Dexter GordonDaddy Plays The Horn ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1955. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99 About May 29, 2024
One of Dexter Gordon's proudest moments of the 50s – a rock-solid session for Bethlehem – easily one of the best-remembered hardbop sides from the label's California years! The album's got a relaxed, free-blown sound that's quite nice – with Dex in the lead on tenor, supported by the trio of Kenny Drew on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Lawrence Marable on drums. Gordon's perhaps not as fully imaginative as he would become in the 60s, but his sound and control is still great throughout – and the rhythm section really helps knock this one out of the park. Titles include versions of "Darn That Dream", "Autumn In New York", "You Can Depend On Me", and "Confirmation", plus two originals "Number Four" and "Daddy Plays The Horn". CD

✨✧ Great Jazz TrioAutumn Leaves ... CD
441/Eighty Eights, 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from the Great Jazz Trio of Hank Jones, Richard Davis, and Elvin Jones – a lineup that's changed a bit from the classic 70s incarnation of the group, but which still has Hank working very much at the the height of his lyrical powers! This excellently-recorded set is a perfect example of the strength of the Japanese-based Eighty Eights label – a return to the simple elegance of some of the best Japanese-recorded sessions of the 70s, ones that take American players, and present them in uncluttered, straight ahead brilliance. Titles include "Blue Bossa", "Six & Four", "Summertime", "Yesterdays", and "Autumn Leaves". CD

Eighty Eights (Japan), 2002. Used Gatefold ... $24.99
Collaboration has always been at the heart of the work of the Great Jazz Trio – and no matter what the lineup, the group is always an equally weighted, three-pointed star – one that here hits a beautiful balance between the piano of Hank Jones, drums of Elvin Jones, and bass of Richard Davis! The album's one of a few recent efforts that show the group really returning to the form of their initial late 70s genius – simple, elegant, and never overdone – but always at a level that shows that these guys don't take the "great" in their name lightly! Titles include "Blue Bossa", "Summertime", "Long Ago & Far Away", "Autumn Leaves", "Memories Of You", and "Moose The Mooche". CD

East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99 About May 29, 2024
A bit of a change for The Great Jazz Trio, but a great one too – given that Buster Williams is on bass here, instead of the usual Ron Carter – working with drummer Tony Williams and pianist Hank Jones to really make things sparkle! Buster's bass is always a treat, and this album's no exception – a set that's filled with some surprisingly soulful moments on the bottom, which really seems to push the group nicely on the longer tracks in the set. Jones sounds a bit different here than before – in a good way – and titles include versions of "Love For Sale", "Secret Love", "Autumn Leaves", and "Someone To Watch Over Me". CD

Blue Note (Japan), 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful stripped-down session that was recorded in the mid 60s, but not issued until the end of the decade, for some strange reason! Grant Green plays guitar in a laidback quartet with Herbie Hancock on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all working wonderfully together, in long spiralling lines that are filled with soul and a gentle, easy groove. The set is an odd mix of compositions with a "western" theme – like "I Can't Stop Loving You", "Wagon Wheels", and "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" – but the players more than manage to make the session swing way past the origins of the material! Very tough to find, but an essential addition to any Grant Green collection. CD

✨✧ Steve GrossmanStandards ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1985. Used ... $16.99
Tenorist Steve Grossman's a hell of a player in so many different settings – but we're especially fond of the mid 80s stretch in which he made this record – a time when Steve had learned from all of his bolder, more dynamic moments of the 70s – and was able to fold them back into some soulful, old school tenor work that's really amazing! Case in point is this cooker – a record with the simple, subtle title of Standards – and which features Grossman making his way through a host of familiar tunes – yet at a level that's really breathtaking – a classic sense of individual phrasing and interpretation – beholden to none, and maybe all the more revolutionary in the way it's never trying to overstate its own existence. Yet that quality is also what makes it even more exciting – maybe more so than some of Steve's more experimental sessions – and Grossman holds us rapt throughout, in a quartet that also features Fred Henke on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Masahiro Yoshida on drums. Titles include "Time Was", "Just In Time", "Autumn Leaves", "Half Nelson", "Easy Living", and "When I Fall In Love". CD

