Babes In ToylandSpanking Machine ... LP
Twin Tone, 1990. Near Mint- ... $43.99 49.99
The first Babes In Toyland LP – maybe a little noisier and stranger than their major label efforts, which is a heck of a statement given how gnarly and awesome the later Fontanelle record turned out! Babes never really got the props they deserve for helping pave the way for noise rock to pummel it's way to the mainstream in the early 90s – especially for women in the scene – and Spanking Machine is the most underappreciated album in an underappreciated run all together. Includes "Swamp Pu**y", "He's My Thing", "Vomit Heart", "Dogg" "Pain In My Heart", "Lashes", "You're Right" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

ReplacementsLet It Be ... LP
Twin Tone/Rhino, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 23.99
The masterpiece by one of the greatest, most sincere rock bands of all time! Let It Be veers all over the place, or at least as much as jangly rock music can, in the best way possible. Includes the pseudo twangy opener "I Will Dare", with the distinctly midwestern hardcore of the group's earlier years showing up on "We're Coming Out" and "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out", and Westerberg's great heart-on-sleeve, ragged balladry appearing for the closers. Like the Meat Puppets and X, the 'Mats really found themselves after they shed the rigid rules of punk rock, and developed into something every bit as honest and heartfelt. They followed the rock songbook just enough to keep their work warm and familiar, but with way too huge and hard-pounding heart to ever seem even the least bit derivative. Hell, they even make Kiss's "Black Diamond" sound sincere! Other tracks include "Favorite Thing", "Androgynous", "Unsatisfied", "Seen Your Video", "Gary's Got A Boner", "Sixteen Blue" and "Answering Machine". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John GrayNew Wave ... LP
Capitol, 1962. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A really great little album – one of the few sessions recorded during Capitol's "Dimensions In Jazz" years, and one that features a twin-guitar lineup that's very cool! Guitarist John Gray's in the lead, handling all solos, and he's backed by a trio that features Herb Ellis on rhythm guitar, plus bass and drums. Gray's got a raspy, almost rock-like tone that's a strong contrast to Ellis' smoother lines – which makes for a sparkling groove that's almost a bit like what you'd hear if Santo & Johnny cut some jazz! Titles include "Caravan", "Comme Ci, Comme Ca", "One Note Samba", "Memphis In June", and "Witchcraft". LP, Vinyl record album
(Gold label Dimensions In Jazz stereo pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Sire, 1985. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A big crossover classic for the champions of the Minneapolis scene – their first for Sire and featuring some of the greatest rock songs of the 80s, be it college radio, mainstream or any thing – greatness period! The sound is a bit more polished than the Twin Tone years, but there's no scrubbing out the shambling attitude, and truth be told, the more soul-searching material here is some of the best stuff they'd ever record. Includes the all time classics "Left Of The Dial" and "Hold My Life", plus "Little Mascara, Lay It Down Clown", "I'll Buy", "Kiss Me On The Bus", "Waitress In The Sky", "Swingin Party", and "Here Comes A Regular". Miles DavisMilestones ... LP
Columbia, 1958. Very Good- ... $23.99
One of our 50s favorites by Miles Davis – and a record that offers the same twin-sax sound as his classic Kind Of Blue – with both John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley working alongside Miles in the group! Rhythm here is by the Prestige-era trio of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – but it's the two saxophonists who really help Davis shape the feel of the record, pushing things past the initial Coltrane/Davis groove with a really wonderful sense of space and sound! Titles include the classic "Milestones", plus "Two Bass Hit", "Dr Jeckyll", and "Sid's Ahead". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono 6 eye pressing with deep groove. NOTE – cover is almost completely split, with surface wear & aging, a few ink stamps, tape remnant & faint staining on the edges.)

✨✧ Earl & Carl Grubbs – The VisitorsNeptune (Cobblestone) ... LP
Cobblestone, 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful post-Coltrane playing by the two Grubbs brothers (who get top recommendations from Pharoah Sanders and Naima Coltrane on the back cover!). The album's filled with spiritual spiralling intertwining alto and soprano sax lines, underpinned by soulful backing on piano, bass, drums, and percussion. The quality of the writing on the album is excellent – and we'd easily rank this one up there with the best work on Strata East from the time, or with Gary Bartz's first two albums for Milestone. Includes the long title cut, plus "Reflections (On New York City)", "Pisces", and a beautiful cover of "Naima". Really wonderful stuff! LP, Vinyl record album
(Original Cobblestone pressing! Cover has a cutout mark and some light aging around the edges – very common for this one. Vinyl is great.)

