Long John Baldry is best remembered for one massive hit in the early 70s – but at the start of his career, he was one of the key artists on the UK scene mixing together blues, soul, R&B, and even a touch of jazz – as you'll hear here in a series of rare BBC material that captures Baldry with two very hip groups! The first half of the record features John on vocals as part of Steampacket – a group that also features a very young Rod Stewart, plus the great Julie Driscoll on vocals too – backed by the Trinity combo of organist Brian Auger – who would soon go on to make some great records with Julie. The second half features Baldry's Hoochie Coochie Men – a group with John as the sole singer, plus Al Gay and Stan Robinson on saxes, and Geoff Bradford on guitar. Rudy Ray Moore cut some mighty raunchy records in his time – but this one may well the be the raunchiest, and maybe the funkiest too! The album's an instruction of "the proper way to make love to a lady" – but done in true Rudy Ray style, with very down-to-earth language that really takes off from the first few sentences – serving up an array of explicit descriptions and references to body parts that make the most hardcore hip hoppers seem like they're singing nursery rhymes! The music is wonderful, too – very funky congas and drums, pounding away behind the vocals, with some funky guitar touches too – all at a level that really makes the raw lyrics move. Osunlade's always had a sound that's deep, but this time around his entire approach seems even deeper than ever – maybe because this lavish package is as much a visual treat as it is an audio one! The only studio album ever recorded by this important acoustic group – a west coast bluegrass combo whose contributions to the scene were a key influence on the birth of country rock in Los Angeles! The group here are definitely hardcore – a lineup that features work from Clarence White on guitar, Roland White on mandolin, and Erick White on bass – and vocals from all three – served up at a level that's even leaner and grittier than 60s recordings by bigger names in the field, like Jimmy Martin or Bill Monroe – yet also maybe free of any "too folk" approaches as well, given that these guys really dive into the music without any sort of pose or artifice at all.
