Bill EvansMomentum – Stadsschouwburg Groningen, The Netherlands 1972 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Limetree/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1972. New Copy 2LP ... $39.99 44.99 About May 31, 2024
A double-sized set of live Bill Evans material from the early 70s – a great amount of material that showcases a time when Evans had an especially fluid, open touch on the keys of the piano! The group here features the great trio with Eddie Gomez on bass and Marty Morell on drums – and unlike some other live Evans albums of this nature, which tend to mike the piano more than the rhythm, this one really has all three points of the trio coming out strongly together – especially Gomez' wonderfully rich, round tones on the bass. Titles include "Two Lonely People", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Re Person I Knew", "Elsa", "Emily", "Turn Out The Stars", and "Quiet Now". LP, Vinyl record album

Maria Rita (Maria Rita Stumpf)Brasileira ... LP
Selva (Brazil), 1988. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 29.99
Not the same Maria Rita that rose to international fame in the past decade or so – but an earlier, much more obscure singer with a nicely rootsy vibe – one whose presence in the Brazilian music scene is maybe more welcome to our ears than her famous later namesake! The album came out at the end of the 80s, but has a sound that feels more like the experimental generation of MPB in the 70s – some moments that have the brashness of Gal Costa around her India album, other moments of gentleness that recall the sensitive soul of Joyce, and maybe a few slight touches of the deeper drama of Maria Bethania – and yet, like all of those artists, this Maria Rita is very much her own person – as can easily be heard by the lack of pop production or commercial efforts on this very unique album. Titles include "Cantico Brasileiro No 1", "Cancao Da Gaora", "Lamento Africano/Rictus", "A Cidade", "Melodia De Veludo", and "Trilhas". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Art TatumJewels In The Treasure Box – The 1953 Chicago Blue Note Jazz Club Recordings (3LP set) (2024 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Resonance, 1953. New Copy 3LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful set of work from this legendary pianist – material that's issued here for the very first time, but which may well top some of the most important albums in Art Tatum's catalog! As with his classic 20th Century material, the setting here is a live one – the Blue Note club in Chicago, where Art is working with a trio that features Slam Stewart on bass and Everett Barksdale on guitar – a really cool group in that it features no drums at all, which is maybe no surprise, given the inherently rhythmic pulse that Art brings to the material! The whole thing is great – crisp, clear, and full of imagination – and the expanded package also features great notes that really benefit the recordings – a huge amount of tracks that include "Air Mail Special", "What Does It Take", "Crazy Rhythm", "Tea For Two", "The Man I Love", "Where Or When", "Night & Day", "Body & Soul", "Laura", "Humoresque", "Dark Eyes", "Judy", "Tabu", and "Lover". ✨✧ Dorothy AshbyIn A Minor Groove ... LP
New Jazz/Real Gone, 1958. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 23.99
A fantastic early album from jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby! Ashby's a unique talent like no other – and despite the fact that she plays a rather sleepy instrument, the harp, she swings with an other-worldly quality that's simply amazing, quite exotic, and very much in the camp of players like Yusef Lateef or Les Jazz Modes, who were trying similar experiments in jazz. This session features Dorothy in a quartet with the flute of Frank Wess, the bass of Herman Wright, and the drums of Roy Haynes, whose warm lyrical touches provide the perfect melodicism for the group. Titles include "Rascallity", "Bohemia After Dark", "Taboo", "Autumn In Rome", and "It's A Minor Thing". LP, Vinyl record album

BablaBabla's Disco Sensation ... LP
Survival Research, Early 1980s. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.99 About June 7, 2024
A definite disco sensation from Babla – a singer who refits older Indian film songs with new club grooves for the 80s – definitely very much in the mode that's promised by the title! The set features older songs by Shankhar Jakishan, Kalyanji Anadji, and Hemant Kumar – plus a few originals by Babla too – and the instrumentation also has a fair bit of keyboards in the mix, which creates this spacey disco vibe that's not unlike some of the more cosmic club tracks coming from the European scene at the start of the 80s! Rhythms are all upbeat, and the keyboards give the music a darker edge than you might expect – on titles that include "Aye mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal", "Intian Aartis", "Hamko Tumpe Pyar Aaya", "Kabhi Hota Nahin", and "Man Dole Mera Tan Dole". BardinoMemoria Da Pedra Mae ... LP
Jazzego (France), 2024. New Copy ... $31.99 36.99
A jazz trio, but one who bring something else to the mix as well – as they blend in lots of other elements with their core energy on drums, bass, and keyboards! The keyboards themselves range nicely – acoustic and electric piano, plus other electronics too – and there's a bit of alto and tenor on the set, guest guitar, and use of vocals in Portuguese that almost give the record the vibe of Brazilian music at points – while at other times, the music moves farther from jazz with more of a focus on the groove, then swings back nicely on the next track. Titles include "Black Mica", "Tilia", "Pedra Mae", "Punctum No 2", "Ressonancia", and "Giesta". LP, Vinyl record album

