✨✧ Arto Lindsay/Joe McPhee/Ken Vandermark/Phil SudderbergLargest Afternoon ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2019. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A set that's brimming over with improvising jazz talent – but one that's an especially great reminder of the guitar genius of the great Arto Lindsay! Lindsay is amazing here – playing with energy to match the brilliance of Ken Vandermark and Joe McPhee – which is really saying a lot, and which has us almost feeling like a younger version of Arto's self stepped forward straight from the New York no wave scene, in order to create a pan-historical bridge with the improvising strengths of the Corbett Vs Dempsey universe! Drummer Phil Sudderberg is wonderful too – a master of sounds and moments – and the short tracks allow for plenty of sharp changes, and shifts in energy between each selection. McPhee blows alto, tenor, and pocket trumpet – and Vandermark is on tenor, baritone, and clarinet – on titles that include "The Push & Pull Beneath The Surface", "She Must Have Known", "Whether You Were There Or Not", "When I Lose Any Sense Of Perspective", and "The World's Longest Afternoon". ✨✧ Joe McPheeNation Time – The Complete Recordings (Nation Time/Black Magic Man/Nation Time Preview/rare tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, Early 70s. Used 4 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tremendous look at the early years of the legendary Joe McPhee – a set that's based around his classic Nation Time album, and which features other live material from the same time – including a Hat Hut album, and two CDs' worth of previously unissued work! The core album is legendary – a gritty set that features a mighty funky drummer, and some of the most soulful work that Joe ever recorded. Joe plays tenor and trumpet in sweet lineup that features bubbling organ, vamping rhythms, and some sweet modal elements mixed together in percussion, guitar, and Fender Rhodes. Titles include the hard wailing "Nation Time" – plus "Shakey Jake", an excellent 13 minute funk number – and the moodier "Scorpio's Dance". Next is the searing Black Magic Man album – an early release on the Hat Hut label, but recorded during the same December 1970 performance as Nation Time – almost showing the bolder, freer sound of the group – but still coming across with some surprising soulful elements too. The original album is expanded by the addition of the unreleased "Song For Lauren" alternate takes – and the core record includes "Black Magic Man", "Hymn Of The Dragon Kings", and "Song For Lauren". The next two CDs feature material recorded in 1969 and 1970 – at Vassar and in Poughkeepsie – with Joe and group working through some similar spiritual and soul jazz territory as on the Vassar CD issue from the same label. The music is heavy on elements you'd hear from the Nation Time album – Hammond, guitar, and even some electric bass and vibes – used in styles that run from soul jazz, to modal, to more experimental – all on very long tracks that have McPhee really stretching out on tenor and trumpet! Titles include "Cold Sweat", "Breakaway Theme", "Untitled", "Nation Time", "Sunshower", "Spring Street", and "Contemplation". All 4CDs come in very cool LP sleeves, in a slipcover box, a 60 page booklet of notes, photos, and information on the music! CD

✨✧ Joe McPhee & Jon ButcherAt The Hill Of James Magee ... CD
Trost (Austria), 2019. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two fantastic saxophonists, recorded together in Texas with a very echoey vibe – in a space that we think is the image pictured in the cover! Even if Joe McPhee and Jon Butcher aren't playing in an abandoned house in the desert, they still sound pretty darn amazing – Joe on alto, John on tenor – both crafting these spacious, open lines that are dripping with soul – and delivered in a way that often has one player creating more non-melodic sounds, while the other hangs in more tuneful, spiritual territory. The lack of any other instrumentation is wonderful – and the recording quality captures all the subtle shifts in sound texture and shape – on titles that include "Mine Shaft", "Sometimes Yes Sometimes No", "Paradise Overcast", and "A Forty Foot Square Room". ✨✧ Joe McPhee Survival Unit IIIDon't Postpone Joy! ... CD
Rai Trade (Italy), 2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A set that shows the strong relation Joe McPhee has had with the Chicago scene in the past decade or so – a live date recorded in Italy, but featuring Joe in the company of Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and Michael Zerang on percussion! The recording has a very loose, open feel – very much concerned with sound, and not just from McPhee's tenor sax and pocket trumpet, but also from the instruments of Lonberg-Holm and Zerang, which are recorded here with a really tremendous sound. The percussion is especially clear – coming through with a great sense of texture that really grounds the record, and lets Joe get a bit free at points. Titles include "Variations On Nation Time", "Variations On Remembrance", "Variations On Harriett", and "Feather Exchange". CD