There's a massive 31 tracks in the set – with previously unreleased versions of "Autumn Leaves" and "Blues For Peanuts", alongside other goodies that include "Calling Dr Funk", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise","A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", "Fenwyck's Farfel", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Ginza Samba", "Work Song", "Mr Lucky", "Corcovado", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", "Skating", "Christmas Is Coming", "Thanksgiving Theme", "Theme To Grace", "Linus & Lucy", "El Matador", "Oh Good Grief", and "Christmas Time Is Here (inst)". ✨✧ Jim Hall/Ron CarterAlone Together ... CD
Milestone/OJC, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
The title's an apt one, as the session features spare, unaccompanied duets between guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Ron Carter – done at a time when both players were stepping into some of their warmest, most sensitive years. Hall's especially great here – and even though he had already built a career out of working in lighter, less rhythm section-based settings, the early 70s saw him moving into even more unfettered territory – and opening up with incredibly personal, sensitive notes that danced equally well with the space around them. Titles include "St Thomas", "I'll Remember April", "Alone Together", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and "Autumn Leaves". CD

✨✧ Chico HamiltonChico Hamilton With Paul Horn ... CD
Crown/Boplicity (UK), 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
Unusual material from Chico Hamilton – recorded around the same time as his groundbreaking work for Pacific Jazz – but for the smaller Crown/Modern label in LA! The format's a bit unusual, and changes a bit throughout the record – showing Chico's already-strong ear for creative formats that go way beyond conventional jazz. There are 2 numbers at the end of side 2 featuring Chico in the familiar chamber jazz lineup, with Fred Katz on cello and Paul Horn on reeds – "Crazy Cats" and "Lord Randall". The rest of the tracks feature the stringed instruments handling most of the melody, in a free floating style that's got the same "modern yet swinging" approach of some of Jimmy Giuffre's best late 50s recordings, which ultimately places it in a similar context to the chamber jazz numbers. Titles include "Porch Light", "Autumn Landscape", "Uyawda", "Lolly Pop", "Pluck It", "Katz Up", "Crazy Cats", and "Lord Randall". CD

MPS (Japan), 1967. Used ... $29.99
A rare German session by Hampton Hawes – recorded in trio format with backing by two of Europe's best rhythm players, bassist Eberhard Weber and drummer Klaus Weiss – and in a groove that's really wonderful! There's a great tone to the record that's evident from the very first note – a warmth, and almost bell-like quality that we don't always remember from other Hawes albums, and which makes this one really special. Backing is by Eberhard Weber on bass and Klaus Weiss on drums – and both players are heard here in rapt reverence to Hampton's work on the keys, but still with enough of a force to color in the record with their presence, especially in the case of Weber's bass. Titles include some tasty originals – like "Hamp's Blues", "Rhythm", "Sonora", and "Black Forest Blues" – plus versions of "Autumn Leaves" and "I'm All Smiles" CD

Contemporary/Victor (Japan), 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
The darkly brooding image of Hampton Hawes on the front cover of this one is a real standout in the mostly-sweet cover lineup of the Contemporary label – but it's also a great indication of the sound of the record, which is something different than most of its contemporaries! Hawes is working here at his top-shelf early best – stepping around the keys of the piano with a sense of grace and spaciousness – but also a hard-hitting, highly rhythmic mode on the left – a bit soul jazz at times, mixing earthy elements with the sweeter, lyrical moments in his solos. Rhythm is by the team of Red Mitchell and Chuck Thompson – and titles include "Yesterdays", "Blues For Jacque", Stella By Starlight", "Steeplechase", "Round Midnight", "Autumn In New York" and "Section Blues". ✨✧ Coleman HawkinsDesafinado ... CD
Impulse, 1964. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The Hawk, in prime late form, lays down some beautiful tenor solos over gentle bossa nova accompaniment – working in a mode that's much more satisfying than just a "classic player meets bossa" session, angularly crafting the solos with that dark edge that he had in all of his later work. The groove's similar to a Stan Getz bossa outing, with light acoustic guitar backing him up, but Hawkins' playing is very deep and soulful, and the groove gets very low. With the great cuts "Samba Para Bean" and "Stumpy Bossa Nova". CD

✨✧ Jimmy HeathTime & The Place ... CD
Landmark, 1974. Used ... $19.99
A fantastic session by Jimmy Heath – cut right at the time of his best 70s soul jazz work! This obscure set was recorded in New York in 1974, but not issued in this form until the mid 90s – and it features Heath with a stellar group that includes Curtis Fuller, Stanley Cowell, Mtume, Billy Higgins, and Pat Martino. The overall sound is modal soul jazz – in the style of the best work on Strata East, with a far-reaching spiritual approach that never goes too far outside, but which is ready to explore the farther aspects of jazz-based expression. Heath is incredible – leading the group on alto and soprano, blowing post-Coltrane lines that are supported by fantastic rhythm work by Cowell, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins. Tracks include "The 13th House", "Time & The Place", "The Voice Of The Saxophone", and "No End". CD