Ray BarrettoIndestructible (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Fania/Craft, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
By this point in his career, Ray Barretto certainly was Indestructible – one of the biggest Latin leaders of his day, working at the forefront of new trends and new sounds! This fact is wonderfully displayed by the front cover, which shows Ray unbuttoning his shirt and taking off his Clark Kent-styled glasses to reveal a Superman costume underneath – and apart from this easy gimmick, the album itself is a straight ahead Latin jammer, with no tricks, no silliness – just a perfect early 70s salsa sound! Arrangements are by Eddie Martinez, Louie Cruz, and Louie Ramirez – and titles include "Ay No", "La Orquesta", "El Hijo Do Obatala", "Indestructible", "La Familia", and "El Diablo". Black Renaissance (Harry Whitaker)Body Mind & Spirit (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Luv N' Haight, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
A spiritual jazz classic – one of the rarest albums of its type from the 70s! This legendary session was recorded by Roy Ayers' keyboardist Harry Whitaker – working here as the leader of the Black Renaissance group, a one-shot ensemble that featured Woody Shaw on trumpet, Azar Lawrence on saxes, Buster Williams on bass, and Mtume on percussion. The session was cut in New York in 1976, but only issued on a rare album that came out briefly in Japan. Yet somehow, the quality of the work and the depth of soulfulness have created a strong aura about the session – making it an oft-cited influence by a generation of DJs and soul jazz listeners. The album only features 2 long tracks – both of them strong ensemble numbers that build modally searching grooves in a Strata East-like style, peppered with voices, both sung and spoken, in a hip, socially conscious mode. Both tracks – "Black Renaissance" and "Magic Ritual" are excellent, on a par with the best 70s spiritual soul jazz! LP, Vinyl record album

David BowieSpace Oddity (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Parlophone, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 26.99
An amazing departure for David Bowie – hardly the kind of record you would expect from his oboe-filled tunes of a few years before – and really the start of the groundbreaking, earthshaking, reinventionist era of his genius! There's a spacious, soaring quality to Space Oddity that's every bit the kind of magical music you might hope for in a set recorded at the close of the 60s – a shift into new modes, new sounds that seem to suck up all the best influences in rock from the previous few years, but fuse it into a new cosmic vision for the next decade. And while others might stumble on cliche with the weight of such a task, Bowie pulls it off brilliantly – mixing his fuzzier feelings with some of his more personal leanings – and showcasing a newly deep sense of songwriting here that's really amazing. Some tunes have the sensitivity of work on Hunky Dory, while others burn with the fire of Man Who Sold The World – all in a balance that never sounds schizophrenic at all. Titles include"Space Oddity", "Memory Of A Free Festival", "God Knows I'm Good", "Cygnet Committee", and "Unwashed & Somewhat Slightly Dazed". LP, Vinyl record album

Brooklyn SoundsBrooklyn Sounds ... LP
Salsa/Vampi Soul (Spain), Early 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99 About May 17, 2024
Proof that hard Latin didn't always happen on the uptown scene – and a self-titled cooker from this legendary combo from Brooklyn! The record's a killer all the way through – done with some very deep, dark trombone that colors the session like the best of Johnny Colon's material from the late 60s – inflected with some brighter salsa moments in the rhythms, but all very focused and tightly held together by the rhythms! In addition to the trombone, the piano is especially nice – and other instrumentation includes a bit of organ and plenty of percussion. Most numbers have vocals – and titles include "Guaguanco De Puerto Rico", "Perdicion", "En Las Tumbas", "Rain", and "Sueltame Ya". LP, Vinyl record album

Brother Moves On$/He Who Feeds You Owns You ... LP
Native Rebel (UK), 2023. New Copy 2LP ... $25.99 38.99
A powerful and righteous album from Brother Moves On – as you might guess from the title – a group led by singer Siyabonga Mthembu, who's worked with Shabaka & The Ancestors – in a lineup that also features some contributions from Shabaka Hutchings as well! The group span their South African roots with some of the contemporary London vibe – mixing jazz elements with vocals and other production elements – in a lineup that also features work from Mthunzi Mvubu on alto and Muhammad Dawjee on tenor. Shabaka Hutchings adds in some flute and clarinet to the group's songs – and titles include "Bayakhala", "Sphila", "Puleng (ext version)", "Sweetie Love Oh", "Mazel", "Ta Tom", "Itumeleng Revisited", and "Hamba The Reprise". Brian Charette with George ColemanGroovin With Big G ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2018. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