✨✧ Joe McPhee/Fred Lonberg-HolmNo Time Left For Sadness ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2019. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first-ever set of duets between Joe McPhee and Fred Lonberg-Holm – two players who've improvised often in other settings on the Chicago scene over the years – but who somehow never had the time to take off like this on their own! Fred's working at his highest level of sonic intensity here – both on cello and on electronics – and McPhee continues to blow us away as the years go on – opening up here on tenor in ways that maybe make even his early classics seem tame by comparison – showing a tremendous understanding of his instrument and all its many sonic possibilities, and in ways that aren't just about pure power, but about an honest, open, human sort of sympathy that fits the situation. the album features three long tracks, all improvised – "That Time", "This Time", and "Next Time". ✨✧ Joe McPhee/Ken Vandermark/Kent KesslerMeeting In Chicago ... CD
Okka Disk, 1998. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A seminal early set on the Okka Disk label – the important Chicago avant imprint who began documenting an important stretch of the career of Joe McPhee – much as the Hat Hut label had begun 20 years before! The set features performances recorded during McPhee's first appearance in Chicago during the mid 90s – the start of a beautiful relationship that would continue for decades to come – and McPhee blows both reeds and trumpet, in a trio with Ken Vandermark on saxes and Kent Kessler on bass – all working together in a very open studio format that has the players shifting between trio work, to solo and duo performances too. The recording is crucial – as McPhee's sensitivity brings out a whole new side of both Chicago players – on titles that include "Heart Of The Matter", "A Meeting In Chicago", "Breakneck Ridge", "Lalibela", "Empty Bottle Blues", "Fourteen Years Later", and "I Leave You Love". ✨✧ Susan Alcorn/Joe McPhee/Ken VandermarkInvitation To A Dream ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2019. Used ... Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from three great improvisers – two of whom we've known and loved for years, one of whom we're just beginning to discover! The trio features Ken Vandermark on tenor and clarinet, Joe McPhee on soprano sax and pocket trumpet, and Susan Alcorn on pedal steel guitar – the last of which is an instrument that's used in very different, very unconventional ways – more like a subtle sonic element, but still with some musical qualities – which then seems to create the same sort of balance in McPhee and Vandermark, both of whom are more fragile, more sensitive here than we've heard them in years! There's still a few more fully-blown passages, but the real beauty of the record lies in the more subtle sonic interplay, which is magical throughout. Titles include "Invitation To A Dream", "The Eyes Of Memory", "Rise & Rise", "Every Season Has Its Reason", and "I Am Because You Are". CD

✨✧ Decoy & Joe McPheeSpontaneous Combustion (with bonus CD) ... CD
OTOroku (UK), 2013. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Joe McPhee plays here with a Hammond organ trio – a setting that partially gets him back to the soulful sound of his roots, but which still keeps things in the freer mode of later years too! Joe starts out the performance with some wonderful solo work on pocket trumpet – played with these offbeat notes and inventive phrasing that might only be matched by Don Cherry's work on the instrument. The drums from Steve Noble come into the mix slowly, while the Hammond from Alexander Hawkins rolls in on these bold waves of sound – almost more forceful than any organ player of the headiest 70s years – spurred on by some rolling bass from John Edwards. Hammond dominates for the rest of side one – but then Joe switches to tenor, and gets some intimate, soulful space – before the organ comes rolling into the mix again! The 2CD set includes the 37+ minute "Spontaneous Combustion" on Disc One and the more than twice as long (77+ minutes) "Spontaneous Combustion 2" on Disc Two! CD