Obe/Goodtime, 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning side project from Albert Toodie Heath of the Heath Brothers – a musician who was sometimes a bit staid in the past, but who was really feeling the vibe of the spiritual scene in the post-Coltrane years! The set resonates with a vibe that's very similar to the rare Heath Brother's album on Strata East, Marchin On – and the lineup here is incredible, with reeds from Jimmy Heath, trumpet from Don Cherry, piano from Herbie Hancock, bass from Buster Williams, percussion from Mtume, and drums from Ed Blackwell – all coming together for a session that's nearly lost to the history books, but which is one of the strongest spiritual jazz sessions of the late 60s! Herbie plays all acoustic piano throughout, and the tracks are long, leaping, and loping – with stretched-out spiritual solos from Jimmy Heath and Don Cherry – and a proud and righteous sound that's extremely free-spirited without going too far out. Titles include "Baraka", "Maulana", "Dunia", and "Kamili". CD

The first-ever CD issue of a range of material from this ultra-hip group – all tracks that originally appeared on vinyl-only releases, now making their CD debut in an overstuffed collection that features 24 tracks in all! The vibe here is great – that Karl Hector & The Malcouns mix of deep funk instrumentation and various global elements – almost an imagined version of 70s sounds from Africa and the Mid East, but served up with the sensibilities of a deep funk combo – which is what they are, given that the group is just the Whitefield Brothers and Poets Of Rhythm, working here under another one of their many names! Yet the instrumentation is quite different than those other acts, too – much more rootsy and filled with a lot of organic percussion and other global elements – as you'll hear on titles that include "Shangold", "Leealah", "Roads Of Otumpa", "Tamanrasset", "JB Rip", "Irtijal", "The Cave", "Orange", "Transition X", "Medium Rare (part 1)", "Beyond Squares", and "Coomassi". The record's definitely a nostalgia blitz, but one that has a very strong grounding in the 80s! Benjamin Herman plays saxophone throughout – but in a setting that's very new wave, post-punk, and no wave as well – lots of sharp reed lines colliding with frenetic work on bass, guitar, and keyboards – all with a vibe that makes you feel like you maybe stumbled onto some hip performance spot on the New York downtown scene in 1982! Yet despite the bombast and other instrumentation, Herman is actually pretty amazing on his solos – coming up with all these great sounds that really push the boundaries of the instrument – on titles that include "Chancelot", "One For Deelder", "Captain Zorg", "Zaat", "Hornin Out", and "Asman Graves". A sweet set from the early years of the UK funk scene – the smoking debut from Hi Tension, and a set that's filled with sharp numbers throughout! There's a strong jazzy undercurrent to the music – a bit like some of the sounds you might hear from the Fantasy Records scene – no surprise, since those records were always huge on the British scene – and quite possibly had an influence on the direction of Hi Tension here – with tight rhythms on the bottom, complicated jazzy changes on the instrumentation, and some tight horn parts that really soar along strongly with the vocals! Lyrics are mostly presented in an ensemble mode – produced warmly, with almost an Earth Wind & Fire mode – and the album was put together by Kofi Ayivor of Osibisa, with a slight touch of Afro funk in the mix. Tracks include the classics "Hi Tension" and "British Hustle" – plus "Autumn Love", "You're My Girl", "Power & Lightning", "Peace On Earth", and "Unspoken". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most striking mid 70s sessions from Japanese trumpeter Terumasa Hino – an extended suite of tracks performed by a very hip group that includes Mtume on congas and percussion, Cecil McBee on bass, and Motohiko Hino on drums! The approach here is almost in a mid 70s spiritual soul jazz mode – with lots of spare percussion and bass work at the beginning, building in mood and meaning as the set goes on and things heat up. Hino plays trumpet and percussion, and all players vocalize at parts of the performance – chanting along with the tunes in a way that really adds a soulful undercurrent to the record. Think (Japan), 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
A sublime set from late 60s Japan – featuring piano and vibes at the lead, plus bits of flute and some nicely snapping percussion! The feel here is flowing, graceful, and creative – definitely modern in its orientation, but never too far outside – and always concerned with the overall shape, tone, and color of the record. Finding a link for the style is a bit difficult – because at some points, the record has the soul of a Bobby Hutcherson 60s release, but at others it's got the airier, more spacious sound of the MJQ – although we'd definitely say that the Hutcherson influence dominates, and many of the best numbers here have a sound that's not unlike some of Bobby's best Blue Notes. Titles are all in Japanese, as are the players listed – but the set's one heck of a great little record, especially if you dig soulful vibes from the 60s! CD

