Helena De LimaO Ceu Quem Vem De Voce ... LP
RGE (Brazil), Mid 60s. Very Good ... $9.99 11.99
A Brazilian singer with a hell of a voice – the lovely Helena De Lima, whose vocal range really fits the lush moods of the tunes on the set! Things are in a more melancholy look than you'd guess from Helena's look on the cover – a nice sort of blueness that's never too overdone, and which has a good balance between the lead vocals and the woodwinds and strings used in the backings. Arrangements are by Ruben Pocho Peren – an overlooked sophisticated talent – and titles include "So So So", "Fio De Cancao", "Flor Da Noite", "Cravo Vermelho", "Balada De Saudade", "Vai", "Pierrot", "Por Onde Eu Vou", and "Boa Noite Rio". LP, Vinyl record album

Helena De LimaUma Noite No Cangaceiro ... LP
RGE (Brazil), 1965. Very Good ... $6.99 9.99
A live and lively little bossa vocal set – recorded at the Cangaceiro nightclub, with backing by a really great small combo! The style here is similar to other live bossa jazz sets from the time – such as Elis Regina's classic with the Zimbo Trio – and although Helena's vocal style is a bit full and sometimes emotive, the spontaneous nature of the performance really helps keep things lean and clean! The combo here is named after the club – and features Raul Mascarenhas on piano and supposedly Rildo Hora on a bit of harmonica – although he doesn't seem to appear on the record as much as the cover might indicate. Titles include "Oitavo Botequim", "Penumbra", "Ponto E Chuva", "Aconteceu", "Desilusao", "Verdade Da Vida", and 2 longer "Pot-Pourri" tracks. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jackson Do PandeiroForro Do Jackson ... LP
Copacabana (Brazil), 1958. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A great little set from Brazilian percussionist Jackson Do Pandeiro – an album that grooves along on a strong wave of forro – that rootsy genre that burst big on the Brazilian scene of the 50s – tying together folksy roots and modern samba nicely, with lots of heavy percussion and basslines at the bottom of the music, and some great accordion work as well! The vocals have a raspy, soulful charm – a precursor to more soulful samba modes to come – and titles include "Falso Toureiro", "Ele Disse", "Cajueira", "Eta Baiao", "Moxoto", and "Meu Enxoval". Joao DonatoLugar Comum (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $39.99 44.99
A sweet electric 70s session from the mighty Joao Donato – very different than his earlier bossa work of the 60s – and with the same funky appeal as the best work on his classic Quem E Quem album! This set's got a tighter feel overall – very much in a samba soul style, with lots of great Brazilian bits mixed up with funk and jazz touches – including a range of great keyboards handled by Donato himself! Drums are by the mighty Wilson Das Neves – who brings in some breaks at a few points – and the whole thing's supremely soulful too – with titles that include the funky classic "Bananeira", plus "Patumbalacunde", "Lugar Comum", "Tudo Tem", and "Naturalmente". ✨✧ Joao DonatoQuem e Quem (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Odeon/Polysom (Brazil), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A gem of a record – one we wouldn't part with for anything! Joao Donato's best known as one of the founding fathers of bossa nova – better known for his 60s work over the years, than he was for 70s electric work like this. Fortunately, international groove hounds picked up on the record years back, and it's been firmly brought back into the limelight as the classic it truly is! The set's an incredible reworking of Donato's sound – the gentle jazzy phrasing of the bossa years turned towards mellow groovers that feature a heck of a lot of electric piano. The album's got a few classic funky tracks, and some even more wonderful tracks that feature Joao working sparely on Fender Rhodes – accompanying himself on raspy vocals on most of the cuts! The whole thing's great – and titles include "Nana Das Aquas", "A Ra", "Amazonas", "Mentiras", "Cala Boca Menino", "Cade Jodel", "Me Deixa", and "Ate Quem Sabe". LP, Vinyl record album

Dick FarneyPenumbra Romance ... LP
London (Brazil), 1972. Near Mint- ... $8.99
