are long, and riff-heavy – and other players include Ernie Watts, Wilton Felder, Buell Neidlinger, and Ian Underwood. Two older greats from the MPS label scene of the 70s – coming together here in a later set that shows a wonderful maturation of their talents! Both Jean-Luc Ponty and Wolfgang Dauner had an early talent to stun the ears with great use of electronics – but both musicians are all-acoustic here, and really sounding wonderful in a set of extended duets recorded at the Bern Jazz Festival! Dauner's got a stunning ear for the full range of tones and colors in the piano – almost as if he inherited a new sonic spectrum from his early electronic experiments, then turned them back to straighter jazz – in modes that also have Ponty following suit with these long-flowing lines that remind us how great he can be in just the right mode. Each player gets one solo track, but the record is mostly duet material – and titles include "Suite For Claudia", "Once Upon A Dream", "Pamukkale", "Sketch Up & Downer", "Hong Kong Fu", and "Two Thousand One Years Ago". A burner of a set from Tito Puente – very well titled to suit the energy of the session! The tracks are all highly rhythmic numbers – short, but filled with jazzy horn flourishes and the kind of snapping rhythms that made the Puente group one of the biggest crossover favorites of the 50s. One of Sun Ra's best non-Saturn live sets of the 70s – a nice little record that shows the group mixing it up with equal parts avant garde and straight ahead jazz, all handled in that ever-growing large group style that made them a real force to be reckoned with in a concert setting! The album was recorded during the 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival, and has a bit more focus and polish than some of the other Arkestra live material from the time – a mature, coherent sound that almost points the way towards some of their work to come in the 80s – when Ra and the group were finally reaching the wider audience they deserved. The set's a double-length one, and features players who include John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen and Danny Davis on alto and flute, Pat Patrick on baritone, Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet, Craig Harris on trombone, and James Jackson on Ancient Egyptian Infinity drum – which is always a treat. Ra plays solar organ and moog, as well as piano – and titles include "Of The Other Tomorrow", "On Sound Infinity Spheres", "El Is The Sound Of Joy", "Gods Of The Thunder Realm", "Gods Of A Thunder Realm", "The House Of Eternal Being", and "Lights On a Satellite". A lost treasure from the Swamp Dogg universe of the early 60s – and one of the first albums to ever feature the vocals of Charlie Whitehead too! Charlie works here as a Swamp Dogg protege – and Swamp arranged, produced, and wrote most of the tracks on the record – with that great deep soul style of his own early gems! The vibe here is more straight ahead, with less of the gimmicks or jokes of Swamp's music – but we mean that in a good way, as Charlie really shines as a singer of southern soul – working here in the Capricorn studios down in Macon. At times, the set has a lot more overt politicism than your average southern soul album from the time – especially on tracks like "Call Me N_gger" and "The Freedom Under Certain Konditions Marching Band" – and oher tracks include "I Dig Black Girls", "Who Do They Think They Are?", and "Sweet Bird Of Success". Jazzaggression (Finland), 2022. Sealed ... $14.99 18.99
Christian Reim is a Norwegian jazz legend, with a legacy of recordings that stretches back to the 60s – but here, he presents new material with two different trios – both of whom have the pianist sounding even more vibrant than ever! The first half of the set features Harald Johnsen on bass and Jarle Vespestad on drums – working on original tunes by Reim that still have the modern edges of his early material, but also burst forth with a wonderfully striking sense of color – almost a lyricism that he never had before, and a great gift in his music! Those qualities seem to come out even more strongly on the second half, which features drums from Hakon Mjaset Johansen and bass from Ingebright Haker Flaten – the latter of whom we're used to hearing in a much more avant setting, but who really comes across with a bold sense of focus and power here, really driving the whole session forward in a great way. Titles include "Nina", "Polonese", "Dina", "O Jul Med Din Glede", and "The Little Girl From Guadeloupe". LP, Vinyl record album

Rita Reys meets Oliver Nelson – and a host of other great jazz talents, including Lee Konitz, Benny Bailey, Sahib Shihab, and Klaus Doldinger! The tracks on the set are all standards, but they're done in the tightly swinging style of Nelson's best backing work for vocalists at the time – complete with those warm tones and colors that always made his work some of our favorite in this mode. The mode is a bit different for Reys, who we normally know from more fragile settings – but it works especially well here, and almost seems to compensate for a faltering quality in her vocals at the time. ✨✧ Arthur RussellWorld Of Echo ... CD
