According to the notes EMI turned this album down when it was recorded in 1971, and we can't imagine what they were thinking – as the set features two lengthy tracks that follow in the best Africa 70s mode! The title track "Why Black Men Dey Suffer" rolls along at a nice midtempo groove – with lots of great Fender Rhodes before the horns come in and blow things over the top! A jangle-pop spectacular from The Five Man Electrical Band – an incredibly groovy outfit from late 60s Canada! Although issued at the end of the 60s, the album's got a sweetly-crafted feel that sounds a lot like some of the best mid 60s pop – particularly that coming from overseas – almost a lost Brit Invasion sort of sound, but one that's tuned with a few odder touches that show the group's ear for some of the west coast musical changes of the time. All tunes are incredibly catchy, and recorded with great focus on the jangly lead guitar – so much so that the vocals are almost buried down a bit more in the mix, which makes for a kind of cooly tripped-out sound. The Music Man, made different – thanks to very fresh arrangements from Jimmy Giuffre – heard here in one of his few large group sessions for Atlantic Records! British soundtrack great Ron Grainer makes a great American appearance here – turning in music for the early 70s film The Omega Man – the first film version of I Am Legend! The styles here are much more fitting for the time of the movie's release than the world of America in the future – as there are plenty of great blacksploitation and cop/crime elements that really fit the 70s urban setting of the story – really great elements that make the whole thing very different than the usual horror soundtrack of the period, and which also widen the palette of Grainer's style too! There's also a few familiar themes that are used almost tongue in cheek – instrumental hits that offset the darker mood of the action – and together, the blend of sounds is wonderful – presented here in an overstuffed collection that's well worth the 2.0 billing in the title. Great 60s country exotica and tales of the American West from actor Lorne Greene – with arrangements that combine stripped down, echoey guitar with the big & glossy RCA sound of the era, and even more brash bigness from Hollywood – all done with endearingly poker-faced vocals by Lorne that fall somewhere between Tennessee Ernie Ford and Lee Hazlewood! The record features folklore tales and story songs by Merle Travis, Merle Kilgore and other lesser known and less often recorded gems. All of it would be pure canned ham by an inferior breed of cat than Lorne Greene, but Lorne pulls it off masterfully – highly recommended western folklore – Hollywood style! LP, Vinyl record album

Given that Grey was one of those players who tried for more of a "gutbucket" sound on the trombone, we're not sure that we'd agree with the title's assessment of him as the "thinking man" – but we can say that the album's a pretty darn great batch of soul jazz groovers, recorded with Al's group that includes the under-rated, under-recorded Billy Mitchell on tenor. The rest of the group, like Billy and Al, are Basie regulars – cutting loose in a small group mode on fun little tunes like "Al-Amo", "Salty Papa", "Rompin", "Stranded", and "King Bee". A pivotal album for Chico – one that has him working with his hip group that included Charles Lloyd and Gabor Szabo, both of whom take Chico into a modal mode that would completely transform his sound! Lloyd's the center star on the album's version of his own "Forest Flower" – done here in "sunrise" and "sunset" passages – but it's really Chico's increasingly offbeat sense of rhythm that allows Lloyd and Szabo to develop their intense solos and searching grooves. Funky mid 70s Herbie Hancock – one his funkiest albums of the era! Herbie plays a host of cool keyboards – like Fender Rhodes, Arp, and clavinet – and he's joined by a group that includes just about all of the Headhunters – including Paul Jackson on bass and Mike Clarke on drums – plus help from a great array of other excellent guests – including Bennie Maupin and Wayne Shorter on reeds, Harvey Mason on drums, and even some guest keyboards from Stevie Wonder! Perhaps Donny Hathaway's greatest album from the 70s, and certainly the one with the most amazing arrangements! The record was Donny's last studio session, and it's got him working at a level that's far advanced from even his groundbreaking earlier work – using complicated rhythms and sophisticated string passages – but also throwing in some killer jazzy bits that make for some of his funkiest work ever! The liner notes have Donny showing off his musical training in evaluations of the song structures, but the music alone should be enough to convince you this one is great! Includes "The Slums", a funky rollicking tune that is sort of a follow-up to "The Ghetto"; "Valdez In The Country", a totally catchy instrumental with loads of electric piano, and a very Bob James-esque sound; the jaunty "Flying Easy"; and the spiritual soul cuts "Someday We'll All be Free" and "I Love The Lord, He Heard My Cry (parts 1 & 2)". One of the most obscure albums ever recorded by Screamin Jay Hawkins – and one of the best, as well – a rare session done down in Nashville, and with a rootsy vibe that works perfect for Jay's amazing voice! There's a bit less hoke here than Hawkins can sometimes have – and although the songs still resonate with that striking approach that got Hawkins rediscovered by a whole generation at the end of the 60s, there's also less gimmick, too – and a mode that goes for some deeper southern soul elements at all the best moments. A killer set from jazz drummer Xaver Hellmeier – recorded in New York and produced by drummer Joe Farnsworth – a mentor of the younger player, and maybe the force for bringing together the top-shelf group on the date – a wonderful lineup that features Eric Alexander on tenor, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Peter Washington on bass, and David Hazeltine on piano! The album's got all the snap, crackle, and pop that you'd expect from such a group – sharp, and very much on the money – the sort of record you'd expect from any of the other artists, or Farnsworth too, which is high praise for Hellmeier's work here as a leader! The tracks include some well-chosen numbers – including a great remake of "Book's Bossa", plus "Midnight Waltz", "Tune Up", and "Advance Notice" – plus Hellmeier's originals "Blues For JF" and "Night In Verona".