Modern Hammond hero Brian Charette gets some great help here – tenor legend George Coleman, whose presence in the group makes an already-solid combo really sound great! Coleman was never a tenor player to work with an organ back in the 60s and 70s – but his work here is really wonderful, and turns that depth of soul that he can bring from the horn into a perfect match with Charette's great sense of phrasing and timing on the Hammond B3 – a pairing that might recall the match of either Booker Ervin or Sonny Stitt with organist Don Patterson back in the Prestige Records heyday. As with those sessions, there's also a great guitarist providing a whole new layer of color here – the mighty Vic Juris – and drums on the set are handled by George Coleman Jr. Titles include "Autumn Leaves", "Stella By Starlight", "On A Misty Night", "Body & Soul", and "Tenor Madness". CinephonicLes Paradis Artificiels ... LP
Marlow (Canada), 2020. New Copy ... $20.99 24.99
A nice little record that lives up to the name of the group – a record that's maybe jazz at the core, but served up in very cinematic ways – very much the spirit of the dark, moody image pictured on the cover! This isn't chase, crime, or cop music – but instead maybe the sounds you'd hear on the journey home after the battle – slow funk in the rhythms, peppered with great work on vibes, piano, and mellotron from Pierre Chretien – who also wrote, arranged, and produced the whole record too! Most tunes have a nice light melody over heavier drums and percussion on the bottom – never too over the top, but well-paced in a way that really makes this one stand out from the pack. Titles include "Les Corbeaux", "Eveil De La Cite", "Aube Sur La Ville", "Fleurs De Bitume", "Le Petit Cimetiere", "Apres Le Deluge", and "Illusions Perdues". LP, Vinyl record album

George ColemanAmsterdam After Dark (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Timeless/Tidal Waves, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 28.99
One of the greatest albums as a leader from tenorist George Coleman – an artist who we feel often never gave us enough with himself in the lead as well! George brings in that great edge he used on earlier sessions with other leaders, while still also really establishing himself as one of the most expressive tenorists of the 70s in a mainstream mode – almost that balance between straighter swing and sharper corners that Joe Henderson brought to key recordings at the time. The group here are very fluid, and able to shift wonderfully with George's lead – Hilton Ruiz on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – a masterful lineup who make magic throughout, on titles that include "Amsterdam After Dark", "New Arrival", "Lo-Joe", "Autumn In New York", "Apache Dance", and "Blondie's Waltz". A sweet electric 70s session from the mighty Joao Donato – very different than his earlier bossa work of the 60s – and with the same funky appeal as the best work on his classic Quem E Quem album! This set's got a tighter feel overall – very much in a samba soul style, with lots of great Brazilian bits mixed up with funk and jazz touches – including a range of great keyboards handled by Donato himself! Drums are by the mighty Wilson Das Neves – who brings in some breaks at a few points – and the whole thing's supremely soulful too – with titles that include the funky classic "Bananeira", plus "Patumbalacunde", "Lugar Comum", "Tudo Tem", and "Naturalmente". Kenny DorhamThis Is The Moment – Kenny Dorham Sings & Plays ... LP
Riverside/New Land, 1958. New Copy (reissue)... $40.99 44.99 On May 3, 2024
An unusual little session for Kenny Dorham – one in which he sings as well as plays trumpet – perhaps taking a page out of Chet Baker's book, but with a completely different approach! The group features Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, and Charlie Persip on drums – who is replaced by GT Hogan on a couple of numbers. The set's all standards, and Kenny's style is nicely raspy – not the best technically, but with some surprisingly gentle feeling that's a nice complement to his work on trumpet. Includes "Autumn Leaves", "Since I Fell For You", "From This Moment On", "This Is The Moment", "Angel Eyes", and "Golden Earrings". LP, Vinyl record album

A classic set to feature the Bill Evans Trio with the great Scott Lafaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums! Listening to the set we're reminded of what always brings us back to Evans' playing – a quality that's often described as moody, but which is really is quite spry and lively throughout this set, without ever giving up its lyrical approach. Titles are mostly standards – but really transformed by the touch of the trio – and tunes include "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "Autumn Leaves", "Witchcraft", "When I Fall In Love", "Peri's Scope", "What Is This Thing Called Love", "Spring Is Here", "Some Day My Prince Will Come", and "Blue In Green". Ryo FukuiScenery (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Nadja/Lawson (Japan), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $41.99 49.99 About June 5, 2024
