✨✧ Richard BarbarySoul Machine ... LP
CTI/A&M, 1968. Very Good- Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A great soul album from the CTI years on A&M, and one of the few soul records ever on CTI! Barbary's got this spacey vocal style that's really great – not really falsetto soul, but kind of a tenor with a soft emotive quality. Arrangements by Artie Butler and Horace Ott give his voice a great pop/soul sort of Jerry Butler sound – and the grooviness of the instrumentation keeps things at a strong level that mixes jazz, soul, and pop up into a unique groove that's pretty darn refreshing! Features a totally great version of "Nature Boy", plus "What's Your Name?", "Call On Me", "Please Stay", "Nothin In This World", and "Like You, Babe". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label mono promo.)

Vee Jay, Mid 60s. Sealed ... $11.99
An unusual album issued by Vee Jay Records – the original home of The Beatles in the US! This one doesn't have music, but interview passages from their 1964 tour – plus some scoring from Lou Adler, and percussion from Hal Blaine! LP, Vinyl record album
(Sealed – seems to be a 70s pressing. The lower corner of the cover has waviness and faint staining, with an open spot on the shrink.)

George BensonGeorge Benson Cookbook ... LP
Columbia, 1967. Very Good ... $6.99
A great little record from the days before George Benson had totally hit his smooth jazz sound of the 70s, and was being pushed by Columbia as a hard wailing soul jazz leader! The record features his classic quartet with Lonnie Smith on organ – grooving away hard hard hard, sometimes even harder than George! Benson's fresh off his work with the Jack McDuff quartet, and his style's nice and lean, with some good riffs, and a very tight approach to the strings. Titles include "The Cooker", "Benny's Back", "Bossa Rocka", and "Benson's Rider". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono 360 Sound pressing. NOTE – The back cover is half peeled, with waviness & wear on the front and some staining – due to moisture.)

✨✧ Paul BleyCopenhagen & Haarlem ... LP
Arista Freedom, 1965/1966. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
A late 70s issue of two mid 60s live recordings of Bley's trio recorded in concert in Europe, with either Kent Carter or Mark Levenson on bass, and Barry Altschul on drums. Bley's playing in a mode that reflects ther influence of a number of the more progressive players of the same era, with a free flowing multi-linear improvisational approach, that still maintains a strong emphasis on melody and never gets too frenetic. Witha number of great Annette Peacock compositions, including "Cartoon", "Touching", "Start", "Closer", "Pablo" and lengthy takes on "Blood" and "Mister Joy". Features a rare photo of Bley without a pipe in his mouth inside the gatefold too! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some waviness inside the gatefold and light wear.)

Blue CheerBlue Cheer ... LP
Philips, 1969. Near Mint- ... $43.99 49.99
Another dose of ridiculous bluesy heaviness from Blue Cheer, without as much bluster as their first couple of albums, but the same bloated appeal. 10 numbers in all, including "Fool", "You're Gonna Need Someone", 'Hello LA, Bye Bye Birmingham", "Saturday Freedom", "Ain't That The Way Love's Supposed To Be", "Rock & Roll Queens", "Better When We Try", "Natural Man", "Lovin' You's Easy" and "The Same Old Story". Harvest (Holland), 1972. Very Good+ ... $29.99
Great work from this cool Dutch group – a quratet with lots of piano and organ from bassist Robert Verwey, lead guitar and "mouthorgan" from Ron Meyjes, percussion from Frans Smit, and vocals and flute from Michel Van Dijk! The set's after Jan Akkerman left the group, but they still have a pretty striking progressive sound. LP, Vinyl record album

A stunning live prison performance from the Man In Black, recorded in conjunction with a television special. Titles include "Starkville County Jail", "I Walk The Line", "Folsom Prison Blues", an incredible version of "Wanted Man", and what became the single off the LP, "A Boy Named Sue". LP, Vinyl record album

Ray CharlesYes Indeed! (original cover) ... LP
Atlantic, 1958. Very Good ... $14.99
Yes indeed – a mighty early classic from the great Ray Charles – one of his first full length albums, and a set that brings together the searing sort of work he was doing for Atlantic Records in the 50s! Ray's completely confident and at the top of his game here – and a lot more raw than if you only know him from his later country-tinged material. Tracks include "What Would I Do Without You", "It's All Right", "Get On The Right Track", "Blackjack", "I Want A Little Girl", and "Heartbreaker". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono red & purple label pressing. Cover has some waviness, wear, & light staining along the opening- but mostly on the back. Light wear & aging overall.)