✨✧ Daunik Lazro/Joe McPhee/Joshua Abrams/Guillaume Seguron/Chad TaylorPride Of Lions – Bridge Sessions 08 ... CD
Bridge Sessions (France), 2018. Used ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from a trans-Atlantic group – one that features really beautiful work on saxes from Daunik Lazro, in one of his best settings in many years! All the other musicians here are fantastic – as in addition to Daunik on tenor and baritone, the rest of the group features Joe McPhee on tenor and pocket trumpet, Joshua Abrams on bass and guembri, Guillaume Seguron on bass as well, and Chad Taylor on drums and mbira! Given the use of the double basses, there's a strong bottom end here – and that's perfect for those organic tones that we've always loved from Lazro's horn, since first discovering him in the 80s – a very different trajectory of improvisation than some of his European contemporaries, with a quality that seems to bring out more from McPhee as well. Taylor just keeps exploding with his talents in recent years, and is a perfect partner for the music here – and all the tracks are improvised, save for a snippet of Albert Ayler's "Mothers" which appears at one spot. Clean Feed (Portugal), 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
The title really gets things right here – as Joe McPhee is in some of his most sonic territory – really working sometimes at a level that's way beyond music, yet still managing to bring a strong sense of soul to the set too! The album begins with "Episode One", dedicated to Don Cherry – and really featuring some incredible pocket trumpet work from McPhee – blown at a level that's very subtle in shape and texture, but which gains power as the track moves on. "Episode Two" is dedicated to Ornette Coleman, and features much more dynamic alto sax – handled at a level that's more tenor-like than Coleman ever would have done – with a free-flowing vibe that's really wonderful! ✨✧ Joe McPheeTenor & Fallen Angels ... CD
Hatology (Switzerland), 1976/1977. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A mindblowingly beautiful set of solo tenor tracks by Joe McPhee – a record that's almost as important to that instrument as Anthony Braxton's For Alto set was for the alto sax! The record features just Joe blowing, and nothing else – stretching out in open space, and slowly exploring his tone and sound with a confidence and creative energy that's totally great. The sound is never too far out, and one thing we really appreciate is Joe's sense of timing here – almost a bit of a swing in some of the tracks, even though there's no other instrumentation backing him up. Yet that quality also doesn't hold him back from really reaching out, either – and there's a tonal quality to the solos that's really beautiful – like Sonny Rollins at his 60s creative best, but even more unfettered. Titles include "Knox", "Sweet Drago", "Good Bye Tom B", and "Tenor". CD adds in the bonus track "Fallen Angels" – also solo, but much rawer, and recorded a year after the main album. CD

✨✧ Joe McPheeTrinity ... CD
Unheard Music Series/Atavistic, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Joe McPhee's strongest early albums – and a real breakthrough from his sound on Nation Time (also issued as part of the Unheard Music Series.) The group here is a trio – with Mike Kull on electric and acoustic piano, and Harold E Smith on percussion – and the lack of a bass player gives the group an incredible sense of freedom, letting them wail away on long tracks with a strong bent for musical and spatial exploration. The two most marked examples of this are "Astral Spirits" and "Delta" – both searching numbers that start with an electric piano/tenor sound that you might have heard on a Joe Henderson album on Milestone from the same time, but which take that sound to unheard of limits, pushing the keys and the sax to full capacity. The album also includes the longer track "Ionization", which is a fiercely jamming number with a slightly straighter bent. CD

