✨✧ Walter Bishop JrValley Land ... LP
Muse, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A really great trio set from the mighty Walter Bishop – one of those hip 70s records that really has him opening up his sound, a bit like his material for the Black Jazz label! This set is more acoustic and a trio date – with Sam Jones on bass and Billy Hart on drums – but there's still a creative imagination here that's wonderful! The title cut "Valley Land" is great – and there's other great titles too – like "Sam's Blues", and good versions of "Killer Joe" and "Invitation". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original white label promo! Cover has a cutout mark and a small bit of splitting on the top seam. Back cover has some light aging in one spot, but front is great.)

✨✧ Walter Bishop, Jr.Keeper Of My Soul (orange & black vinyl pressing) ... LP
Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of Walter Bishop's greatest records – an amazing session that's as funky as it is spiritual – and quite different than most of Bishop's other work! The vibe here is wonderful – as Bish plays a host of keyboards, not just piano – and works in the company of other players who include Ronnie Laws on reeds, Gerald Brown on bass, Woody Murray on vibes, and Shakur M Abdulla on percussion – a beautiful mix of cats who help Walter carry off some of his hippest recordings of the time! The use of vibes is especially nice alongside the electric piano – and titles include a great take on Bishop's classic "Soul Village", done here in a nice funky version – plus a version of "Summertime" with Bishop on organ, and the titles "Sweet Rosa", "Those Who Chant", and "N'Dugu's Prayer". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kenny Dorham & Jackie McLeanInta Somethin (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1961. New Copy ... $36.99 38.99 On June 7, 2024
A fantastic lost set – some of the most interesting early 60s work by both of the players! The group's co-led by Kenny Dorham and Jackie McLean – with rhythm backing by Walter Bishop Jr on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – a trans-continental trio of players who really make for a lot of fire in the date! The quintet play a fiercely modernist approach to hardbop – somewhat like McLean's studio albums from the time, but even a bit more unbridled, thanks to the live setting of the album – which was recorded at the Jazz Workshop in San Francisco. Titles include "Us", "San Francisco Beat", "Lover Man", and "No Two People". LP, Vinyl record album
(Part of the Blue Note Tone Poet series – heavy cover and vinyl!) This item will not be delivered to you before Friday, June 7.

✨✧ John HandyJazz – John Handy III ... LP
Roulette, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $11.99
One of the few beautiful early albums cut by John Handy for Roulette – and an obscure session that has him playing alto with a quartet that includes a young Walter Bishop Jr. on piano. Handy here is fresh from his work with Mingus – and his alto is filled with fire and emotion, yet also touched by a great deal of warm soufulness. His work with Bishop on the album hearkens towards later directions in 70s soul jazz – but it's also firmly rooted in a modernist hardbop vein. Titles include "Strugglin", "No Smiles Please", "Blues For MF", and "Afternoon Outing". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has minor seam splits and light surface wear.)

Charlie ParkerSwedish Schnapps – Genius Of Charlie Parker #8 ... LP
Verve, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A late 50s album that issues some killer combo material by Bird! One half of the album features work by a group that includes Red Rodney, John Lewis, Ray Brown, and Kenny Clarke – and the other features Parker with Miles Davis, Walter Bishop Jr, Max Roach, and Teddy Kotick. Tracks are short, and include some classics – and the album includes alternate takes of 4 numbers. Titles include "Si Si", "Swedish Schnapps", "Back Home Blues", "Lover Man", "Au Privave", "She Rote", and "Star Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s mono Japanese Polygram pressing – UMV 2030. Cover has a cutout notch, light aging, and is bumped with a tiny split at the bottom right corner.)