A wonderful album from this legendary Brazilian singer – and probably one of his best-ever! Farney began his career as a warm romantic vocalist in earlier pop years, but on this great set, he's emerging as a talented jazz singer, on a level with Leny Andrade or Elis Regina. The instrumentation's only a piano trio, and Farney's work on the keys fits perfectly with his moody vocals on tracks like "Este Seu Olhar", "Marina", "Ponto Final", "Uma Loira", and "Perdido De Amor". ✨✧ Gilberto GilRefavela (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1977. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest albums ever from Gilberto Gil – a set that beautifully mixes rootsy elements with tighter funk arrangements – in a style that's not unlike some of the 70s samba soul experiments from Jorge Ben! The record borrows heavily from American funk and soul of the time, and takes Gil's tight songwriting and infuses it with an even catchier edge than ever before – really creating a fantastic groove that seems to illuminate Gilberto's lyrics even more than before – with a sense of personality and joy that really comes through, even beyond the barriers of language! The whole thing's wonderful – tight, but never overproduced – and very individual, despite an influence from American soul music. Titles include "Rafavela", "Aqui E Agora", "Ile Aye", "Baba Alapala", "Era Nova", "Samba Do Aviao", and "Balafon". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joao GilbertoAmoroso (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Warner/Polysom (Brazil), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A warmly intimate album from Joao Gilberto – one that has the singer and guitarist in the same special space as his wonderful albums from the early 70s - a bit more sophisticated than the bossa years, but equally personal throughout! The set was co-produced by Helen Keane – who was bringing real magic to the records of pianist Bill Evans at the time – and music is by a core combo that includes American jazz musicians Ralph Grierson on keyboards and Grady Tate on drums – with some additional larger arrangements from Claus Ogerman, but used in a way that never clutters up the sound at all. Instead, Joao sounds beautiful right up front in the mix – with those sublime raspy vocals, and perfectly-placed lines on acoustic guitar – on titles that include a fabulous reading of "Estate", plus Jobim's "Wave" and "Zingaro", and the tracks "Caminha Cruzados", "Tin Tin Por Tin Tin", and "Besame Mucho". ✨✧ Egberto GismontiCarmo ... LP
EMI (Brazil), 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Stunning early work from Egberto Gismonti – a really complex little record, and quite different than some of his better-known work as a spare acoustic soloist! Gismonti here is at the helm of a rich array of sounds – at one level, a soulful approach to MPB that rivals the best of Milton Nascimento in the 70s – but at another, filled with sharp changes and complicated arrangements that really move past any easy labels! There's a sense of surprise that really keeps things striking throughout – an avant piano line here, full soaring vocal there, funky electro riff the next moment, and a sensitive jazz solo at another point – always interwoven in ways that make complete sense – even amidst the rich array of sounds and colors. Titles include "Raga", "Baiao Malandro", "Cafe", "Educao Sentimental", "Bodas De Prata", "Critiana", and "As Primaveras". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Egberto GismontiCoracoes Futuristas ... LP
EMI (Brazil), 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An amazing tribute not just to the rich imagination of the young Egberto Gismonti – but also to the vivid sound of Brazilian music in the 70s! The album leaps past any easy definitions – as bits of jazz, MPB, serious scoring, folkloric styles, and other elements come into play – often in the space of a single song – and Gismonti's own keyboards and guitar are mixed with really collaborative efforts from Joyce, Danilo Caymmi, Marcio Montarroyos, and other leading lights of the Brazilian underground at the time! The tunes are quite visionary – in a way that's as sublime as Gismonti's legendary 1973 album – and production is other-worldly, at a level that few Anglo albums could hope to match at the time. Titles include the classic "Cafe" – plus Baiao Do Acordar", "Danca Das Cabecas", "Carmo", "Polichinelo", "Trem Noturno", and "Ano Zero". LP, Vinyl record album

Incredible stuff – the kind of obscure Brazilian 70s album that first got us into the music in the first place, and which keeps us digging through the racks for more and more over the years! The set is the first album ever recorded by the team of Jaime Alem and Nair De Candia – both of whom sing on the record, either separately, or as a duet. The tracks have a cool jazzy feel, with grooves that might fall somewhere in between Edu Lobo and Egberto Gismonti's music, but which also have a sound all their own. Aw shucks, we'll never describe this accurately, but it's a good one, and if you don't know it, it's a treasure! Great 80s grooves from this cool Brazilian duo – the guitar and vocals of Robson Jorge and a sweet range of keyboards from Lincoln Olivetti – tied together in a style that's got plenty of great electro soul touches! At some level, the album recalls some of the 80s grooves coming from the US soul scene at the time – but the music also has elements that reflect some of the Brazilian funk of groups like Unaio Black or Banda Black Rio, and maybe even some of the styles of Marcos Valle in