✨✧ Joe McPheeUnderground Railroad/Live At Holy Cross Monastery ... CD
Atavistic/Unheard Music Series, Late 60s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The long-awaited (and much needed) reissue of Joe McPhee's first record – recorded at Holy Cross Monastery in New York in 1969, and originally only issued in a small number of copies. Even at this early stage, Joe's showing a strong musical vision, working in a style that moves off the New York avant scene of the 60s – but which also shows traces of the spiritual exploration to come in the 70s. Joe plays trumpet, pocket cornet, and tenor – and the rest of the group features Reggie Marks on saxes, Tyrone Crabb on bass, and Ernest Bostic on drums and vibes. Six months before that gig, the same group performed at Holy Cross – recorded, but never issued until now. This great 2CD set brings together the 1968 and 1969 recordings – for a package of 5 long tracks that include "New Spiritual No 1", "Underground Railroad", "Harriet", "E=MC2", and "Message From Denmark". ✨✧ Joe McPhee & Andre JaumeNuclear Family ... CD
Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1979. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Insanely beautiful work from the great Joe McPhee – an album that was recorded and intended to be issued during his groundbreaking stretch with Hat Art Records – but which never saw the light of day at the time! Why that happened, we're not entirely sure – because the album is tremendous right from the very first note – as McPhee blows alto, tenor, and pocket cornet alongside the work of Andre Jaume on alto, tenor, and bass clarinet – in a set of horn-only performances that are breathtaking from start to finish! Jaume's a great player too – and his work of the time, especially on Hat Art, is a masterpiece of subtlety and soul – and he balances McPhee perfectly here, often with some deeper currents that create a beautifully organic energy between the two. Jaume's got this way of handling his reed that's amazing – and, of course, Joe's phrasing is as incredible as always. Titles include great reworks of modern jazz classics – including "Pithecanthropus Erectus", "Self Portrait In Three Colors", "Evidence", "Chelsea Bridge", and "Lonely Woman" – plus the originals "Nuclear" and "Rue St Jaume". ✨✧ Joe McPhee with Clifford ThorntonSurvival Unit II ... CD
Hatology (Switzerland), 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
Searing early work from Joe McPhee – quite possibly his hardest-hitting recording of the 70s, even if the material wasn't properly issued until 25 years later! The performance was done for radio station WBAI in New York – and it features McPhee, Clifford Thornton, and Byron Morris coming together in an experimental setting that also includes some earlier taped performances by McPhee alongside the live work by the group! There's an energy here that rivals the most aggressive avant work on Impulse Records at its best – a soaring, righteous sound that's got an undercurrent of social change and politics, as you'd find in classics by Archie Shepp or Marion Brown. The remaining members of the group include Mike Kull on piano and Harold E Smith on percussion, and McPhee plays trumpet as well as tenor – on titles that include "Black Magic Man", "Nation Time", "Song For Lauren", "Message From Denmark", "Harriet", and "The Looking Glass 1". Aerophonic, 2020. Used ... Out Of Stock
The title's a reference to place once referenced by Edgar Allan Poe – but the music is very firmly grounded in reality, and comes from an improvised performance in Chicago by this very all-star ensemble! The album features really creative interplay between a quintet that features Joe McPhee on tenor and pocket trumpet, Dave Rempis on alto, tenor, and baritone, Tomeka Reid on cello, Brandon Lopez on bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums – all coming together in the best tradition of Windy City free jazz players working with key out of town talent! The blend of bass and cello at the heart of the music is really wonderful, and Paal makes sure to only step forward boldly when McPhee and Rempis are ready to let loose themselves – and the trio really balance the power of their expressions to make sure that Reid and Lopez get a chance to shape some more sensitive moments. McPhee and Rempis are a great pair – very sympathetic to each other, yet very distinct too – as you'll hear on the long improvised tracks, "Osel", "Kaali", "Smola", and "Hekla". CD

We haven't heard the players duet since their mid 00s release on Okka Disk – and this set shows an even more sympathetic meeting of minds – long tracks that slowly build and find a sonic space that's just perfect – rolling out with the kind of organic energy that Joe brought to his classic work of the late 70s, and which Parker has really reached in his own music of the past decade or two. The set features three long tracks, very improvised – with the titles "What", "If", and "They Both Could Fly". CD

An album inspired by the legendary John Coltrane album Live At The Village Vanguard Again – but a set that takes off in very individual directions, thanks to the spirit of the players! The group's led by pianist Jamie Saft – who's drawing strong energy from Alice Coltrane on the record – especially in the way he effortlessly lays out these dark lines that have a calming presence amidst the more ferocious horn work from Joe McPhee on alto and tenor – that balance that both Mr and Mrs Coltrane could share at their best. Joe Morris provides some of the rounded, most soulful bass we've heard in years – and drums are by Charles Downs, who easily leaps between free moments and bolder rhythmic progressions. Titles include "Beyond Days", "Simplicity Of Man", "Leaves Of Certain", and "A Backward King". CD