Lyrical magic from pianist Ryo Fukui – a lost gem from the Japanese scene of the 70s, and a beautifully flowing album throughout! Fukui's got a wide-open touch to the piano that we totally love – and is easily one of the best of his contemporaries on the Japanese trio scene of the time – working in the open-ended mode that was allowed by labels in Tokyo during the 70s, a style that was never too far outside, but which really allowed the pianist to soar with a driving, rhythmic intensity. There's a bit of a modal groove to some of the tracks on the album, but more than that, there's just a beautiful sense of freedom – a love of sound and texture that's never reduced to mere experimentation, and which has Ryo taking full command of the keys to soar to the skies on waves of acoustic soul. The group on the set features Yoshinori Fukui on drums and Satoshi Denpo on bass – and tracks include "I Want To Talk About You", "Scenery", "Autumn Leaves", "Early Summer", and "It Could Happen To You". Joe LovanoI'm All For You – Ballad Songbook ... LP
Blue Note, 2004. New Copy 2LP ... $36.99 39.99
The album gives away its premise with the "ballad" in the title – but that's only part of the picture here, as the tenor of Joe Lovano is so wonderfully distinct, the album's got a richness that goes way beyond its cover! As with Coltrane's famous Ballads album of the early 60s, Joe here proves that at the core, past his other settings and experiments, he can still be a hell of a traditionalist on his horn – yet work with a sense of individuality that comes through right from the very first note! His partners in crime here are Hank Jones on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Paul Motian on drums – and titles include "Early Autumn", "Monk's Mood", "Like Someone In Love", "I'm All For You", "Don't Blame Me", "I Waited For You", and "Countdown". A stunning set of punk jazz, and one that maybe hearkens back to key experiments of this nature from the 80s scene – particularly some of the more groundbreaking work on the New York downtown scene! Ava Mendoza plays electric guitar and Devi Hoff play electric bass – but the pair also work here with excellent tenor from James Brandon Lewis, whose presence really balances out the fuzzier electric energy in a great way – different lines, different sounds, and a balance that never has Lewis trying to match the guitars for ferocity, which is a real plus. The quartet also features great drums from Ches Smith – and titles include "The Stumble", "Interwhining", "Dyscalculia", "Babel 17", "New Ghosts", and "Ten Forward". LP, Vinyl record album

Mojo MenThere Goes My Mind ... LP
Sundazed, Late 60s. New Copy ... $25.99 26.99
A long-overdue full length album from The Mojo Men – one that's comprised of rare singles and early demo cuts by the group – a killer act on the San Francisco scene who followed the same Beau Brummels path from Autumn Records to Warner Brothers! The music definitely echoes some of that legacy, but also has a vibe that's very much its own – psychedelic garage at times, and delivered in a way that's nicely lean, and unadorned by the kind of larger production that another label might have used to either muddle or ruin their sound. The lean brilliance is right up there with some heady Cali favorites that were issued by Warner and Reprise at the time – and had the label had the smarts, this record would have been another classic catalog release from those glory days! A record that crackles right from the very first note – the start of a tune titled "Forward Momentum" – which might well be a great way to describe the whole album as it moves through a range of different modes without ever looking back! Pianist Josh Nelson can leap into the fray at one minute, then step back and let a bandmate shape the sound strongly the next – which he often does when setting up the start of a tune, such that the whole album has a way of emphasizing the different strengths of the band – a lineup that also includes Walter Smith III on tenor, Larry Koonse on guitar, Luca Alemanno on bass, and Dan Schnelle on drums. Gaby Moreno provides guest vocals on the tunes "Tiburcio" and "Feed The Birds" – and other titles include "Lonely Are The Brave", "Forward Momentum", "Travel Town", and "Red Car Reminiscing". John OndoloHypnotic Guitar Of John Ondolo ... LP
Mississippi, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 20.98
The title here is certainly well-put, as the guitar of John Ondolo is every bit as hypnotic as any of the more adventurous musicians we've loved over the years – and that would include the work of artists like Sandy Bull or Peter Walker! As with both of them, Ondolo has a way of using unusual tunings and phrasing to make the music all his own – familiar at some level, in that he recorded these singles in Kenya, in modes that were still somewhat within the norms – but with a way of handling his instrument that's completely his own, and which makes these tunes completely mesmerizing throughout! Most numbers have vocals and some slight other added instrumentation, but it's always the guitar lines that seem to ring out the strongest – on titles that include "Siri Ya Vijana", "Olalekanga", "Kenya Twist", "Ukiwa Na Bwana Bibi", "Tumshukuru Mungu", "Tucheze Selele", "Kwela Wangu", and "Safari Ya Kilimanjaro". The front cover might look a bit dramatic, but the set's got a warm and wonderful feel – lean, soulful instrumentation from a Finnish trio that features Aleksi Heinola on drums, Temu Akerblom on bass, and Marku Holkko on reeds and flute – coming together with this gentle groove that's got a subtle glow all the way through! The music of Holkko is sometimes in a familiar mode, with sax or flute lines snaking through over the grooves – sometimes a bit more laidback and textural – and there's clearly some other instrumentation on the record that warms up the sound from time to time, including a bit of uncredited keyboards. William Penn Jazz EnsembleCarvings ... LP
