✨✧ Aretha FranklinYoung, Gifted, & Black ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful album that perfectly mixes both sides of Aretha Franklin's talents – the hard-edged soul singer who first flourished at Atlantic records in the late 60s, and the artist who was growing even more as a vocalist – really reaching out her wings to more sophisticated material! There's a balance here that makes the record one of the deepest that Franklin ever recorded for Atlantic – lots of larger Arif Mardin touches, but also some raw moments that really round things out – on titles that include Aretha's classic take on the Weldon Irvine/Nina Simone tune "Young Gifted & Black", the funky classic "Rock Steady", the wonderful mellow groover "Day Dreaming", the hit "Brand New Me", and the strangely compelling "First Snow In Kokomo" – plus other titles that include "All The King's Horses", "Oh Me Oh My", "Border Song", "Didn't I Blow Your Mind", "April Fools", "I've Been Loving You Too Long", and "The Long & Winding Road". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original 1841 Broadway label pressing. Vinyl plays with a clickon the last 2 songs on side 1. Cover has light wear & a bent corner.)

✨✧ Esther PhillipsCountry Side Of Esther Phillips ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark album – not only for Esther Phillips, who's emerging here as a gifted young lady, very different from her R&B years, but also for the genre of country soul, which was emerging to be one of the most important strands in the new music during the 60s. Esther's not fooling around here – as she's working with Nashville arranger Cliff Parman, and getting backup from the Anita Kerr singers for that true Music City sound. Sounds hokey, sounds like it shouldn't work – but the setting is perfect for Esther's raspy rich tone, and in a way, it forces her to break out even more vocally than she does on other 60s recordings. Titles include "Release me", "I'd Fight The World", "Am I That Easy To Forget", "I Really Don't Want To Know", "Just Out Of Reach", and "Be Honest With Me". A wonderful album – one that sits perfectly next to work by Solomon Burke, Ray Charles, and Brook Benton. LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo blue & green label pressing. Cover has surface & edge wear, clear tape on all seams, hype sticker, cutout notch.)

✨✧ Joe BataanSingin' Some Soul ... LP
Fania, 1972. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
One of the most soulful records ever recorded by Joe Bataan – a sweet blend of harmony soul and east coast styles, done in a mode that's a bit less Latin than some of his earlier records – but really wonderful overall! The style here is almost late 60s Philly soul – particularly that of the Intruders, O'Jays, or other harmony-heavy groups – and the production has a rootsy edge that really gets at the honesty in Joe's approach. And given Joe's wonderful approach to these heartfelt tunes, we hardly miss the Latin rhythms at all – as we're really in love with his soul tunes here! Titles include "Ordinary Guy", "Unwed Mother", "Young Gifted and Brown", "Under the Street Lamp", and "I'm No Stranger". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited, numbered pressing from 2010.)

✨✧ Donny HathawayEverything Is Everything ... LP
Atco, 1970. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Landmark stuff, and a beautiful album that mixes soulful tracks with Donny's nascent jazz sensibility! The set's a key chapter in the history of soul music – a record that has Donny emerging from shadows of the Chicago studio scene to become one of the most promising soul artists of the 70s. The album was recorded in Chicago, with a host of great players that had been gigging for years in the Chess studios – and the record is the rich culmination of talents that had been brewing in the Windy City for years. Includes the monster hit "The Ghetto" – one of Donny's best-known tracks and a rollicking funky number – in a full extended version with a good instrumental breakdown. Also features a remake of "Voices Inside (Everything Is Everything)", which shows Donny's strong ties to the Earth, Wind, & Fire organization – plus moody spiritual numbers like "I Believe To My Soul", "Thank You Master", and "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow Broadway label stereo pressing with PR suffix. Cover has some wear and aging, and a small peeled portion at the bottom left corner in back.)
Also available Everything Is Everything (with bonus track) ... CD 11.99

Nina pays tribute to an assortment of modern poets – Bob Dylan and George Harrison, as well as herself! The album collects tunes from some of Nina's other RCA albums – and features arrangements by Nina, Harold Wheeler, and Weldon Irvine – of tracks that include "I Shall Be Released", "Just Like A Woman", "To Be Young Gifted and Black", "Here Comes the Sun", and "I Want a Little Sugar in my Bowl". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has splitting on all sides, surface & edge wear.)

✨✧ Nina SimoneBlack Gold ... LP
RCA, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Black Gold indeed – as the album's a real classic from Nina, one of the excellent sets she cut with the Stroud Productions imprint during the early 70s! The style here is even hipper than her late 60s work on Philips – with a mixture of open-ended jazz and soul that's best summed up in the album's extended reading of "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair", and a great version of "To Be Young Gifted & Black", which was written by Weldon Irvine, who's probably playing piano here with Nina. Other titles include the funky "Ain't Got No I Got Life", plus "Westwind", "Who Knows Where The Time Goes", and "The Assignment Sequence" – all very hip numbers! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Donny HathawayDonny Hathaway In Performance ... LP
Atlantic, 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Not to be confused with Donny Hathway Live, this album was issued after Donny's untimely death, and features rare live material from his classic years – most recorded during the same concerts on Donny Hathaway Live! As the fame of his first concert album will attest, Donny's an extremely wonderful live performer, with a wealth of talents that show that his studio work is only half the picture of his soulful creativity. Includes a great version of "Sack Full Of Dreams", plus "Nu-Po", "Song For You", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", and "To Be Youg, Gifted, & Black". LP, Vinyl record album