Breathily-blown brilliance from tenor saxophonist Rodrigo Amado – working here in a very well-matched frontline that features the mighty Joe McPhee on pocket trumpet and soprano sax – both instruments he uses with a deftness that takes us back to is early albums on Hat Hut! Both musicians have this great sense of texture – an almost-earthy vibe at times, which is certainly echoed by the deep-toned bass work of Kent Kessler – a player we don't hear from as much as we used to, but who makes a really strong appearance here, especially when balancing out some of the freer moments on drums from Chris Corsano. Both McPhee and Amado sometimes have very close-up, almost mouthy elements to their music at points – and titles include "Wild Flowers", "The Hiddend Desert", "Legacies", and "A History Of Nothing". The title here is very apt – as this fantastic quartet seem to set a different kind of fire on every one of the CDs in the set – six different performances, recorded over the space of two months – in Paris, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Poland! The group should be well-known to lovers of improvised music from earlier Okka Disk recordings in the 90s – and the passage of two decades has only made them sharper and more intense – especially when the tenor and pocket trumpet of Joe McPhee joins the lineup of Ken Vandermark on reeds, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums. The set of recordings is dedicated to James Baldwin – which you might have guessed from the title – and the whole thing is a fitting tribute to the transformation of ideas about freedom and identity over the passage of time. A late 90s record, but one that we might easily put next to similar spiritual improv albums from the 70s – a fantastic meeting of both artists at Chicago's Empty Bottle – with Joe McPhee on pocket trumpet and tenor, and Hamid Drake on some amazing drums and percussion! Drake's wonderfully open, fluid sense of sound is a great match for McPhee here – really opening up a side of Joe's music in a way that's a bit different than some of his other recordings of the time, including his Okka Disk material – spirited, but never stressed – exploratory, yet always with a strong sense of direction. Titles include "Hate Crime Cries", "Cries & Whispers", "Mother Africa", and "Emancipation Proclamation". The players have an instant sympathy with each other – so much so that space and timing are as important as the sounds that emerge from either player – a really sensitive balance that reflects all the great elements that Bishop was bringing to his music at the time, and which seems to take McPhee back to some of the genius of his earliest records too! Some of the hippest jazz ever played at Vassar College – and previously-unreleased work from avant legend Joe McPhee, recorded right around the same time as his classic Nation Time record! One CD features a smoking performance by McPhee on tenor – working with a group that also includes Byron Morris on alto sax – really stretching out on a mixture of original tunes and some surprisingly free takes on standards – familiar songs blown openly, almost with a Coltrane Quartet sort of approach! But the other CD is even more amazing – and even more obscure – as it features a group with vibist Ernie Bostic, alto saxophonist Otis Greene, and Hammond player Herbie Leaman – all musicians we really don't know at all – but who sound wonderful together! The mix of organ and vibes is completely sublime – and tracks are very long and airy, with a haunting feel that's unlike anything we've ever heard before. The Bostic group plays "Flowers For Mattie B", "Bag's Groove", and "Resolution" – and McPhee's combo takes on "Green Dolphin Street", "Spring Street", "Muntu", "Maybell's Blues", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and "Stella By Starlight". An important early record from the Thing trio of reedman Mats Gustafsson – and one that already has the group taking off from their initial mandate of working with Don Cherry material, as Joe McPhee joins the group and really opens up their sound! McPhee echoes a bit of Cherry on pocket trumpet, but the performance is definitely in his own mode, and that special sonic space of Gustafsson at the turn of the century – as Mats plays tenor and baritone saxes, alongside Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass and Paal Nilssen Love on drums! The core trio would go onto greatness in years to come, and this is one of their key early statements – with titles that include versions of Don Cherry's "The Thing", Ornette Coleman's "Kathelin Gray", and Frank Lowe's "For Real" – plus the tracks "To Bring You My Love", "Going Home", and "Old Eyes". This lost bit of work was recorded live in St Louis in 1973 – part of the Black Artists Group scene that was the city's answer to Chicago's AACM movement of the late 60s. Alto player Luther Thomas heads up the group, which features Charles Shaw on drums, JD Parran on reeds, Marvin Horne on guitar, Eric Foreman on bass – plus guest work from AACM visitors Joseph and Lester Bowie! The set kicks off with the 18 minute monster track "Funky Donkey" – an unbridled funky jam that mixes tight fast rhythms with skilled way-out solos, very much in the mode of "Nation Time" from Joe McPhee's album of similar vintage. The cut's a stone monster – and it's backed here by "Una New York" and "Intensity", which has a more avant feel, but an equally exciting mix of styles. CD