Libreville (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 36.99
A completely beautiful record from a very local source – a small high school jazz group in York, PA – but one who come across here with some of the deeper elements of the spiritual scene in Philly at the time! The group's led by flute player Leslie Burrs, who solos on the record – and the combo also features wonderful work from younger players Timothy Warfield on tenor, Matthew Kaufhold on alto and soprano, Scott Stump on vibes, and Beth Kehler on piano – augmented at times by a few tring players, and some beautiful choral vocals too! This isn't the sort of high school band record clunkily making their way through pop covers – and instead, there's a richly spiritual vibe to the whole thing – much more Strata East than Schoolhouse Funk – on titles that include the Burrs originals "Carvings" and "Blessings & Glory To God" – plus great takes on "Naima", "Meditation", "Lazybird", and "Dolphin Dance". One of Lonnie Liston Smith's most spiritual sessions, and the record that most clearly shows his roots with Pharoah Sanders! The vibe here is much more jazz-based than on some of Lonnie's other records for Flying Dutchman – with Smith playing as much acoustic piano as he does electric, using the former in long-spiralling lines that have a beautifully meditative quality, and which give the album a real Strata East-like sound. Mtume and Sonny Morgan play percussion, Cecil McBee plays bass, and the real star of the album may well be George Barron – who turns in some beautiful Sonny Fortune-like work on tenor and soprano sax! True, the guitars are acoustic, and the vocals have a darkly eerie vibe – but the group is also heavy on read work from Jim Fraser, who arranged the set and plays a variety of saxes and flute – often with these edges and tones that are nicely unsettling! In addition to guitars, other instrumentation includes vibes, violin, and percussion – all used in really creative ways – on titles that include "Minerva", "Morpheus", "The Tale Of The Spider & The Fly", "Vesta", "Rolling & Tumbling", "Just As The Curtain Finally Falls", and "Aurora". Soulful reedman Tenderlonious plays flute this time around – but as always, it's the overall sound that makes the record so great – not just the solo bits on flute, but all the keyboards, basslines, and beats – stretched out in this cool 21st Century take on funky fusion! The music is jazz at the core, but more electrified too – with a straightforward funky groove on some numbers, and some more enigmatic modes on others – all a great blend of keyboards and flutes, which often share the same tonal range. Fat Possum, 1966. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A heck of a discovery – early recordings Townes Van Zandt cut in mid 60s Nashville – a couple of years before his official solo debut, and a soul shakingly beautiful mix of his country folk blues storytelling and some more rollicking numbers that work exceptionally well! One of the things that's most striking about it is how wise and knowing his songs and his voice are this early in his game, with the more intimate voice and guitar numbers sounding great. The few songs with busier instumentation work, too, and that's even more surprising give the Townes loner folk ouvre. We didn't think there could be much Townes left unreleased, especially of this quality! Great spiritual grooves from Web Web – a group who've always had a warm blend of electric and acoustic elements, but who take things further in this second collaboration with Max Herre – who brings in all sorts of keyboards and drum machine bits to the music! The core style is still jazz, with excellent tenor and flute from reedman Tonk Lakatos, whose presence really gives the album a soulful vibe – next to the core leading energy of Roberto Di Gioia, who works on a whole host of instruments – organ, mellotron, trumpet, guitar, piano, and even harp! There's other percussion in the group, warm basslines from Christian Von Kaphengst, and guest performances from a variety of others – including the great Carlos Nino on two tracks – all in a style that's got more of the warmth of Schema Records than the usual Compost sound. Roger Webb Sound with Barbara MooreVocal Patterns ... LP
De Wolfe (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
One of the coolest records ever from the legendary De Wolfe sound library in the UK – a set that's great not only for the work of Brit maestro Roger Webb, but also for the vocals delivered by Barbara Moore – a legendary session singer with a hell of a jazzy touch! Webb's charts are always full of life and color, and showcase his own roots in jazz – served up here with all sorts of fast-stepping rhythms that really let the vocals of Moore take off in wonderful ways – always without lyrics, as Barbara has this way of singing wordlessly that makes her voice act like another instrument next to the horns and keyboards in the arrangements. Wonderful throughout – with titles that include "Dreamy", "Play Girl", "Autumn Aria", "Up West", "Think Twice", "Flipper", "Sandy", "Gentle Soul", and "Sounds Easy". LP, Vinyl record album

Thein/BBE (UK), 1987. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $34.99