✨✧ Joao DonatoNew Sound of Brazil – The Piano Of Joao Donato ... LP
RCA, 1965. Very Good+ ... $24.99
Darkly brilliant – and one of Joao Donato's most fantastic records! The set was recorded during Joao's time in America in the mid 60s – cut in New York with lofty backings by Claus Ogerman, in a pillowy soft mode that fits perfectly with Joao's light bossa piano lines, and which has all the hints of sadness and moodiness that often creep into his playing. The complicated approach of the album far surpasses some of Joao's work from Brazil at the same time – and the album's one of the best of its generation, a sublime mix of all elements that still sounds as fresh today as it did in 1965! Titles include "Amazonas", "Glass Beads", "Sugarcane Breeze", "Vento Do Canavail", "It Didn't End", and "O Barquinho". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing with deep groove. NOTE – Vinyl is nice and clean, but the cover has heavy wear & staining on the bottom 3 inches or so with peeling, clear tape, and waviness.)

Bobbi HumphreySatin Doll ... LP
Blue Note, 1974. Very Good+ ... $18.99
Fabulous stuff – one of the legendary albums that funky flute player Bobbi Humphrey cut with producer Larry Mizell! The record's a prime example of the Mizell genius at work – as Larry's arranged these fantastic backdrops for Bobbi's flute – soaring keyboard lines, layers and layers of rhythm, and just enough space for Bobbi to come in and send the record to the heavens with her spiritually grooving sound. Harvey Mason plays drums, Jerry Peters is on keyboards, and the rest of the group's an all-star LA studio jazz assemblage – perfectly fit together by Larry's arrangements and production in that classic cosmic mid 70s Mizell wall of sound! Tracks include "Fun House", "Satin Doll", "San Francisco Lights", and "New York Times". LP, Vinyl record album
(In the textured cover, with faint stained edges, waviness, cut corner, small name in pen, aging.)

Tommy James & The ShondellsHanky Panky ... LP
Roulette, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
We're sure you know the group from their mega-hit oldie title cut – a garagey tune with a very catchy hook – but you might also appreciate them for the soulful finish they put on other tracks on this set, clearly inspired by groups on Atlantic, and going for a blue-eyed soul approach that they're not always known for. Titles include "Soul Searchin Baby", "Lots Of Pretty Girls", "Shake A Tail Feather", "Good Lovin", "The Lover", and "Love Makes The World Go Round". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing. Cover has light wear, a cutout hole, a bit of waviness on the spine, and a hype sticker.)

✨✧ Rahsaan Roland KirkReturn Of The 5000 Lb Man ... LP
Warner, 1975. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A beautiful late chapter in the jazz journey of Rahsaan Roland Kirk – and an album of subtle genius that's really opened up to us over the years! The setting here isn't as "hit you over the head" as on some of Kirk's Atlantic Records – because at one level, the tunes are mostly straight, and free of gimmicks – yet also still manage to conjure up the warmth, spirit, and soul that Roland brought to his best work. There's a slightly electric vibe running through some of the tunes, thanks to keyboards from Hilton Ruiz – and the album also benefits from organ work by Trudy Pitts and guitar from Billy Butler – both of whom are wonderfully restrained, in a way that matches the subtlety of the entire conception of the set. Titles include "Theme For The Eulipions", which features a great recitation from Betty Neals, plus cool chorus vocals – and other titles include "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "Giant Steps", "Loving You", and "I'll Be Seeing You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original Burbank label pressing. NOTE – the bottom 3 inches of the cover has staining, waviness, and peeling – worse on the back.)

Lafayette Leake & E Rodney JonesMight Is Right!/Soul Wrinkles ... LP
Yambo/Weis, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A very strange record from Chicago! The album features one side of soul jazz piano work by the Lafayette Leake trio – a bluesy group from Chicago that feature Leake on piano, Clifton James on drums, and Willie Dixon on bass. They play one very long track called "Soul Wrinkles", with lots of nice changes, and a good live feel. The flipside of the record features radio DJ E. Rodney Jones reciting an extended work called "Might Is Right", with backing "courtesy of Chess Records". The work is vaguely political, and has a similar sound to records by Gary Byrd and Jim Ingram – although less funky. A strange one, but a great relic of the kind of indie record scene that once helped spread knowledge and wisdom through the African American community. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has staining and waviness on the top right corner and some light surface wear.)