Audika, 1986. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredibly beautiful set of work from Arthur Russell – one of the few records to be issued under his own name during his tragically short life – and a hauntingly spare blend of vocals, hand percussion, and solo cello – recorded with more than enough echo to live up to the title! The style is incredibly hard to peg – at times delivered with an almost Nick Drake-like approach that's extremely personal, but also sharing some styles with the mellower work of Suicide and other New York art rock groups from Russell's generation. Russell's voice billows out in a field of echo, directed almost imperceptibly by resonant notes on an electrified cello, and bumped along by muted rhythms that have almost no "attack" but lots of delay. One thing is extremely clear: that the album, which virtually died upon release back in the 80s, was years ahead of its time – and has a quality that easily ranks it as one of the most inventive recordings of its decade. The whole thing's as surprisingly appealing as it is experimental, and this extra-deluxe package features a number of additional tracks. Titles include "Wax The Van", "Tone Bone Kone", "Answers Me", "Being It", "She's The Star/I Take This Time", "Tree House", "See Through", "Lucky Cloud", "Happy Ending", "Tower Of Meaning/Rabbit's Ear/Home Away From Home", and "Our Last Night Together". ✨✧ Christian ScottChristian Scott Atunde Adjuah – Centennial Trilogy (Ruler Rebel/Diaspora/Emancipation Procrastination) (3CD set) ... CD
Stretch/Ropeadope, 2017. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A trio of fantastic albums from Christian Scott – all packaged together! First up is Ruler Rebel – a fantastic step forward for trumpeter Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah – an artist who takes on a new name with this recording, and a vibrant new sound as well! Scott still plays trumpet, but he also works with some electronics and effects, too – in a group that mixes acoustic elements from piano, flute, and percussion with electric work on Fender Rhodes and guitar – all in a sound that's swirlingly soulful, and as enigmatic as you might expect! The music reaches back to some deeper roots, but reworks the sound completely with lots of contemporary elements – and Scott's trumpet takes on a new sort of majesty in the setting – maybe hitting the promise we first saw in his music years back, but with even more focus here. Titles include "Encryption", "The Coronation Of X A Tunde Adjuah", "The Reckoning", "Ruler Rebel", and "New Orleanian Love Song". Next is Diaspora – a set that has Christian Scott really opening with a new sense of pride and power after adopting the Atunde Adjuah name – and blowing here not just on trumpet, but also "reverse flugelhorn", sirenette, and siren – and also using some sonic architecture to open up and expand his sound! Rhythms are a compelling mix of drum programs and acoustic percussion – peppered with work on alto, Fender Rhodes, bass, guitar, and drums – in this groove that's much more sharp-edged and sonically compelling than most other projects of this nature. Titles include "Lawless", "Our Lady Of New New Orleans", "IDK", "Desire & The Burning Girl", "Completely", "No Love", and "The Walk". Last is Emancipation Proclamation – part of Scott's brilliant trilogy that has him reworking his sound even more than before – using his horn in both acoustic and electric settings, and mixing with bits of funk and deeper musical currents – all at a level that's vaguely in the territory of Don Cherry in the 70s, but served up with a vibe that's very much Christian's own! Rather than be buried in the mix of percussion, Fender Rhodes, and other horns here – Scott seems to be set free, and really opens up with both the space of his solos, and the style of his phrasing – which is even more personal than before. The other players are great, too – a shifting lineup who retain the same bristling energy throughout – on titles that include "Ashes Of Our Forever", "The Emancipation Procrastination", "AvengHer", "Cages", "New Heroes", "Videotape", "The Cypher", "Michele With One L", and "Unrigging November". ✨✧ Eddie Shu/Bob HardawayJazz Practitioners ... LP
Bethlehem, 1954/1955. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
An excellent set that combines the work of two lost horn players from the 50s! The first 8 tracks feature titles from an earlier 10" recording by Eddie Shu – an icy genius on the alto and tenor, working here in quartet format with Bobby Scott, Vinnie Burke, and Roy Haynes. Shu's got an angular tone that's a bit like that of Lee Konitz, but which is slightly less acrobatic, and perhaps a bit warmer – and he's a hell of a player, as you'll hear on the tracks "Tom Dick & Jim", "It's Sand Man", "Justice", "On East Side", and "Peace". Side two features one of the only albums ever cut by tenorist Bob Hardaway – a young west coast player who really cooks on this obscure record for Bethlehem! Hardaway's tenor has a bit more bite than some other Bethlehem horns of the time – and the vibe is almost east coast at time – with a stronger attack on the solos, and a sense of soul that comes through even more strongly on the ballads. The lineup is great, too – with Marty Paich on piano, bringing a nice punch to the tunes – plus vibes from Larry Bunker on side one, ringing out with a really wonderful tone. Bunker shifts to drums on side two – and the record features bass from either Max Bennett or Joe Mondragon, and additional drums from Art Madigan. Titles include "Jr", "Lou's Blue", "Indiana", "I Cover The Waterfront", and "Out Of Nowhere". LP, Vinyl record album