the early 80s too! There's a depth to the instrumentation that reflects a stronger understanding of jazz than most groups of this nature – and the vocals often take more of a place on the sidelines in favor of the instrumentation. The jazz sound is underscored by work from Marcio Montarroyos on trumpet and Leo Gandelman on baritone sax – and titles include "Eva", "Jorgea Corisco", "No Bom Sentido", "Raton", "Squash", "Ginga", and "Alegrias". One of the loveliest of all the bossa singers is caught here in some superb arrangements by Oscar Castro-Neves! The set's got a wonderful feel – with moments that are rootsier than your average bossa diva record, and others that are baroque enough to hint at the direction Nara would take a year later with Rogerio Duprat. Incredible early work by Nara Leao – some of the most groundbreaking vocals of the bossa era! The arrangements are by Luiz Eca, pianist of the Tamba Trio – and backing is by a small group that includes Eca, Dori Caymmi, and other jazz-tinged players. The overall quality of the backings sounds a lot more like an album recorded five years after the mid 60s – and Nara's mix of bohemian hip and honest bossa sincerity really makes the tracks sparkle wonderfully. Forbidden Fruit from the great Rita Lee – a record that has her working with the Tutti Frutti combo, a line that's decidedly more mainstream than her more famous group, Os Mutantes – but one who also really let Rita focus on her newly-developed title for putting over a very catchy tune! The group bring more of a rock-heavy finish to the record than some of Rita's later work – and the guitars and vocals are nicely compressed down in the production – maybe a bit like some of the best Brit mainstream work of the mid 70s – an approach that works well for Lee, and maybe even makes some of the music feel as much like a commentary on mainstream rock as much as catchy tuneful work headed for the charts. Ivan LinsMaos ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1987. Near Mint- ... $4.99 14.99
A beautiful later album from Ivan Lins – recorded in that wonderfully mature style he developed in the 80s, a mixture of his earlier vocal work, with touches of jazz, and some of the Brazilian soulfulness of the Milton Nascimento generation. The backings on the tracks is relatively electric – produced with a lot of "space", in a style that helps the instruments drift around Lins' always-captivating vocals. The album's got a soaring righteousness that prevails despite a few tinnier touches here and there – and it's filled with strong tracks that include "Vieste", "Maos", "Illuminados", "Paixo Secreta", and "O Ceu Mudou". An ambitious larger production from the team of Edu Lobo and Chico Buarque – the famous stage musical O Grande Circo Mistico, based on the poem by Jorge De Lima, and featuring a range of top-shelf performers that includes Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Milton Nascimento, Jane Duboc, Zizi Possi, Simone, and Tim Maia! The work has a serious style that's in keeping with some of Lobo's more contemplative work of the 70s – but also has some of the more dynamic horn arrangements that were also showing up in his work. And as you'd guess from the title, there's a bit of a "circus" feel in the air – but one that's musically playful, and never too kitschy. Polydor (Brazil), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $39.99
The incredible first album by Tim Maia – Brazil's greatest soul star in the 70s, and for good reason too – given that Tim was one of the few who could match the depth of American soul and funk at the time! Yet the music here is way more than just a Brazilian version of American soul – as Tim brings in some rootsier elements from local musical styles, and even some of the trippier elements that were running through Brazilian music in the wake of Tropicalia – all to make for this heady brew of sounds that's completely unique, and completely wonderful all the way through! There's plenty of tracks here that would fit well alongside both familiar soul, and the modes of funky artists like Marcos Valle at the time – and the set also features work on guitar and backup vocals by Cassiano, who'd soon go onto become a Brazilian soul star on his own. Titles include the break-heavy "Padre Cicero" and "Voce Fingiu" – plus "Tributo A Booker Pittman", "Cristina No 2", "Jurema", "Flamengo", "Corone Antonio Bento", and "Primavera". One of the funkiest records ever from Brazilian soul legend Tim Maia – and a set that also has him singing a bit of English language lyrics too! The groove here is that classic Maia blend of Brazilian roots with American funk and soul – echoes of forro or samba in some of the rhythms, mixed with psychedelic touches, and some harder-hitting funky lines too – all in a mindblowing blend that's perfectly topped with Maia's vocals – which are every bit as large and powerful as the man on the