Rare small group work from the great Johnny Hodges – an unissued live set from the start of the 60s, and one that has Johnny working with key Ellington sidemen in a very Ellington-like setting! Solo Hodges could usually take one of two forms – more soulful small group material that has less of the arrangements of his longtime leader, the Duke – and more Ellington-based performances, of which this set is definitely one – as Hodges leads a hip combo with Ray Nance on trumpet, Lawrence Brown on trombone, Harry Carney on baritone, Al Williams on piano, Aaron Bell on bass, and Sam Woodyard on drums. Tunes are almost all numbers by Ellington or Billy Strayhorn, but done in a nice lean style, with key solo performances throughout – and titles include "Rocking In Rhythm", "Jeep Is Jumpin", "Things Ain't What They Used To Be", "Sophisticated Lady", "Mood Indigo", and "Solitude" – plus "Good Queen Bess", "Perdido", and "Autumn Leaves". The sound quality is great – very clear, with a nicely crisp tone on the horn parts, especially Hodges and Carney! CD

CD

Trio (Japan), 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Straight trio grooving from Takehiro Honda – but pretty darn great work nonetheless! The album's a nice bridge between the harder, more rhythmic pulse of his early soul jazz sessions, and the later, freer sound of his more lyrical trio sides – and the whole album shows Honda opening up with a new sense of freedom, really taking off on the keys of the piano, while still keeping a nicely understated groove going at the bottom. The rest of the trio includes Yoshio Suzuki on bass and Kan Murakami on drums – and titles include "Sunny", "I Love You", "Autumn Leaves", "Willow Weep For Me", and "Here's That Rainy Day". Label M, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
Very hip work from the two players – and never released before! The set was recorded as part of a series produced by Baltimore's hip Left Bank Jazz Society, and it features Heath and Hubbard leading a quintet that also include Gus Simms on piano, Wilbur Little on bass, and Bertell Knox on drums. The tracks are a lot longer than any of the players' studio sides from the time, and the live setting has them blowing some harder, slightly more cutting solos than usual. Titles include "All Members", "Bluesville", "What Is This Thing Called Love?", and "Autumn Leaves". CD

✨✧ Al Hudson & the Soul PartnersEspecially For You/Cherish (with bonus tracks) ... CD
ABC/Expansion (UK), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two fantastic early albums by Al Hudson – working here with his initial group, The Soul Partners! First up is Especially For You – a record that's kind of a first chapter to all the excellent work by One Way to come – even though Al's not using that group name at this time! The record's got this cool, classy vibe – an update of an earlier Detroit soul mode, and one that maybe followed that city's shift a few years later than 70s soul changes in Philly during the decade – and handled with a similar blend of groovers and mellow cuts! The vibe is similar to the great shift The Dramatics were making on ABC Records at the time – and Al and the group work here with production by Al Perkins and arrangements by Jimmy Roach. Titles include "Baby Let Me Love You", "I Got A Notion You Got The Motion", "Real Love", "You're So Wonderful", and "Trying To Prove My Love". Cherish is a funky soul classic from Al Hudson and the Soul Partners – a second full length set, and one that really has Hudson finding his groove! The rhythms are funkier than before – thanks to strong work on bass from Kevin McCord, who also joins Al a bit on vocals – in a mode that still continues the group's strong work on midtempo numbers, but also maybe answers a 70s disco wave with more of a Detroit funk overall! Great work from the group that would later turn into One Way – with titles that include "Tripped, Slipped, Stumbled, & Fell", "If You Get Caught", "If You Feel Like Dancing", and "I Like Everything About You". CD also features bonus tracks – "Feelings (7" version)" and "If You Feel Like Dancin (12" version)". CD