✨✧ Led ZeppelinLed Zeppelin ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good ... $19.99
One of the most monumental debuts in rock history – a record that hit the world like a led zeppelin, and left an impression for years to come! Led Zeppelin pretty much took over rock right from the beginning – which isn't too surprising, given that Jimmy Page had an in-demand guitar heavy for years already – but the power of this debut is still astonishing after all these years – a blistering blend of bluesy roots, psych fuzz, and razor-sharp instrumental dexterity! The whole thing's a gem – and titles include "Good Times Bad Times", "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" "You Shook Me", "Dazed And Confused", "Your Time Is Gonna Come", "Black Mountain Side", and "I Can't Quit You Baby". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Curtis MayfieldGot To Find A Way ... LP
Curtom, 1974. Very Good+ ... $23.99
A great album that's often overlooked amidst the flurry of early 70's releases on Curtom, but which stands as one of Mayfield's greatest from the 70s! In fact, we'd say that the album's one that we enjoy putting on more than most – because the songs are less familiar, and not nearly as played-out as some of Curtis' bigger hits. The production style's still the same – with plenty of rumbling funky soul, arranged by Rich Tufo in that classic Curtom mode – and you can't beat Curtis' vocals on songs like "Mother's Son", "Love Me (Right In The Pocket)", "A Prayer", and "Ain't No Love Lost". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing with Bell Sound stamp. Includes insert! Cover has a cutout notch and light waviness from moisture on the bottom corners.)

Lotus (Italy), 1969. Very Good+ ... $11.99 14.99
A nice little live date from Mingus – a bit looser, and almost a bit rougher than some of his other work from this vintage – but in a way that makes for a continually appealing set! The group here is a sextet – with Eddie Preston on trumpet, Charles McPherson on alto, Bobby Jones on tenor, and Jaki Byard on piano – and tracks are long and lively, taken at a pretty good clip with plenty of space for the soloists to do their own thing. Titles include "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress", "The Man Who Never Sleeps", and "OP". LP, Vinyl record album

Hard hitting, groove oriented psychedelia from Moby Grape – still making a wonderful racket, with a farther reaching overall sound than their previous work! Wow takes loads of interesting twists and turns thanks to the varied tastes of the band members – from mellow Cali sunshine, to walloping heaviness, to some baroque and lightly orchestral touches! Titles include "The Place And The Time", "Murder In My Heart For The Judge", "Bitter Wind", "Can't Be So Bad", "Just Like Gene Autry – A Foxtrot", "He", "Motorcycle Irene", "Three-Hour", "Funky-Tunk", "Miller's Blues" and more. World Pacific, Late 60s. Sealed ... $6.99 8.99
A groovy little soundtrack – played by The Sandals, the same group who worked on the film The Endless Summer – director Bruce Brown's strange documentary about surfers around the world. This time around, the theme is skiers – and The Sandals more than rise to meet the challenge – crafting some tight and groovy 60s instrumentals, with lots of guitar riffing over crackling bass and drum parts. Check out the tracks "Soul Something" and "Porsche" for some real grooviness – and keep on grooving through "Ski Bum", "Yellow Dove", "Return From The Casino", and "Water & Stone". Arista, 1973/1977. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A beautiful solo piano set by Cecil Taylor – recorded live in Ohio in 1973, and originally released on his own small Unit Core label. The work is a perfect example of how Cecil was stretching himself at the time – working in a mode that was part free jazz, part 70s spiritualism, opening up far more than even in his classic group recordings of the late 60s. The album features one long work – "Indent" – separated into 3 "layers". LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent Artista/Freedom reissue that brings together the full set from Cecil's 1962 performance at Cafe Monmartre. He's playing here in a trio that has Jimmy Lyons on alto and Sonny Murray on drums, and the music's a key link between his later seventies stuff, and his earlier work that you can find on OJC reissues. The set has 2 takes of "Lena", plus "Trance", "What's New?", "Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come", and "D Trad, That's What". With great liner notres, too! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Anita BakerRapture ... LP
Elektra, 1986. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic album of classy vocals – one that helped set a whole new tone in 80s soul music! Anita had already gained a bit of experience on the soul scene before this set, but with this record she emerged as a full-formed diva who could effortlessly blend jazz and soul into a magnificent new sound. The production has a few touches that date the record a bit, but there's a timelessness to the set that was apparent to listeners the moment it was released. Titles include "Mystery", "No One In The World", "Sweet Love", "You Bring Me Joy", and "Caught Up In The Rapture". LP, Vinyl record album