cover himself! Tim shifts effortlessly between Portuguese lyrics and American English – the latter of which really showcases his love of American soul on the titles"I Don't Know What To Do With Myself", "Broken Heart", and "I Don't Care". The album also features a version of Marcos Valle's "Preciso Aprender A Ser So", plus the cuts "Meu Pais", "A Festa Do Santo Reis", "Nao Vou Ficar", and "Salve Nossa Senhora" – all wonderful, all the way through! A great step forward for the legendary Tim Maia – working here in a style that's even tighter and more sophisticated than before – yet still equally filled with funk and soul! The arrangements are a bit bigger than before, and the production a bit more professional – but that change only brings Tim into even more heavenly soul territory – with a mix of grooves and strings that lays somewhere between the best early 70s work on labels like Curtom or Motown! Tim's got a new sense of majesty on the album – and also sings in English in a few spots – at a level that makes us wonder why he was never able to crack the American soul market at the time. An essential record from the man who brought American soul music to Brazil – with tracks that include "Over Again", "New Love", "O Balanco", "Reu Confesso", "Preciso Ser Amado", "Amores", and "Do Your Thing Behave Yourself". Sweet 70s pop from Martinha – a Brazilian singer with a wonderfully breathy voice! The album's a bit like some lost French session from the time – string-laden, but never in a cloying way – and often put together with a sliding sort of feel in the background, so that Martinha's vocals glide nicely across the tunes. The style's a bit different than other Brazilian female pop of the time – not really MPB, nor post-bossa either – and really with more of a European influence overall. A pretty darn sweet vocal session from the duo of Miucha and Antonio Carlos Jobim – recorded with lots of bossa overtones, very much the same spirit as the legendary Elis & Tom album of the mid 70s! Chico Buarque participates in the session, and Jobim even lends his vocal talents to a track or two – but his real talent, though, is his work on the arrangements – as he gives the whole thing a beautifully dreamy quality, in the manner of his best 70s work, with lots of strange off-kilter melodies floating around the mix of strings, piano, and flute! Warmly mellow work from Marisa Monte – a record that's issued in conjunction with her samba-styled Universo Ao Meu Redor album, but which has a sound that's much more in keeping with her Memorias Cronicas E Declaracoes set from a few years back! The backings here are often mellow and laidback – bits of keyboards and guitar that snake lazily alongside Monte's beautiful vocals – which themselves sparkle and glow with qualities that are far better than we remember from before. Production here is nicely subdued and almost invisible at times – but there's clearly enough magic going on in the studio to make Marisa sound this great, especially in comparison to most of her earlier work. Luiz Arruda PaesBrasil Dia E Noite Vol 2 ... LP
Odeon (Brazil), Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Fantastic big band work from Luiz Arruda Paes – one of Brazil's most captivating orchestra leaders in the 60s, and an artist who really kept pace with some of the changes going on in his country's music. This record is most famous for Paes' incredible reading of Edu Lobo's "Upa Neguinho", done in a rolling rumbling style that's been made famous as a jazz dance classic over the years. Lots of other stuff on the LP is every bit as great – and tunes include "Ole Ola", "Sonho De Um Carnaval", "A Banda", and "No Rancho Fundo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eliana PittmanPra Sempre ... LP
RCA (Brazil), 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Funky samba with a jazzy touch – sung by the lovely Eliana Pittman, with a sweet 70s style that's a lot more mature than her 70s work. Many of the tracks mix together samba percussion with a sweeter electric style of instrumentation – in a mode that reminds us of the 70s work of Antonio Carlos e Jocafi, who contributed the title track "Pra Sempre". Other tracks include "Silencio", "Eu Sei De Tudo", "Vou-Me Embora", "No Meio Do Povo", and "Manto Azul". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Baden Powell27 Horas De Estudio ... LP
Elenco (Brazil), 1969. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderfully spare work from the great Baden Powell – recorded in a warm intimate setting, with just guitar and voice carrying the entire record! The tracks are more sophisticated than his earlier bossa work – and the guitar playing is extremely emotional and a testament to Powell's virtuosity. Tracks include "Um Abraco No Codo", "Imanja", "Lotus", "Violao", "Viagem", and "Double". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has surface wear, light edge wear.)