One of the most sophisticated albums that Bobby Hutcherson recorded with reedman Harold Land – a very hip session that features the arrangements of piano player Todd Cochran – also known as Bayete for a pair of early 70s albums on Prestige! The sound here is more farther-reaching than before for the team of Hutcherson and Land – a deepening of the soulful spirits first cooked up on their earlier collaborations, stretched out to farther-reaching territory in the hands of Cochran's arrangements and compositions. The group's got a full sound too – with trumpet and flugelhorn from Oscar Brashear, trombone from George Bohannon, and added reeds from players who include Ernie Watts, Fred Jackson, and Charles Owens. Harold Land plays tenor and flute, Hutcherson vibes and marimba, and Cochran is on acoustic piano throughout – but the record also features some electric keys from William Henderson. ✨✧ Kara JacksonWhy Does The Earth Give Us People To Love ... CD
September, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Kara Jackson has a really amazing voice – a range that goes nicely deep at all the right times, and which sounds especially strong here amidst the often lean but really effective instrumentation on the record – put together at a level that's very fresh and unexpected, especially in the way that acoustic guitar might be used upfront next to some more processed elements! That guitar seems to emphasize the honest quality in the very personal tunes put together by Jackson – a hell of a songwriter who almost makes you feel as if you've stumbled upon her working her craft on her own, overhearing things she might not be ready to share with the world. Yet by that, we don't mean that the album's unpolished – it's really well put-together, thanks to production help from Sen Morimoto, Nnamdi, and Kaina – on titles that include "Free", "Rat", "Therapy", "Dickhead Blues", "No Fun/Party", "Brain", "Pawnshop", "Liquor", and "Recognized". Argo/Universal (Japan), 1961. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Not just a wonderful record for the music, but also for the classic cover image too – a photo of Ahmad Jamal's righteous night club The Alhambra – an Eastern-themed spot on Chicago's Michigan Ave, where Jamal made some incredible music for a few short years! Jamal was one of the few jazz musicians to control his means of production this strongly – and, according to legend, the club actually closed down because he wouldn't allow alcohol to be served – a key support of his spiritual beliefs, but not the greatest choice when running a nightclub. Regardless of that history, though, the music continues to be as proud and powerful as ever – a key modern moment in jazz piano, handled by a trio that also features the legendary Israel Crosby on bass, as well as Vernell Fournier on drums. The set was recorded inside the Alhambra – and tracks include the lovely "Snow Fall", plus hip Jamal takes on "The Breeze & I", "Sweet & Lovely", "The Party's Over", and "Autumn Leaves". CD

Epic/Legacy, Early/Mid 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The long-overdue reissue of some of Ahmad Jamal's first recordings – early sides for the Okeh and Columbia labels, all tunes that would go on to have a huge influence on the use of the piano in jazz! All tracks on the set were recorded in the early 50s with Jamal's great drumless trio that featured Ray Crawford on guitar and either Eddie Calhoun or Israel Crosby on bass – the latter of whom is tremendous here, working as a player who really helped set his instrument free from its traditional role in jazz. The trio's blend of guitar, bass, and piano is completely unique – extremely inventive at both a rhythmic and melodic level, as each instrument often fills both roles equally well – dancing around with an internal groove that emerges outwardly as an especially fluid approach to the tune. If you've never heard Jamal at his early best like this, the CD's gotta be one of the best places we can think of to start – as it features 21 titles in all, all beautifully remastered with impeccable sound that goes far beyond even our original albums! Titles include "Poinciana", "Black Beauty", "Something To Remember You By", "Pavanne", "Perfida", "Rica Pulpa", "Old Devil Moon", "Autumn Leaves", "Ahmad's Blues", and "Aki & Ukthay". CD

Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1955. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little album from this overlooked singer – an east coast vocalist from the 50s, working here on one of the few sessions she ever recorded! Teal's got an exotic look on the cover, but the presentation of the music is right up there in the best mainstream jazz modes of the time – and unlike some of the other small combo vocal work on Bethlehem in the 50s, this album has the fuller feel of the sorts of records you might hear on a label like Capitol or Verve at the time. Ted Steele handles the arrangements – and is also credited with discovering Teal in Atlantic City – and the backings are a mix of jazzy flourishes and larger strings – never poppy or overdone. The record may be one of the strongest demonstrations of Karashima's sometimes-overlooked genius – very different than his classic albums, and really showing a lot of growth and maturity since those years – with a vibe that almost makes you feel like the piano is an extension of his soul. One of our favorite Japanese pianists of the 70s, working here with two younger players who really help preserve the mix of lyricism and groove that made his earlier records so great! Fumio Karashima plays both acoustic piano and keyboards here – the latter in the range of a Fender Rhodes, if not exactly that instrument – alongside the snapping drums of Nobuyuki Komatsu, and quick-stepping bass of Satuski Kusui, both of whom come into especially strong focus on the more upbeat numbers. One of the best-remembered jazz albums from singer Bev Kelly – partly for the record's great use of guitar by Johnny Smith, but also for the great vocals from Bev herself! The album's one of a few that really set a new standard for small combo jazz in the 50s – different than the bigger band records with singers, but also not nearly as cabaret-styled as some of the other records with a small group behind the vocalist. Smith's tone is wonderful – that moody, mellow magic he did so well – and his pairing here is not unlike that of Barney Kessel with Julie London, but with much more of a New York vibe overall. An excellent mid 70s Japanese fusion set, led by the Gil Evans protege Masabumi Kikuchi – with a very similar group to the one on his awesome Susto LP! The vibe isn't quite as funky on this outing – in fact it's a bit more reminiscent of Miles' spacey electric explorations – though there are some pretty hard groovin' moments should definitely appeal to fans of funky fusion. Steve Grossman and Dave Liebman play some nice coloristic lines on reeds, and Terumasa Hino is in fine form on trumpet. The rest of the group is rounded out by Reggie Lucas on guitar playing some hard choppy accompaniment to Kikuchi's synths and electric piano, Mtume on percussion, Al Foster on drums and Anthony Jackson on bass. We're especially keen on the dark and heavy "Auroral Flare", the spacious "Pacific Hushes" which opens with a beautiful line played by Hino and the set's closer "Alone". CD