Philips (Brazil), 1979. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Light and lively work from the great Gal Costa – a set that's light years away from her Tropicalia experiments of a decade before, but which is equally beautiful in its own sort of way! First off, Gal's vocals are amazing – more expressive and dynamic than in the early days – with a range of different emotions that comes off wonderfully, and without some of the heaviness of some of her contemporaries – such as Maria Bethania. The arrangements, while not entirely tropical, mix together jazz choro modes with more contemporary touches – providing a surprisingly strong, sparkling backdrop for the lyrics! The album features a nice remake of "India", plus the tracks "Forca Estranha", "Olha", "Meu Nome E Gal", "Balance", and "Samba Rasgado". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla Fitzgerald Sings The Songs From The Film – Let No Man Write My Epitaph ... LP
Verve, 1960. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An album that's often overlooked amidst some of the bigger "songbook" Verve sessions by Ella Fitzgerald – yet a really special record that shows off a side of Ella that's not ever captured this well on other records! The record was also initially billed as tied into the book and film Let No Man Write My Epitaph – but there's nothing soundtrack-like at all about the performance, as Fitzgerald works with only backing from pianist Paul Smith – a player who sounds wonderful next to the singer, and brings just the right sort of inflections to open up Ella's vocals for the date! There's a spare quality that's completely captivating – proof that Fitzgerald was a hell of a jazz singer at the core, even when her star was rising on the international scene – maybe even more compelling without any large arrangements at all, as she takes on superb material that includes versions of "Misty", "Black Coffee", "Angel Eyes", "I Cried For You", "Who's Sorry Now", "September Song", "Then You've Never Been Blue", and "Reach For Tomorrow". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eddie HazelGame, Dames, & Guitar Thangs ... LP
Warner, 1977. Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massively tripped-out set of guitar-based funk – played to perfection by the legendary Eddie Hazel, best known for his work in the George Clinton P-Funk empire! The album offers a different side of Eddie's talents – one that's produced with a smoothly compressed California groove, in a mode that's almost an extension of some of the themes explored by Shuggie Otis on his own 70s albums – taken with a bit more of a P-Funk style. George Clinton produced the set with Eddie – and the tunes have a nice slow-stepping groove that really opens up the guitar solos wonderfully. The record kicks off with a massive cover of "California Dreamin" – but the whole thing's great, with a wonderfully unified feel throughout! Other titles include "Frantic Moment", "What About It?", "So Goes The Story", "Physical Love", and a great cover of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. NOTE: Vinyl has a heated edge that causes a skip at the beginning of each side on most turntables – plays and looks great otherwise! Cover looks great, with just a small cutout notch and a bit of light waviness from moisture.)

Dunwich, 1966. Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fuzzy, freaked-out classic from one of the coolest groups to work on the Chicago scene of the 60s – the mighty Shadows Of Knight, easily one of the best garage acts of their time! The album's got a raw power that's undeniable – a gritty sound that almost beats the Boston, Texas, and Sunset Strip scenes at their own game – as sharp guitars, weird Hammond, and plenty of feedback come together to blow away the listener right from the start – all with a sound that's a lot more heady than the group's better-known "Gloria" hit, with a far-reaching vibe that makes us wish these guys had kept on recording a few more years longer – because they might have given some of the best European psych acts a real run for their money! Titles include "Bad Little Woman", "The Behemoth", "Three For Love", "Peepin & Hidin", "Gospel Zone", "High Blood Pressure", and "Tomorrow's Going To Be Another Day". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Arthur Brown & Kingdom ComeGalactic Zoo Dossier ... LP
Polydor (UK), 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The start of a fantastic chapter for the legendary Arthur Brown – the first album issued with his Kingdom Come group, a combo who were even more insane than his Crazy World project of the late 60s! Brown is the quintessential front man here – singing in this really dynamic, dramatic way that's years ahead of its time – much more upfront than so many of the singers of the psych generation, and even the new hard rock vocalists too – at a level that makes music like this a great inspiration for so man styles to come! The instrumentation is as dynamic as the vocals, too – not prog jamming, but instead this really focused, fused blend of heavy drums, searing guitar, and organ – all sending things way way over the top. Titles include "Internal Messenger", "Night Of The Pigs", "Trouble", "Sunrise", "Brains", the "Galactic Zoo/Space Plucks" medley, "Creep", and "Creation". LP, Vinyl record album