An overlooked gem from the German scene of the 80s – at a time when the prog and free jazz experiments of the previous decade had calmed down a bit, yet German musicians were still coming up with lots of new and amazing ideas! Here, there's definitely a bit of inspiration from Brazilian music, but mixed with some of the new generation of vocals from jazz singers like Karin Krog or Monica Zetterlund – handled by singer Beate Kynast on the record, in a way that's light years away from more traditional jazz vocals! There's a fluid, soaring sensibility to the music – modal mixed with post-bossa rhythms, on instrumentation that includes trumpet from Robert Schulte Hemming, alto and flute from Wolfgang Puschnig, keyboards and piano from Martin Kubert, drums from Peter Wirth, and bass from Rudi Engel. Instrumentation has a warm blend of acoustic and electric elements – very much like some of the best Nabel releases, or the sort of work later compiled in the Glucklich series – on titles that include "Rush Hour", "Impressions Of Autumn", "Bluze", "Number Four", Lament", and "Scarcely Had We Left The House". ✨✧ Ann Young & Yuji Ohno TrioAs Well Be Spring ... LP
Columbia/Lawson (Japan), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A lovely set of 70s jazz vocals – recorded by American singer Ann Young, with backing by a Japanese combo led by pianist Yuji Ohno! The sound is pretty darn soulful – tracks that range from modal groovers to mellow ballads, all sung by Ann with a really rich vocal approach, and backed up with lightly dancing notes that give the album a really classic feel. The whole thing reminds us a lot of some of the best Lorez Alexandria work from the 70s – with a similar talent for hitting strong notes, and working in some great bass next to the vocals. Titles include a jazz dancer version of "Speak Low", plus "Old Devil Moon", "Don't Explain", "I Only Have Eyes For You", "Autumn In New York", and "It Might As Well Be Spring". LP, Vinyl record album

Numero, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 32.98
A double-length collection of work from two obscure Atlanta soul labels – the Tragar and Note imprints, both run by local producer Jesse Jones! Back in the day, Atlanta wasn't nearly as big of an outlet for soul records as it's become in recent years – so Jones' labels were key in showcasing under-exposed local talent in the city, a range of soul groups, solo singers, and funk combos – all produced here with a really fresh sound! Nearly every track here is super-obscure – and there's few southern soul cliches to get in the way of the music – no overdone blues, no Hotlanta disco, no Muscle Shoals copies – just honest-to-goodness indie soul at its best – full of life, vitality, and personality – all presented with the usual deep-digging Numero look at the artists in the notes. The package is one of the biggest Numero collections so far – and really tells the tale of this crucially overlooked scene – a key link between more familiar southern styles and rising Northern modes, all with a personality of its own. Titles include "All Because of You" and "Down In The Country" by Tee Fletcher, "The Hump" and "Tipping Strings" by The Knights, "Somebody Got A Help Me" and "Love is So Mean" by Richard Cook, "Ain't That Sharp" by Young Divines, "Watch The Dog That Bring The Bone" by Sandy Gaye, "Messing Around" by Bobby Owens & The Diplomats, "Shake Daddy Shake" and "Try" by Eula Cooper, "Tumbling Down" by Langston & French, "You Got A Spell On Me" by Bill Wright, "Now That I'm Wise" by Nathan Wilkes, and "Nitecap" by L Daniels. Elemental, 1969. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer combo from saxophonist Cannonball Adderley – a group that features George Duke on both acoustic and electric piano, stretching things out, and helping the Adderley brothers find an even more soulful groove than they had in the 60s! The George Duke approach really makes for a cool concert throughout – with Cannon on alto (and a bit of soprano on one track too!), Nat on cornet, Walter Booker on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums – hitting that more complex, more righteous groove that Adderley was opening up on Fantasy Records in the final years of his life – a bit more spontaneous here, with lots of room for improvisation! Titles include a great version of Nat's "Hummin" – plus side-long takes on "Doctor Honoris Causa" and "Black Messiah" – and the tunes "Walk Tall/The Scene", "Soli Tomba", "Directions", and "Autumn Leaves". ✨✧ David BowieScary Monsters (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RCA/Parlophone, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
David Bowie back in costume at the end of the 70s – but informed enough from his Berlin trilogy that he's coming at things quite differently here! The album's a great summation of the sounds on Low, Heroes, and Lodger – taken almost back to some Ziggy Stardust and Space Oddity territory, but in ways that are a bit leaner, and more focused. Even more impressive, though, is the near-complete absence of other 1980 elements in the set – hardly any influences from punk or new wave, no post-disco dancefloor elements – just deeply unique Bowie all the way through, and proof that he could always find his own space in music when he wanted! Titles include "Up The Hill Backwards", "Teenage Wildlife", "Scream Like A Baby", "Because You're Young", "Scary Monsters", "Ashes to Ashes", "Fashion", and "Kingdom Come". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ryo FukuiScenery ... LP