✨✧ Nick Brignola featuring Pepper AdamsBaritone Madness ... LP
Beehive, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Baritone madness, and a lot more too – a set that's full of surprises, and which may well be one of the most striking records on the Beehive label from Chicago! The date not only features twin terrors on baritone sax – Nick Brignola and Pepper Adams, both blowing at the height of their powers – but it also includes a very unusual group of players alongside them – modern giant Ted Curson on trumpet and flugelhorn, avant bassist Dave Holland, incredible drummer Roy Haynes, and British pianist Derek Smith. The unlikely meeting of players comes off wonderfully here – and most tracks are nice and long, with lots of blowing session room for solos! Tracks include "Billie's Bounce", "Donna Lee", "Marmeduke", "Alone Together", and "Body & Soul". LP, Vinyl record album

Prince Lasha & Sonny SimmonsCry (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Contemporary/Craft, 1963. New Copy ... $26.99 28.99 On August 16, 2024
A classic of spiritual jazz! The album is one of the few rare pairings of Sonny Simmons and Prince Lasha from the 60s – and it's arguably the greatest album they ever cut! The set was recorded for the Contemporary label in LA, but it's far far different than the cool jazz that was the label's stock in trade during most of the 50s – done instead with a pulsating spiritual feel that really takes off as the album progresses! The lineup features the twin-reed frontline of Lasha on flute and Simmons on alto, plus an amazing rhythm section that includes 2 bass players (Gary Peacock and Mark Procter), who really give the tunes a pulsating feel overall – plus drums by Gene Stone. Titles include the famous groover "Congo Call", plus the tracks "AY", "Lost Generation", "Red's Mood", and "Green & Gold". LP, Vinyl record album

Slim Moore & The Mar-KaysIntroducing Slim Moore & The Mar-Kays ... LP
Marlow, 2011. New Copy ... $20.99 24.99
One of the best funk albums of the 2010s – and one that really does an amazing job of putting equal emphasis on instrumentation and deep soul vocals! Slim Moore comes across like some lost singer from the early 70s funky 45 generation – gritty and upfront, with a quality that's instantly infectious – almost like Syl Johnson during his Twinight years. Then the Mar-Kays play with this depth that's equally wonderful – mixing funky licks with more complicated soul touches – some of the vibes we've gotten from the Daptone scene – slower grooves mixed with faster ones, touches of hip instrumentation, like vibes – all wrapped up in a production style that really recalls the best days of indie soul. The whole thing's wonderful – a record we'd put right up there with Lee Fields' My World, or the Charles Bradley full-length – and a set we'll be digging for years! Titles include "How Long", "Cityscape", "Slim's Theme", "Reachin Higher", "Mar-Kays Theme", "Cool Breeze", and Help Me Now". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ JJ Johnson & Kai WindingJay & Kai (Savoy) ... LP
Savoy, 1955. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Excellent early recordings from the team of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding – the kind of sides that always remind us how great their twin trombone work could be! The album's lacking the cliches of later albums, and presents both players at their best – soulful and stripped down, grooving in a few different groups – with players who include Billy Bauer on guitar, Leo Parker on baritone, and Charles Mingus on bass. The album also features a solo track by each – and titles include "Coop", "The Major", "Lament", "Bernie's Tune", and "Blues For Trombones". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original red label pressing with a deep groove and RVG etch. Cover has a spot of gloss peel, with light aging on the back.)