The album cover is a bit of a Roy Ayers reference – and the set makes a key early use of the Ayers classic "We Live In Brooklyn" on the track "Home Sweet Home" – amidst other cuts that include "Wrekonize", "Timz N Hood Check", "Wrektime", "Wontime", "Sound Bwoy Bureill", "Shinin Next Sh*t", "Wipe Ya Mouf", "PNC", "Bucktown", and "Let's Git It On". Soft PowerRaw Bites ... LP
RR Gems (Estonia), 2023. New Copy ... $32.99 34.99
Soft Power follow up their previous set with a record that's maybe even more striking overall – a fantastic blend of spiritual jazz and electric elements – served up with some especially nice Fender Rhodes, and plenty more going on as well! The tunes build with a sense of majesty that's great – often really making a lot of the basswork of Iiro Tulkki, whose sense of sound establishes a great core to the record, as do the drums and percussion of Mikael Jurmu – a player who's got a nice edge, and occasionally gets additional percussion help on the set. Staffan Sodergard handles both Fender Rhodes and trumpet – in a lineup that also includes tenor from Esa Umberg, soprano and alto from Antti Vauhkonen, and guitar from Otto Kyrklund – on titles that include "War Setib", "Raw Bites", "Doom", "Riff", "Duke", "Kesam", and "Archie". Red (Italy), 1986. Used ... Out Of Stock
A killer combo – caught live, and playing some nicely extended tracks that really let all players do their thing! Sphere's in top formation here – snapping along with great rhythms from Kenny Barron on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Ben Riley on drums – and getting some wickedly sharp tenor help from Charlie Rouse – who blows here both with some of the modern edges forged during his years with Monk, and some of the deeper soul he picked up in later stretches. Barron's piano is sharper than usual too – still with some of the lyricism we know from his own records, but a bit more bite overall – definitely a great match for Rouse's horn. Titles include "Pumpkins Delight", "Saud's Song", "Christina", "Tokudo", and "Deceptakon". CD

✨✧ Hiromasa SuzukiRock Joint Biwa – Kumikyoku Fulukotofumi ... LP
Sony/Cinedelic (Italy), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really majestic album from Japanese keyboardist Hiromasa Suzuki – a set that maybe takes inspiration from the progressive side of the rock spectrum at the time, but which delivers the goods with a style that's definitely jazz all the way through! Suzuki plays both acoustic piano and electric, and with guitar from Kiyoshi Sugimoto in the group, there's definitely an electric vibe – but one that's offset by the sax work of Takeru Muraoka, trumpet of Takehisa Suzuki, and trombone of Tadataka Nakazawa! There's also work from the ancient biwa instrument from Japan, name-checked in the title – although the soaring quality of the other instrumentation really takes over at most points. Titles include "Ame No Iwayado", "Ashiharashiko", "Kamuyamatoiwarehiko", "Watatsumi No Irokonomiya", and "Yamatoshi Uruwashi". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Masayuki TakayanagiLonely Woman ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pretty darn beautiful album of solo guitar tracks – recorded in 1982 by Japanese musician Masayuki Takayanagi, and featuring only electric guitar, played with a spare raspy edge – recorded in a rough style that's quite unusual for a Japanese jazz session of the time! However, it's this style of recording that really brings out the best of the album – as the complicated stylings of Takayanagi ring out with a much more honest sound than you'd expect on an album of this nature – reminding us more of earlier work by Lee Konitz collaborator Billy Bauer than most of the late 70s guitar heroes from Japan! The sound is beautiful throughout – and titles include a version of Charlie Haden's "Song For Che", a reading of Lennie Tristano's "Lennie's Pennies", and a great version of Ornette's "Lonely Woman". Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Masayuki "Jojo" Takayanagi takes things back to basics with his Second Concept here – playing in a style that's straighter and more swinging than some of his avant work of the 70s – yet at a level that's equally compelling too! Given that he went outside a heck of a lot on previous records, Takayanagi definitely has a touch here that's informed by the farther reaches of the electric guitar in jazz – yet he applies his inventive tones and phrasings to a more conventional setting with help from Kenji Kohsei on piano, Nobuyoshi Ino on bass, and Yasuhiro Yamazaki on drums – in a mode that almost recalls some of the more inventive mix of tones and rhythms from the Lee Konitz generation of the 50s, yet served up in a more contemporary mode overall. No surprise, the set features versions of Konitz-school classics like "Palo Alto", "Lennie's Pennies", and "317 East 32nd" – plus original material that includes "Froggy Day", "These Things", and "My New Flame". CD features four bonus alternate takes too! CD

Sweet synth soul from 80s Nigeria – a set that definitely shows the evolution of that country's sound in the decade after the rise of Afro Funk – and a record that also delivers plenty of the beats promised in the title! There's lots of elements here borrowed from electro – drum machine rhythms, tight basslines, and plenty of keyboards – all percolating nicely next to the rougher-edged vocals of Nkono Teles – a singer who does an equally great job of delivering a catchy hit and a more seductive number. Touches of highlife filter into the mix here and there, but still in an electro-tinged way – and titles include "Be My Lady", "Party Beats", "Time For Fun", "Love Vibration", and "Highlife Makossa". Pete TownshendWho Came First ... LP
