A real European classic from Ennio Morricone – one of his fantastic soundtracks for French director Henri Verneuil – who always seemed to manage to bring the best out in the maestro! As with some of Morricone's other music for Verneuil, there's an approach here that almost doesn't even seem to fit the images on the screen – moments of wonderful instrumental sensitivity, with those spare passages that Ennio does better than anyone else – mixed with groovier cuts that set the scene for some of the action in the story, but at a level that's almost anti-cinematic, given they way they can stand here on their own. Piano genius Ahmad Jamal is really taking off here – letting his solos stretch out and his impeccable sense of timing really move things forward from his studio sides of the time – allowed plenty of freedom in the space of the Penthouse nightclub in Seattle during the mid 60s! The package features three different performances, all of which have sublime work on bass from Jamil Nasser – easily one of Jamal's greatest accompanists, and a player whose sense of rounded energy seems tied to the keys of Ahmad's piano at every single moment. Many years back, Antti Lotjonen was a bassist with a very rhythmic vibe – a player we loved in the Five Corners Quintet, but now a jazz musician who's grown in leaps and bounds in recent years! This second album from Antti's Quintet East is a strong tribute to that growth – music that's full of all sorts of complicated changes and colors, yet which never gets too outside to swing either – maybe somewhere in territory of the best modern jazz on the Finnish scene from decades back, but given a very fresh voice in the hands of Antti – and a lineup that includes Mikko Innanen on alto and baritone, Jussin Kannaste on tenor, Verneri Pohjola on trumpet, and Joonas Riippa on drums.