A wonderful tribute to Baden Powell – not only musically, but visually as well! The set contains a 12 page booklet that's filled with writings on Powell's work & other Brazilian musicians in the series, plus some excellent color photos from the 1960s. The record contains some of Baden's greatest tracks, played by him and other Brazilian greats. Titles include "Consolacao" by Tamba Trio, "Lapinha" & "Canto De Ossanha" by Elis Regina, "Samba Triste" by Lucio Alves, "Tem Do" by Os Cariocas, "Samba Em Preludio" by Geraldo Vandre E Ana Lucia, and "Astronauta" and "Berimbau" by Baden Powell. ✨✧ Primo 7Pinta O Sete ... LP
Musidisc (Brazil), Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Jazzy organ grooves from Brazil – a sweet 60s swinger that packs a heck of a punch! The album's one of the few by Primo Jr, and features a great blend of organ, percussion, vibes, vocals, and guitar – all dancing around with a groove that's similar to the best mid 60s work by Ed Lincoln, who was clearly an inspiration for this session. Grooves are in a fast bossa and samba mode, played with a nice touch of jazz – and very lively and swinging throughout! Titles include "Leila", "E Com Pimenta", "Romantic Partners", "Joao Quatrocentao", "Gira Mundo", "Balanco Do Rio", "E De Manha", and "Macas E Bananas". LP, Vinyl record album
(Whatmusic reissue pressing – still in shrink with hype sticker!)

Quarteto Em CyCaminhos Cruzados – Caymmis, Lobos, & Jobims ... LP
RGE (Brazil), 1981. Very Good+ ... $9.99 24.99
The lovely Quarteto Em Cy sing the work of Dorival Caymmi, Edu Lobo, and Antonio Carlos Jobim – plus additional contributions from junior members of their families! The style is that warm four-part harmony that the group first forged back in the bossa years – updated here a bit with some slightly modern production and instrumentation, but kept relatively spare and simple throughout – never too overdone, and always with a strong focus on the vocals. Paulo Jobim and his father help a bit on the arrangements here – and titles include "Maria E Dia", "Milagre", "Desenredo", "Caminhos Cruzados", "Tataravo", "Borzeguim", "Preconceito", and "Vento Bravo" – always a great track, but especially great in this version! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has aging, some light wear.)

Quarteto Em CyQuarteto Em Cy Interpreta – Gonzaguinha, Caetano, Ivan, Milton ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1980. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A really wonderful album from Quarteto Em Cy – the Brazilian vocal quartet who first rose to prominence during the bossa nova years, but soon moved into even more sophisticated material during the 70s! The approach of this set is telegraphed in the title – as the group take on songs penned by Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, Ivan Lins, and Gonzaguinha – the new MPB generation of the 70s, whose music turns out to be perfect for the growing talents of the girls – topped off with some beautiful arrangements from Octavio Burnier, whose work really rises to the level of the vocals! The whole thing's great – a magnificent journey in sound – and titles include "Idolatrada", "Barco Fantasma", "Antes De Seja Tarde", "O Ultimo Trem", "Um Dia", "Ponta De Areia", "Gira Girou", "Ciranda Menina", and "Abandonado". Quinteto VioladoBerra-Boi ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1973. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A great early album by this instrumental combo from the 70s – and one that's a perfect realization of their mix of rootsy instrumentation with more jazzy conceptions. The arrangements on the record are by Toninho Alves, and tracks include "Tres Tres", "Cavalo Marinho", "De Uma Noite De Festa", "Beira De Estrada", and "Pipoquinha". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and a trace of a price sticker.)