Dizzy ReeceSoundin' Off ... LP
Blue Note, 1960. Near Mint- ... $69.99
A killer quartet session by Brit trumpeter Dizzy Reece, recorded as one of his three American albums for Blue Note during the late 50s! Unlike the other records, which featured larger groups, this album's done with a quartet – which gives Reece a chance to really take over on his solos – blowing with a sense of warm and lyricism that's not heard as strongly on the other records – really getting some great support from a rhythm trio that includes Walter Bishop Jr on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Quite different from some of Dizzy's London work of the time – and with tracks that include "A Ghost Of A Chance", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "Blue Streak", "Eb Pob", and a nice version of "Yesterdays". LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese EMI pressing, with obi – BNJ 71032 – a great copy!)

✨✧ Curtis FullerFire & Filigree ... LP
Beehive, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Nice session – one with a date that might make you a bit skeptical, but with a sound that's still very much in the pocket, thanks to good handling of the effort by the Bee Hive records team! Curtis blows here with a quintet that includes Sal Nistico, Walter Bishop Jr, Sam Jones, and Freddie Waits – all very hip players, and well chosen for the spirit of the session. Titles include "The Egyptian Two", "Ballade For Gabe Wells", "Minor's Holiday", and "Yesterdays". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light ringwear, worn corners, and is lightly bent at the sides and corners.)

✨✧ Blue MitchellVital Blue ... LP
Mainstream, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the more obscure Blue Mitchell albums of the 70s – and one of the most far-reaching too! The set's still got an electric current, like his other work on the Mainstream label at the time – but there's also less funk at the core, and more of a spiritual jazz vibe – a quality that definitely burns with the "vital" of the title, and which draws strongly from the album's great use of Joe Henderson on tenor and flute – whose presence here really helps underscore the righteousness of the sound! Ernie Watts also blows a bit on the record – and the rest of the group includes Walter Bishop Jr on acoustic and electric piano, Stan Gilbert on bass, and Doug Sides on drums. Susaye Greene adds in some totally amazing vocal effects at a few points – which really furthers the unique quality of the record – and titles include the great "Unseen Sounds", which has some amazingly unusual flute work from Henderson, plus "Booty Shakin", "Vital Blue", "I Love You", and "Herman's Helmet". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light ringwear and some edge wear.)

✨✧ SupersaxSalt Peanuts – Supersax Plays Bird Vol 2 ... LP
Capitol, 1974. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A stone classic from Supersax – a record with plenty of classic bop elements, despite a very 70s-styled group name and cover! The combo's a large one, and features tight horn formation deftly cutting through a host of bop classics – lots of ensemble passages at the start, then breakout solos that really get things going! Horn players include Conte Candoli on trumpet, Carl Fontana on trombone, and supersax players Med Flory and Joe Lopes on alto, Warne Marsh and Jay Migliori on tenor, and Jack Nimitz on baritone. Ronnell Bright, Lou Levy, and Walter Bishop Jr handle the piano – and titles include "Confirmation", "Lover Man", "Salt Peanuts", "The Bird", "Groovin High", and "Yardbird Suite". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has 2 corner bends, light ring wear, faint staining along the opening.)

✨✧ Max RoachChattahoochee Red ... LP
Columbia, 1981. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A major label effort from Max, but a record that's as hip as any he was recording at the time! The set feautres Max's quartet with Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, Odeon Pope on saxes, and Calvin Hill on bass – plus a very small bit of additional piano by Walter Bishop Jr – and it's got an approach that mixes soul jazz with some experimental touches, and the occasional freewheeling percussion part by Max. Pope's work on tenor sax is especially nice, an edgey sound that recalls some of Billy Harper's work with Roach in earlier years. Titles include "Red River Road", "Lonesome Lover", "Wefe", "Reach For It", "The Dream/It's Time", and "Giant Steps". LP, Vinyl record album

A nice later date as a leader from the great trumpeter Bill Hardman – better-known for his earlier work with Art Blakey! The set features Junior Cook on tenor, Slide Hampton on trombone, and Walter Bishop Jr on piano – and titles include "Avila & Tequila", "Cubicle", "Too Little Too Late", and "Minority".