Vandermark 5Free Jazz Classics Vol 1 & 2 ... CD
Atavistic, 2002. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
One of the greatest things about Ken Vandermark – and one of the reasons why we think he's one of our favorite players in the Chicago underground – is the way that he's completely open about his roots and influences, never failing to give credit where credit is due, and let folks know about the music that's inspired him over the years. And although Ken's recorded more than a few tracks by these influences on his own albums in years past, this set goes that one better – by acting as a 2CD set that's almost a "primer" in avant jazz of the late 20th century. There's a great batch of material on the set – works by Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton, Lester Bowie, Joe McPhee, Sun Ra, Don Cherry, Frank Wright, Archie Shepp, and others – all recorded live at Chicago's Empty Bottle, by a very well-honed Vandermark 5. Titles include "Saturn", "Goodbye Tom B", "Happy House", "69L", "Wherever Junebugs Go", "King Korn", "The Earth", and "Scootin About". CD

✨✧ Moor MotherJazz Codes ... CD
Anti, 2022. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Moor Mother's an artist who just keeps on getting more and more interesting with each new release – definitely in a genre that's completely her own – one that lives up to the spirit of west coast underground pioneers in recent decades – and, as with those artists, seemingly finds a sonic space that none of us knew existed! Under her real name, Camae Ayewa, Moor Mother has roots in musical education in the world of higher learning – and here, she's managed to draw together many strands of that experience into a voice that's not only all her own, but completely organic and laidback too – a mixture of hip hop, soul, spoken word, and some of the jazzier currents promised in the title. Nearly every single track features a collaboration – artists include Nicole Mitchell, Melanie Charles, Jason Moran, Wolf Weston, and many others – and titles include "Woody Shaw", "Ode To Mary", "Umzansi", "Golden Lady", "Blame", "Blues Away", "Dust Together", "Arms Save", "Barely Woke", "Rap Jasm", and "Joe McPhee Nation Time Intro". ✨✧ Peter BrotzmannChicago Octet/Tentet (3CD set) ... CD
Okka Disk, 1998. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest releases ever from the Okka Disk label – a legendary set that stands as a great testament to the global improvising scene that exploded in Chicago during the 90s! Back in the early years of FMP, nobody would have thought to use the name "Peter Brotzmann" and "Chicago" in the same context – but by the time of these recordings, the legendary reedman had been spending quite a bit of time in the Windy City – working strongly alongside that decade's fresh generation of improvisers, at a level that also helped Brotzmann discover new energy in his music too! The lineup here is great – both octet and tentet groups that operate in an improvising orchestra tradition – with players that include Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Mars Williams on tenor and alto, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Mats Gustafsson on baritone and fluteophone, Joe McPhee on pocket cornet and valve trombone, Fred Lonberg Holm on cello, Kent Kessler on bass, Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion, and Brotzmann himself on tenor, clarinet, and tarogato. The set features three different live recordings, and one long studio set recorded over two days – a fantastic collection of music. Titles include "Burning Spirit (For Kazuka Shiraishi)", "Other Brothers", "Old Bottles No Wine, "Aziz", "Foolish Infinity", "Immediate Music", "Makapoor", "Foolish Infinity", "Other Brothers" and "Divide By Zero". Trost (Austria), 2011. Used 5 CDs ... Out Of Stock
An amazing document of a unique musical moment – an entire jazz festival, virtually dedicated to Peter Brotzmann himself! The legendary Brotzmann not only curated the festival – filling it with some of his key collaborators and musical contemporaries – but he also plays on a fair bit of the titles here, too – in different groupings that reflect not only his long history in the European avant scene, but also his ties to Chicago, and his work with Japanese improvisers too! The package is wonderful – the next best thing to being at this exclusive event in person – and the set features 5CDs worth of music from the festival, with performances by Sonore (with Brotzmann, Ken Vandermark, & Mats Gustafsson), Chicago Tentet with John Tchicai, solo work by Jeiji Haino, the Hairy Bones quartet with Brotzmann and Toshinori Kondo, the Full Blast Trio, the DKV Trio, Caspar Brotzmann Massaker, and various other groupings with players who include Jeb Bishop, Joe McPhee, Mars Williams, Jason Adasiewicz, Nasheet Waits, Masahiko Satoh, Bill Laswell, and many others. Okka Disk, 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
There's nothing broken about this set – as the album's one of the strongest, most spiritual sessions we've ever heard from the Chicago Tentet of Peter Brotzmann – a really great group who gave us some amazing albums on the Okka Disk label! The set features two great guests – trumpeter Roy Campell and bassist William Parker – and at some level, the rest of the lineup seem to be opening up into modes that welcome the territory of both jazz giants – especially on the long first track, which is a very different reworking of a composition the group explored on another album! As usual, reedman Peter Brotzmann is at the helm – on tenor, alto clarinet, and tarogato – with Ken Vandermark, Mars Williams, and Mats Gustafsson on other reeds – plus Joe McPhee on trumpet and valve trombone, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and violin, Kent Kessler on bass, Michael Zerang on drums, and Hamid Drake on drums and frame drum, plus some great vocalizations. Titles include "Stonewater" and "Broken English". CD