✨✧ Charles LloydDream Weaver ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A classic set from reedman Charles Lloyd – a set that really pushes forward all the experiments he'd begun in the Chico Hamilton group – and shows a bold move forward for rhythms in 60s jazz! The tracks are long, and spiral out wonderfully – but in ways that are different than those used by other creators of the time – like Eric Dolphy or John Coltrane. Even though leading the group on tenor and flute, Lloyd's got a real sense of rhythm to his playing – echoes of the Hamilton group – but set loose with a stellar quartet of younger players – including Keith Jarrett on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all perfect choices for inventive music like this! The standout cut is the amazing "Sombrero Sam", a tight little groover that we never tire of – and one that has Jarrett sounding much more in the pocket than you'd ever imagine – and other tracks include "Dream Weaver", "Autumn Sequence", and "Bird Flight". LP, Vinyl record album
(Green & blue label stereo pressing. Cover has light wear and spotty aging, mostly in back.)

Two great sets from reedman Charles Lloyd! Dream Weaver really pushes forward all the experiments he'd begun in the Chico Hamilton group – and shows a bold move forward for rhythms in 60s jazz! The tracks are long, and spiral out wonderfully – but in ways that are different than those used by other creators of the time – like Eric Dolphy or John Coltrane. The standout cut is the amazing "Sombrero Sam", a tight little groover that we never tire of – and one that has Jarrett sounding much more in the pocket than you'd ever imagine – and other tracks include "Dream Weaver", "Autumn Sequence", and "Bird Flight". Love-In features a classic batch of modal grooves from Charles Lloyd – recorded during the height of his mind-expanding years, with his famous quartet that included Keith Jarrett on piano and Jack DeJohnette on drums! The tracks are long and magical, done with that spiritual spiraling sound that Lloyd was wowing the hippies with at the time – and considering that this set was recorded live at the Fillmore, there were an awful lot of hippies present to be wowed! But the set's also got a charm that lives long past its time – thanks to an expansive vision from Lloyd on flute and tenor, and from Jarrett on piano too. Titles include "Sunday Morning", "Love-in", "Tribal Dance", and "Temple Bells". CD

Joe LovanoI'm All For You – Ballad Songbook ... CD
Blue Note/EMI, 2004. Used ... $0.99
The album gives away its premise with the "ballad" in the title – but that's only part of the picture here, as the tenor of Joe Lovano is so wonderfully distinct, the album's got a richness that goes way beyond its cover! As with Coltrane's famous Ballads album of the early 60s, Joe here proves that at the core, past his other settings and experiments, he can still be a hell of a traditionalist on his horn – yet work with a sense of individuality that comes through right from the very first note! His partners in crime here are Hank Jones on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Paul Motian on drums – and titles include "Early Autumn", "Monk's Mood", "Like Someone In Love", "I'm All For You", "Don't Blame Me", "I Waited For You", and "Countdown". Reggie LucasSurvival Themes ... CD
East Wind (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99 About May 29, 2024
A very nice set of Japanese fusion tracks cut by guitarist Reggie Lucas, with nice electric backing by Hubert Eaves on keyboard, Michael Henderson on bass, and other acoustic players like Mtume, John Stubblefield, and Clifford Adams. The set was recorded by East Wind in Japan, and the best cuts on here have that nice smooth fusion sound that graced their releases in this vein from the 70's. Lucas hits some excellent grooves with a warm sweeping feel, punctuated by tight solos with lots of blue notes, and these cuts include "Tender Years", "The Barefoot Song", and "Slewfoot". The "Survival Themes" suite is a bit more "out", and less to our liking, but there's more than enough good moments on the other cuts! CD