BYG/Actuel (France), 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the few rock albums on the BYG/Actuel label – and a nice one at that! The group's an early spinoff from the very first lineup of Procol Harum, but by the time this album was recorded the only thing the groups shared was drummer Bobby Harrison. The sound is stripped down blues rock with a touch of mild, poppy psychedelia – replete with plenty of guitar and organ. The sound is just raw enough to rock, but the tunes are more concise than jamming, though there's no shortage of riffery to wag your hair too, should that be your style. Includes "Time Of The Season", "Hoo Doo Man", "Enchanted Wood", "Fly", "Dusty Track", and "My Life". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Arlo GuthrieAlice's Restaurant ... LP
Reprise, 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Arlo Guthrie may not be one of the best-remembered folkies of the 60s, but he sure made waves with this classic debut and the side-long title song! Arlo is the son of Woody Guthrie, and probably owes as much to Bob Dylan as Dylan does to Woody – but he was definitely on to something when he expanded the shorter protest song into the space of the 18 minute "Alice's Restaurant Massacre", which makes surprisingly strong use of its many grooves on the record – while Arlo delivers a biting commentary on the life of a young man in the era of Vietnam and the uptight Establishment. Side two brings in shorter tracks, but with a similar energy – selections that include "Chilling Of The Evening", "The Motorcycle Song", "I'm Going Home", "Highway In The Wind", and "Now & Then". Hard to imagine Etta Jones being lonely and blue – especially when she sounds as great as this! The album's one of Jones' early classics from Prestige – a date that really has her classing things up a lot, and drawing on bits of Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington's styles, to mix in with the bluesier tones of her roots – put together with a great deal of charm, and a new sophistication that made Etta one of the hippest jazz singers of the 60s! Backing is by a cool small combo – with Patti Brown on piano, Wally Richardson on guitar, and a bit of tenor from Budd Johnson – and titles include "I'll Be There", "In the Dark", "Gentlemen Friend", "I Wonder", and "Miss You So". Although Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross started out their career singing vocalese versions of Basie tunes, they do a pretty darn great job here with Ellington – in fact, maybe even better, given the sophistication of the tracks. ✨✧ Taj MahalRecycling The Blues & Other Stuff ... LP
Columbia, 1972. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Hardly any "recycling" going on here – as Taj Mahal takes bluesy roots and turns them in a whole new direction for the 70s, evolving the music way past the level most other bluesmen were working in at the time! At some level, Mahal's style is far more rootsy than most early 70s blues artists – often more acoustic guitar and percussion than you'd expect – but there's also a looser, freer presentation of the material – opened up a lot more than any delta bluesman from many years back, and often touched with some jazzier inflections on some of the phrasing. Plus, the music here features some unusual elements from time to time – including kalimba, tuba, banjo, and even some backing vocals by The Pointer Sisters. The album was recorded live, with a nicely organic feel – and titles include "A Free Song", "Corinna", "Conch Close", "Kalimba", "Bound To Love Me Some", "Richochet", "Gitano Negro", "Cakewalk Into Town", and "Texas Woman Blues". ✨✧ Thelonious MonkMonk's Blues ... LP
Columbia, 1968. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Thelonious Monk meets the mighty Oliver Nelson – the hip bigger band arranger who was helping so many other artists find their groove back in the 60s! The result is less Nelson-led than some of Oliver's other albums of the time – and instead, the arranger is nicely respectful of Monk's core sound – and still manages to led Thelonious keep the frontline strong on piano, and work with familiar players are the core who include Charlie Rouse on tenor, Larry Gales on bass, and Ben Riley on drums. Nelson's touch seeks mostly to augment the Monkish lines with some larger horn shadings – sometimes a bit upbeat, but never more swinging than Monk might want. There's enough of a blue tone here to keep this one nicely in line with the rest of the 60s Columbia catalog for Thelonious – and titles include "Monk's Point", "Consecutive Seconds", "Let's Cool One", and "Rootie Tootie". An album with a bit of a split personality, a combination of slick modern reggae, and crisp 80s groove soul numbers. While the reggae numbers aren't much to write home about, the soul tracks are an outstanding example of the best of the 80s groove style, with horn lines punctuating Morgan's slightly rootsy vocal delivery, a fat bass pedal chugging along over chirping rhythm guitar and occasional synth flourishes. Fantasy, 1980. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A really special thing from Pleasure – a set that has the group sounding sharper and tighter than ever – with a lean funky groove that's just right for stepping into the 80s! Things are never too slick or commercial – and the core funk combo energy of Pleasure still really comes through strongly – but the guitars and keyboards get even more play than before, following strongly from the vibe of the Future Now album, and it's great mix of mellow steppers and snapping groovers! Pleasure are still very much at the top of their game – with a quality that's way higher than so many other groups who'd been copping their sound for the past few years – as you'll hear on tracks that include "Take A Chance", "Yearnin Burnin", "Law Of The Raw", "You Are My Star", "Spread That Feelin", and "Now You Choose Me". ✨✧ John ScofieldRough House ... LP
Inner City, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
John Scofield's the leader here – but at times, we almost think the record's the vision of pianist Hal Galper as much as it is the guitarist – as both their efforts leap from the grooves with a really wonderful sense of energy! Maybe part of the album's strength is the rhythm duo – as the great Stafford James is on bass, a player we always love, next to drummer Adam Nussbaum – who can also really take off, and keep things driving in ways that have Scofield moving with all these fast flourishes of sound – quickly spinning out those chromatic lines that made him such a distinct player in the 70s! Galper has a great sense of boldness – and titles include "Alter Fields", "Rough House", "Slow Elvin", "Triple Play", "Air Pakistan", and "Ailleron". LP, Vinyl record album