✨✧ Rodrigo AmadoLet The Free Be Men ... CD
Trost (Austria), 2021. Used ... Out Of Stock
A set with two strong horn players upfront – but one that draws some equally fantastic energy from the bottom end of the group too – thanks to wonderful contributions from Kent Kessler on bass and Chris Corsano on drums! The musical qualities of tenorist Rodrigo Amado seem to just deepen more and more with each new release – there's a sense of soul here we might not have heard this strongly a few years before, one that really matches the work on the record from Joe McPhee – who blows soprano sax, pocket trumpet, and even a bit of pvc pipe – the last with that special sort of magic that's continued to make Joe such a vibrant player over the years. But we're also equally moved here by the basswork of Kent Kessler – who's got this way of matching his strengths with openness, at a level that's really echoed by the drums of Corsano – a mixture of boldness and sensitivity that's really wonderful. All tracks are long improvisations, recorded in Copehagen – and titles include "Resist", "Let The Free Be Men", "Never Surrender", and "Men Is Woman Is Man". CD

Okka Disk, 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
A 10th Anniversary performance by the Chicago Tentet – a wonderful group that's become the fruitful union of saxophonist Peter Brotzmann with a younger generation of players who were working heavily on the Chicago scene at the time! Back when the group first started, it was something of an experiment – but over the following decade, the ensemble won great attention for their playing, and for good reason too – considering the solo contributions of players like Ken Vandermark and Mats Gustafsson on reeds, Joe McPhee on trumpet and tenor, Johannes Bauer on trombone, Kent Kessler on bass, and Paal Nilssen Love on drums – all working under the visionary leadership of Peter Brotzmann! The tracks are all somewhat long and open-ended – almost more spacious than on other Chicago Tentet records, with a freely improvised feel. Titles include "Ten By Ten", "Little By Little", and "Step By Step". CD

Clean Feed (Portugal), 2012. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful record that not only shows how great the basswork of Ingebrigt Haker Flaten can be – but also what a great collaborator he is in an improvised setting! We've loved other albums from Flaten, but somehow this one really feels like a cut above – bass lines that have these incredibly powerful moments, with just the force of a few low notes – mixed with instrumentation from a well-chosen quartet lineup of Joe Morris on guitar, Joe McPhee on tenor, and Nate Wooley on trumpet! The horns seem to take off to the skies at some points, really let loose – but other times really seem to feel the sonic setting provided by Ingebrigt, as they slowly move to add in their own textures. Morris is nicely restrained at some moments – and titles include "Pent", "Times", "Port", "Giants", "Knicks", "Rangers", and "As If". CD

A bold statement from the Free Music Ensemble – not a large group, but instead a searing power trio that features Ken Vandermark on reeds, Nate McBride on bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums! The group work in a full-on mode that recalls the early power of the FMP scene, or some of the most striking work on ESP from the 60s – but given Vandermark's influence, they've also got a more open sensibility – clear in the shift from passage to passage of the album's numbered tracks, dedicated to influential heroes that include Peter Brotzmann, Paul Lytton, Joe Morris, and Joe McPhee – all contemporary heroes that are given great due here, but in a way that still has the trio retaining a very strong identity of their own.