We Release Jazz (Switzerland), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
International Anthem/Nonesuch, 2020. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious albums ever from Rob Mazurek – and a set that really continues the legacy of community building and world healing that's become such an important part of his music! Rob's a player who was great at the start – a hell of a trumpeter, and a great experimentalist with electronics – but in recent years, he's matured to become a real messenger for the farther, future reaches of jazz – with an energy that makes a collaborative project like this come off in a way that might never have occurred in the hands of any other musician! Mazurek is at the head – director, composer, arranger, and instrumentalist too – and the large lineup is filled with heavyweights from the Chicago scene that Rob helped shape over the past few decades – plus others as well – players who include Damon Locks on voice and electronics, Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Tomeka Reid on cello, Joel Ross on vibes, Jaimi Branch on trumpet, Jeff Parker on guitar, Ingebrigit Haker Flate on bass, and Chad Taylor, John Herndon, and Mikel Patrick Avery on a variety of drums and percussion. There's a richness here that tops other Exploding Star Orchestra performances – and more of a focus, too – so that the whole thing comes together as even more than the sum of its mighty parts, as one of the best International Anthem releases to date. Titles include "Galaxy 1000", "Parable Of Inclusion", "Autumn Pleiades", "Minerals Bionic Stereo", "Dimensional Stardust", "Abstract Dark Energy", and "The Careening Prism Within". ✨✧ Alain GoraguerMusique Classee X ... LP
Les Disques Du Culte (France), Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
That's a pretty racy cover – but the music inside is a lot more cool and classy – a set of sweet jazz funk numbers put together by the famous French maestro Alain Goraguer, with lots of nice electric touches! You may know Goraguer from his 60s work with singers – including France Gall and Serge Gainsbourg – or from his straighter soundtracks of that decade too – but here, he's going for a groovier, funkier style – one that fits the porno spirit of the cover, but with all the care and presentation of Alain's earlier work! In other words, these aren't just throwaway tracks churned out quickly for naughty movies – and instead, the songs are more like a 70s progression from the 60s soundtrack material by Goraguer. Titles include "Partenaires Particulieres Pour Parties Fines", "Kikumi Paravent Et Par Derriere", "Birgit Et La Male Du Pays", "Juliette Decoincee Dans L'Ascenseur", "Marie Jeanne Astique Le Pont", and "Post Scriptum Post Coitum". The record's definitely a nostalgia blitz, but one that has a very strong grounding in the 80s! Benjamin Herman plays saxophone throughout – but in a setting that's very new wave, post-punk, and no wave as well – lots of sharp reed lines colliding with frenetic work on bass, guitar, and keyboards – all with a vibe that makes you feel like you maybe stumbled onto some hip performance spot on the New York downtown scene in 1982! Yet despite the bombast and other instrumentation, Herman is actually pretty amazing on his solos – coming up with all these great sounds that really push the boundaries of the instrument – on titles that include "Chancelot", "One For Deelder", "Captain Zorg", "Zaat", "Hornin Out", and "Asman Graves". In case you think you stumbled upon the wrong record, these guys are the legendary Motorhead – and on this groundbreaking debut, they play straightforward rock and roll! This is pre-Ace Of Spades Motorhead – groundwork-paving, gnarly, primitive and incendiary Motorhead – too loud and fast for mainstream rockers, too menacing for fancy lads of all stripes – too gutteral and nasty even for most early metal fans – the world just didn't know what to make of Lemmy & Co – but they'd catch up, eventually! Titles include "Motorhead", "Vibrator", "Lost Johnny", "Iron Horse/Born To Lose", "White Line Fever", "Keepers On The Road", our second favorite version of "Train Kept A Rollin'" (sorry, Aerosmith), and "The Watcher". A heavenly bit of spiritual jazz from this cool Canadian combo – a lean group, but one who manage to deliver this soulful flow that almost makes you think they're a much larger ensemble! Pierre Chretien handles the Fender Rhodes and songwriting, and he's really got a magical ear for a tune – letting things build up, find their groove, then really take off – with work from a quintet that features Ed Lister on trumpet, Zakari Frantz on alto, Chris Pond on bass, and Mike Essoudry on drums – a group who seem to almost evoke some of those magical, soulful 70s sessions that were produced by CBC, and issued in very unassuming covers – the kind of collector's treasures we love to stumble upon when digging north of the border! Fantastic! We love Burt Bacharach in so many ways that it's easy to forget the genius of these early A&M sides – but going back to them is always a treat, and it's wonderful to hear the way that Burt lays down his own work when given the chance! You know the tracks – "House Is Not A Home", "Bond Street", "Reach Out For Me", "Are You There", "Windows Of The World" – but you may not