The only real full length document ever issued by the Sex Pistols – an album that came out almost as the group was falling apart – yet one that's still gone on to have a hell of a place in rock and roll history! There's no denying the power of these songs, even all these many years later – and together, this mix of important singles and key album cuts offers up a bleak picture of modern life that still resonates pretty darn strongly all these many years later! The whole thing's great, and as instrumentally intense as its lyrics – with classics that include "Holidays In The Sun", "Bodies", "Anarchy In The UK", "No Feelings", "Problems", "Pretty Vacant", "God Save The Queen", "New York", "EMI", "Liar", "Submission", and "Seventeen". Classic bop by Sonny Stitt – material recorded at the end of the 40s, originally issued as singles and 45s, but issued here as a full length set with a great cover image by Don Martin! Given that Chick Corea first got his start working in the New York Latin scene back in the 60s, the album's a bit of a return to his roots – even if the general theme here is Spanish, and not Afro-Cuban! The Corea Spanish Heart here is cast in some darker, more contemplative tones than more traditional Latin sides – but it borrows a wonderful array of modes from genres past – including bits of strings, percussion, and an overall more ambitious approach that sometimes shows up in Chick's piano work, or in the general construction of the tunes. The double-length set features a wide variety of Spanish-influenced numbers – played by Corea on acoustic piano and a variety of keyboards, with other players who include Don Alias, Jean Luc Ponty, Stanley Clarke, and Steve Gadd. Jubilee, 1958. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work – and one of the few albums ever cut as a leader by Ray Draper, a jazz tuba player, with an approach to the instrument that's a lot better than you might think! Draper plays the tuba like the best baritone saxophonists – using the lower registers of the instrument to groove around in tight step with the basslines, but always still managing to swing – a remarkable feat, given the heaviness of the instrument! Draper's talents were quite respected at the time – both by Jackie McLean, who used him on a record, and by John Coltrane, who makes a rare appearance here as a sideman on the set! The mixture of Coltrane's angularity and Draper's bassiness is sublime – and the album's filled with great tracks that have a fresh late 50s modernist hardbop approach. Instrumentation has plenty of jazz inflections, which really keeps things interesting – and the percussion has so many different styles going on, it's hard to keep track! The Manhattans really hit a deep new level of sound on this early 70s set – a record that takes off strongly from their early singles, and really paves the way for their more sophisticated sounds to come during the Columbia Records hit years! The quintet are completely sublime here – fused wonderfully together on the harmonies, at a level that beats most of their east coast contemporaries – yet still getting a nice sort of indie approach in the production, which means that things are never too commercial – and the group can really open up and do their thing! There's a few badass tracks that fit with the group's Superfly look on the cover – but as always, some of our favorites are the mellow cuts – which these guys can almost do better than anyone else. Titles include "I Can't Stand for You To Leave Me", "Do You Ever", "Back Up", "Million to One", and "Cry If You Wanna Cry". LP, Vinyl record album