A classic set from singer Gloria Lynne – mature vocals that bridge the worlds of soul and jazz – all set to some beautiful modern arrangements by Melba Liston! The set's got a depth that goes a bit past some of Gloria's other records from the time – less of the pop-styled approach, and more of a sound that presents the album as a really cohesive, unified set. Sackville (Canada), 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful late work from Junior Mance – a solo piano session, and one that really shows the great range of growth he'd experienced over the decades! Mance was always great, no matter what the setting – from lyrical trio dates of the early years, to soul-drenched sides of the 60s – but this album has him moving with a wonderfully sensitive vibe, as well – amazing right hand touches that flow with boundless energy over the keys of the piano, as Junior paints these sublime pictures in sound, while still keeping an overall sense of soul as well. A really revelatory album, especially if you only know Junior from the 60s and 70s – and titles include "All The Things You Are", "The Single Petal Of A Rose", "Autumn Leaves", "Atlanta Blues", and "Old Folks". Excellent Verve work from Herbie – a sweet little set with a nice Latin undercurrent! The style here is similar to that of Herbie's Flautista album – and has some larger arrangements from a nonet set the backdrop for some evocative flute solos from Mann. The instrumentation is very much in the spirit of the title – with some strong use of vibes by Johny Rae, plus conga from Ray Mantilla, bongos from Ray Barretto, and snakey bass work from Nabil Totah! Includes the great track "Ritual", arranged by AK Salim – plus "Dearly Beloved", "I'll Remember April", "Autumn Leaves", and "Fife N Tambourine Corps". LP, Vinyl record album

An open-ended live set from Wynton Marsalis' 80s run for Columbia Records – and a set that's sometimes a bit more unbridled than his studio work at the time! There's still plenty of the Marsalis manner in place here – that great talent for subtle shadings, and quiet exploration of sound – but the longer tracks also have Wynton blowing his top a bit more, and really running along with his horn. The group's a quartet – with Marcus Roberts on piano, Robert Hurst on bass, and Jeff Watts on drums – and titles include "Juan", "Autumn Leaves", "Much Later", "Au Privave", "Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans", "Just Friends", and "Chambers Of Tain" – plus a few interludes of "Knozz Moe King". One of the greatest 50s showcases for the tenor talents of Warne Marsh – a deceptively understated album that captures Warne at his most fluid and creative point! The setting is a quartet – with Ronnie Ball on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Stan Levey on drums – and Marsh is magnificent throughout, really blowing with a tone that is fresh and filled with modern ideas – yet never overdone, nor too willfully complex to lose the train of the tunes. The approach is almost Konitz-soulful – a wonderful distillation of ideas in the hands of one magical talent – and titles include "Ad Libido", "It's All Right With Me", "Playa Del Ray", "Autumn In New York", and "You Are Too Beautiful". International Anthem/Nonesuch, 2020. Used ... $9.99
One of the most ambitious albums ever from Rob Mazurek – and a set that really continues the legacy of community building and world healing that's become such an important part of his music! Rob's a player who was great at the start – a hell of a trumpeter, and a great experimentalist with electronics – but in recent years, he's matured to become a real messenger for the farther, future reaches of jazz – with an energy that makes a collaborative project like this come off in a way that might never have occurred in the hands of any other musician! Mazurek is at the head – director, composer, arranger, and instrumentalist too – and the large lineup is filled with heavyweights from the Chicago scene that Rob helped shape over the past few decades – plus others as well – players who include Damon Locks on voice and electronics, Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Tomeka Reid on cello, Joel Ross on vibes, Jaimi Branch on trumpet, Jeff Parker on guitar, Ingebrigit Haker Flate on bass, and Chad Taylor, John Herndon, and Mikel Patrick Avery on a variety of drums and percussion. There's a richness here that tops other Exploding Star Orchestra performances – and more of a focus, too – so that the whole thing comes together as even more than the sum of its mighty parts, as one of the best International Anthem releases to date. Titles include "Galaxy 1000", "Parable Of Inclusion", "Autumn Pleiades", "Minerals Bionic Stereo", "Dimensional Stardust", "Abstract Dark Energy", and "The Careening Prism Within". CD

A stunning set of punk jazz, and one that maybe hearkens back to key experiments of this nature from the 80s scene – particularly some of the more groundbreaking work on the New York downtown scene! Ava Mendoza plays electric guitar and Devi Hoff play electric bass – but the pair also work here with excellent tenor from James Brandon Lewis, whose presence really balances out the fuzzier electric energy in a great way – different lines, different sounds, and a balance that never has Lewis trying to match the guitars for ferocity, which is a real plus. The quartet also features great drums from Ches Smith – and titles include "The Stumble", "Interwhining", "Dyscalculia", "Babel 17", "New Ghosts", and "Ten Forward". LP, Vinyl record album