know the arrangements, which are superb – quite different than the more famous vocal versions you've probably heard ad infinitum, and recorded at a level that brings a whole new magic and majesty to 60s pop! Matsuli (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most compelling albums we've heard from the African scene of the 70s – a rare set from a Soweto group, and one that's got a heavy dose of spiritual jazz in the mix! The album almost feels more like the kind of set you'd hear by a Paris group, extrapolating African sounds in the post-colonial era – or an American group, inspired by roots from the homeland – and the group sports some especially great work on tenor, played by Themba Koyana, a player we've never heard before! Rhythms are great, with lots of percussion, and some nice funky undercurrents at times – and other instrumentation includes organ, which often works well with the echoey production. The album does have some occasional vocals, but the main focus is instrumental, which is very jazzy too – and titles include "Itume Leng", "Anishilabi", "Lishonile", and "Emampondweni". Amazing Latin grooves from the Peruvian scene of the 60s – an a record that well lives up to its "descarga" title! Congolero Coco Lagos may hail from Lima, but he's got a sound that's right up there with the best of the New York scene of his generation – a hard-hitting and tightly rhythmic approach to his music, in a mode that's clearly inspired by the early 60s Cuban descarga sessions, but which also serves up the tunes in a tighter, even more firey style! Instrumentation includes plenty of percussion, piano, and vibes – all ringing out in a way that matches the best work on the Alegre or Tico labels from the early 60's. ✨✧ Miles Davis with Sonny StittLive In Paris – 1960 ... LP
Fremeaux & Associates/Return To Analog (Canada), 1960. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Rare work from a sometimes-overlooked chapter in the career of Miles Davis – a time when Sonny Stitt was briefly filling the tenor sax role that was more famously held by John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter! Stitt in any group is always a treat – and here, working with Miles, he turns in some of his most far-reaching solos of the period – very different than the shorter, more economical work of his studio albums – and even different than some of his longer-form material on Prestige to come! Stitt really rises to meet Miles in spirit – maybe in part because of the rest of the group features the famous rhythm trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – moving hard and with a great sense of modal energy, on titles that include "Four", "All Of You", "No Blues", "Two Bass Hit", "Walkin", "Autumn Leaves", "So What", "If I Were A Bell", and "Round Midnight". An incredible lost slice of work from one of our favorite singers of all time – a set of different live performances recorded in the Netherlands, most of which have some larger arrangements that give the whole thing the same sort of vibe as Blossom Dearie's famous London recordings of the 60s! The material here spans a time that stretches from 1968 to the end of the 80s – and Blossom is on piano throughout, and works with large backings from the Metropole Orchestra on about half the tracks – with arrangements from Arthur Greenslade and Rob Pronk, who really get the groovy spirit of the music right! Other tracks feature smaller group recordings, but still with that special charm that Blossom has in the London years – on titles that include "Discover Who I Am", "The Music Played", "You Have Lived In Autumn", "Who Knows Why", "Both Sides Now", "Bring All Your Love Again", "Bye Bye Country Boy", "Sammy", "Winchester In Apple Blossom Time", "Sweet Georgie Fame", and "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head". 60s Ahmad Jamal in the studio is already pretty darn great – but live, his group is even more amazing – as the pianist is able to stretch out more, and take a lot more chances too – not just in the way he's striking the keys of the piano, but also working with the fantastic rhythms of Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums! The trio have a legendary way of working together – sensing space as much as moments of music – and their work here on this series of unreleased tracks is completely sublime – and maybe one of the best recorded demonstrations of why Jamal was so revolutionary at the time! The mix of new ideas and soulful swing is incredible – and tracks here are mostly nice and long, filled with bold energy throughout – on versions of "Naked City", "Mr Lucky", "Where Is Love", "Dance To The Lady", "Fantastic Vehicle", "Gloria", "Misty", and "Autumn Leaves". Short instrumentals from drummer Harry James – produced in a way that often has a slight hip hop influence at times, but mostly in the way the other instruments are layered into the mix! Harry's drums are often live, and nicely crackling – and there's some great use of piano on the record – often acoustic, but produced with some cool effects that give it a nice wash of color, mixed with contributions from other guests like Keefe Jackson, Rob Frye, and Gerald Bailey. The tunes are short, nicely melodic, and with this crispy blend of drumbeats and sentiment. Titles include "Shaving Ahab", "Tumbleweed", "Mickey's Mantle", "Bucket Boy", "Dragon Juice", "Twenty Five Brookside", and "Crusher Of Babylon". LP, Vinyl record album