✨✧ Eddie Lockjaw Davis/Johnny Griffin QuintetTough Tenors Again N Again ... LP
MPS, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A smoking twin-tenor session for MPS – one that reunites the mighty talents of Johnny Griffin and Eddie Lockjaw Davis! The album was done as an offshoot of both players' work for the Clarke Boland Big Band at the time – and the set was not only produced by CBBB impresario Gigi Campi, but also features a core rhythm trio from that ensemble – Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums! Tracks are nice and long, and have a sound that really shows the evolution of both players since their famous recordings of the early 60s – tones that are even more modern and edgey at points, served up with a fire that hasn't died at all – and set loose on rhythms that move past the usual grooves you might have expected from their American sessions together. Titles include "Tin Tin Deo", "Jim Dawg", "Gigi", "When We Were One", and "Again N Again". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Per Texas JohanssonAlla Mina Kompisar (180 gram pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Moserobie (Sweden), 1998. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Twin reed magic from this really fantastic combo – a quartet led by the great Per Texas Johansson, and one that also features plenty of saxophone work from Fredrik Ljungkivst too – all in a very open setting that has their horns moving in wonderfully unfettered territory! The set's not free jazz – as it's got rock-solid rhythms from Dan Berglund on bass and Mikel Ulfberg on drums – but with no piano or other instrumentation, the saxophonists really open up with an array of shifting sounds – Johansson on tenor, baritone, and a variety of clarinets – and Ljungkvist on soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone! The interplay is fantaswtic – and titles include "Snabbis", "Tunnelseende", "Alla Mina Kompisar", "After The Rain", "Miljarder Stjarnor", and "Livstid". 2LP version features four unreleased bonus tracks – "Tenderly", "Ros", "Gloria's Step", and "Parkforvaltningen (unedited version)". ✨✧ Aksak MaboulRedrawn Figures 1 (with download) ... LP
Crammed (Belgium), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
If the "figures" in the title here sounds a bit familiar, it's because Figures was a great return to form for the legendary Aksak Maboul – a record that showed that their unusual mix of sounds and styles was alive and well into the 21st Century – used here as a platform for new creation by a hosts of artists and producers invited to the project by the group! These tracks aren't remixes, and are definitely "redrawn" in the spirit of the title – fresh music that moves between a variety of modes, but which often still retains the leaner feel of the group in their current incarnation. Titles on this first volume include "Silhouettes (Vanishing Twin rmx)", "C'est Charles (Shungu rmx)", "Eyelids & Phosphenes (Aksak Maboul reconstruction)", "Hotel Suites (Carl Stone redesign)", "Un Caid (Spooky J rmx)", and "Retour Chez A (Kate NV rmx)". ✨✧ Cosmic Renaissance (Gianluca Petrella)Universal Language ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2022. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really wonderful project from Gianluca Petrella – one that seems to take all the deeper currents he used in his work with Nicola Conte, and push them even farther here on his own! There's a righteous depth to the record we never would have expected from Petrella a few years before – an album-length set that's full of jazz and soul, equally intertwined – with a quality that almost feels a lot more like some of the best London work in recent years than some of the more familiar modes we know from the Schema label. Petrella's at the helm of the proceedings, leading the group on trombone – and there's plenty of key guests on the record throughout – including Soweto Kinch on tenor and vocals, Beppe Scardino on baritone, Pasquale Calo on tenor, Vanja Contu on harp, and Anna Bassy on vocals. Titles include "Nomads", "Ancient Jazz", "Unknown Dimension", "Natsu", "Comes From The Ground", "Universal Language", "Wonder", and "Connection". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marker & Joe McPheeMcPhee Marker EP ... 12-inch
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two slices of vintage funk, both very different – one by DNA, one by Parliament – performed in very different versions here, by a group that features Ken Vandermark on saxes and guest work from Joe McPhee on tenor! Vandermark's Marker combo is one that's more than deft enough to swing the balance between no wave and P-Funk – with twin guitars from Andrew Clinkman and Steve Marquette – plus keyboards from Macie Stewart and drums from Phil Sudderberg – topped with work from the leader himself on tenor and baritone. The presence of McPhee – a jazzman who himself also has a bit of a history in funk – only furthers the intensity of the performance – as the group deliver these short, tight takes on the cuts "Egomaniac's Kiss" (by DNA from the No New York compilation) and the George Clinton classic "Night Of The Thumpasorus Peoples". 12-inch, Vinyl record

Frank ZappaFunky Nothingness (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Zappa, 1970. New Copy 2LP ... $36.99 39.99
A set that's not entirely funky, but maybe not that far off either – as the whole thing features unreleased material that was recorded by Zappa in the studio after Hot Rats – including some nicely jamming cuts that really have the group letting loose in maybe a more spontaneous, organic sort of way! All that Zappa sharpness is still present in the instrumentation, but things are maybe a bit more soulful – which seems a strange word to use, but definitely fits at times – as the hip group features performances from Sugarcane Harris, as well as drums from Aynsley Dunbar! Titles include "Basement Jam", "I'm A Rollin Stone", "Tommy/Vincent Duo 1", "Funky Nothingness", "Work With Me Annie/Annie Had A Baby", "Khaki Sack", "Twinkle Tits", "Chunga's Revenge (basement version)", and "Tommy/Vincent Duo 2". ✨✧ Attila Zoller & Jimmy RaneyJim & I – Improvisations On Two Guitars ... LP
L+R Records (Germany), 1979. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Jimmy Raney cut some fantastic records on the American scene during the 50s – but by the time of this set, he was working and recording a lot more overseas – often in a much more modern tone that makes him a perfect match for the guitar genius of the great Attila Zoller! Both musicians here play without any other backing at all – and the music has this lean, intertwining quality that's breathtaking – complicated lines from both players, really understanding the space and sound of the other – never getting in the way, nor dominating – yet also finding ways to be very individual and distinct! This quality comes through immediately on the album's leadoff, the surprisingly strong "Hommage A Bach" – and continues on other tunes that include "The Gallery", "Autumn", "Conjecture", "Jim & I", and "Two Beat Circa 1980". LP, Vinyl record album