Track, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic first album from Pete Townshend – one that showed the world that he was a hell of a force to be reckoned with, even away from The Who! There's some elements here that link back to Pete's work with the band, but the music here is already showing lots of new ideas brewing in his solo space – some of the greater sensitivity of Townshend's solo voice – which might not always get showcased when Roger Daltrey was taking the lead – and also some different musical strands that might not have been right for The Who. Ronnie Lane takes the lead on "Evolution" – which you'll recognize from the world of The Faces – and other titles include the original acoustic version of "Pure & Easy", plus "Nothing Is Everything (Let's See Action)", "Time Is Passing", "Forever's No Time At All", "There's A Heartache Following Me", "Content", "Parvardigar", and "Sheraton Gibson". Lennie TristanoLennie Tristano – Personal Recordings 1946 to 1970 (6CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, Late 40s/1950s/1960s. New Copy 6CD ... $99.99
An incredible collection of music from the great pianist Lennie Tristano – and maybe the first-ever set to truly get at the range of genius he could express on the piano! Given that Tristano only made a small amount of records during his too-short career, yet also left a major impact on the field of modern jazz – this set really documents the full span of everything that Tristano had to offer – pulled from a wonderful range of his own recordings, all of which appear here for the first time! These aren't casual solo recordings done in the basement – and instead, the package brings together a mixture of studio, live, and even television performances – all with a different spirit on each of the CDs in the set! One of the most revelatory is the final CD – which features a number of tracks in a "free session" in 1948 - with Tristano on piano, Lee Konitz on alto, Warne Marsh on tenor, and Billy Bauer on guitar – coming together with an amazing sound throughout. That same disc also features a superb 1962 live date at the Half Note – with Konitz on alto and Zoot Sims on tenor. CD1 is wonderful too – a selection of live material with the tremendous Billy Bauer on piano – a player, like Tristano, who was instrumental in shaping the sound of his instrument in modern jazz during the postwar years. CD3 features live performances by a sextet that includes Konitz, Marsh, and Bauer – plus Arnold Fishkin on bass and Jeff Morton on drums. CD2 features beautiful solo performances recorded from the early 50s through 1970. CD4 features trio session, most with Peter Ind on bass – while CD5 features different trio and duo material, but with Sonny Dallas on bass. The set is impeccably done – in cooperation with Tristano's family – and given the wealth of material, the whole thing may well have doubled his recording catalog in the process, while also really illuminating so many different aspects of his career! Atlantic, 1955/1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A double-length set of work from one of the greatest pianists of the 50s – both of his Atlantic albums together on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Lennie Tristano, from 1955 – darkly imaginative work from the great Tristano – and one of the few full albums he ever cut as a leader! The record features the incredible track "Turkish Mambo" – which has Tristano overdubbed 3 times in this dark modal way that's totally amazing, and which will hook you into his playing immediately! A number of other tracks feature a quartet with Lee Konitz – always a good match for Tristano – and a few others have a great trio that's completed by Peter Ind and Jeff Morton. Tracks include "Requiem", "East 32nd", "You Go To My Head", and "Line Up". New Tristano is an incredible record by Lennie – one that features him playing solo piano, but in a way that's so inventive, so creative, so pyrotechnic, that Atlantic Records had to include text on the back cover saying "No use is made of multi-tracking, over-dubbing, or tape-speeding." The album's also one of the last (the last?) that Lennie ever cut – and although many other players are kind of faltering in last sessions like this, Lennie's sounding better than ever – ready to take on a realm of new challenges in the 60s. Titles include "Love Lines", "G Minor Complex", "Becoming", and "Deliberation". CD

Definitive (Spain), Late 40s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Amazing early work from Lennie Tristano – and proof that he'd developed all of his modernist ideals firmly in the years before his birth of the cool fame. The tracks are from obscure sources, and most likely appeared on 78 rpm records – and the dates given range from 1946 to 1949. Players include all the likely suspects – like Billy Bauer, Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, and others – and although the recording quality isn't always excellent, the conception is, and the CD is perhaps one of the best on the market to give a clear picture of Tristano's true genius! There's a total of 26 cuts in all – including "Disgression", "Out On A Limb", "Interlude", "Blues", "Atonement", "Supersonic", and "On A Planet". CD