Another winner from Stephanie Mills and the hitmaking team of Reggie Lucas and Mtume – two musical partners who really helped Mills find her groove! The sound here is classic mainstream soul from the start of the 80s – upbeat and catchy, but without any of the too-clunky commercial modes that would bog things down a few years later – still very much in the warmer, jazz-inspired sound you'd guess from the roots of Mtume and Lucas! The best numbers are the mid to up tempo grooves, all with a nice polish and sophisticated songwriting – and titles include "Winner", "Two Hearts", "Don't Stop Doin What Cha Do", "Top Of My List", "I Believe In Love Songs", "Night Games", "My Love's Been Good To You", and "Magic". 20th Century, 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Stephanie Mills in fine formation here – working with the team of James Mtume and Reggie Lucas, who helped the lady reach the heights of her career in the early 80s! The sound here is catchy and contemporary, but hardly ever too commercial – just relaxed and grooving, in a mode that lets Stephanie's vocals flow nicely over the top, but with a bit more of an easygoing feel than in her records of previous years. As usual, Lucas and Mtume bring a nice touch of jazz into the album – a subtle warmth that makes the best moments sparkle, really resonating nicely with Mills' vocals. Titles include the massive hit "Never Knew Love Like This Before" – plus "Sweet Sensation", "Try My Love", "I Just Wanna Say", 'Wish That You Were Mine", "D-a-n-c-i-n'", "Still Mine", and "Mixture Of Love". ✨✧ Stephanie MillsWhatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin'? ... LP
20th Century, 1979. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Soaring soul from Stephanie Mills – one of the lady's all-time hits, and for good reason too! The album really gives Stephanie's great voice a lot of focus – an upbeat, uptempo groove that sets her firmly on the dancefloor, but always with a touch of class – and a lot more depth than some of the easy come/easy go disco divas of her day! Thanks here is clearly due to the team of Reggie Lucas and Mtume – who strike strongly with the album as one of their key early productions – the sort of work that really helped push mainstream soul a bit further at the end of the 70s, and set some new tones for a lot of growth in the next decade. The keyboards on the record are almost as nice as the vocals – played by Hubert Eaves and Harry Whitaker with a nice degree of sensitivity – hardly the stronger keyboard voice of the early 80s soul scene, and often with a dose of jazziness that's really appreciated. Titles include "What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin'", "Deeper Inside Your Love", "Feel The Fire", "Put Your Body In It", "Starlight", and "Don't Stop Dancin". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Roscoe MitchellSolo Concert ... LP
Sackville (Canada), 1973/1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Incredible solo work from Roscoe Mitchell – almost even more compelling than any of his work with bigger groups! The set compiles material from a number of different concerts, and features Mitchell on alto, tenor, baritone, and soprano sax – blowing these wonderfully shaped, thoughtfully formed lines that are filled with soul and feeling – almost more inside than most of Roscoe's other work of the time, but still with some of the exploratory sensibilities you might hear in his Nessa albums. Sounds are quite fragile at points, but quite bold at others – and the range of expressions really keeps things interesting throughout. Titles include "Eeltwo", "Nonaah", "Tutankamen", "Ttum", "Jibbana", and "Oobina". 9 tracks in all – pulled from 1973 concerts in Kalamazoo and Montreal, and a 1974 set in Finland. ✨✧ Hank MobleyHank Mobley In Holland – To One So Sweet Stay That Way ... CD
Dutch Jazz Archive (Netherlands), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A lost smoker from the legendary tenorist Hank Mobley – recorded relatively late in his career, at a time when his music on Blue Note was really taking some great new directions! The approach here is maybe a bit more straightforward than those records, but still completely amazing – as Mobley's soloing with all these unusual twists and turns, and phrasing that you never would have heard a few years before – all while working with a variety of Dutch backing combos on these live performances from the Netherlands in 1968! One group features Pim Jacobs on piano, Wim Overgaauw on guitar, Ruud Jacobs on bass, and future avant legend Han Bennink on drums – and another features the great Rob Agerbeek on piano, with Hans Van Rossem on bass and Cees See on drums. There's also two studio performances with the larger Hobby Orkest ensemble – quite an unusual setting for Hank, and a great one too – and titles include "Summertime", "Twenty Four & More", "Three Way Split", "Vierd Blues", "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", "Sonny's Tune", "Autumn Leaves", and "Blues By Five".
